Tell Me About Costco

I loved their habd dipped ice cream bars. So sad those went away. Some have gelato made fresh daily. We usually get pizza slices.

Interesting! I did not know that :) Do they ever have free one-day membership offers? I'd love to check it out to see if it's really worth the hassle of driving over the border.

I don't know about other places, but in Michigan you can buy alcohol without a membership. So if you want to look around, that's a way to get in without a card. You just can't buy anything except alcohol without it.

(ETA: Probably has to do with something in Michigan law and not Costco rules, now that I think about it.)

@vesperholly Costco offers 30-day trial memberships. I get coupons for them from time to time in our local Valpak mailings as well as in the newspaper. Nothing to lose by calling your closest one and asking.

What sort of insurance, Vash01?

One of my coworkers has auto insurance through Costco. The insurance company is Travelers insurance. They may have home owners insurance too, but I am not sure. Costco website may have the info but I will ask my coworker if she has that too. I got better rate on auto through Geico however.

I don't belong to Costco (though I would if one was closer), but I do belong to Sam's as I have three of those which are pretty close to me. I've found it's worth the price on things like replaceable razor blades and tooth brush heads for my Soniccare toothbrush alone.

I know Sam's has a travel section on their website, but I haven't used it yet. They also have auctions on line. Have never tried those either, but may try one if they have something I really want.

I think SAMs is as good as Costco. They both are close to my home, but I can afford membership in only one. Some people have both memberships.

Based on my in-laws' experience and the products they have from Costco and our own with Sam's, they are basically the same. My husband has been in Costco with his dad and said that if you went in and took out all the signage and blacked out the brand names on the Member's Choice and Kirkland products, he's pretty sure most people would not be able to tell the difference. He's had the hot dog/soda combo at both and not only is the price exactly the same, so are the hot dogs.

There are two differences for us: 1- the location of the nearest Costco is terrible to get in and out of and Sam's is near the pet store we have to regularly go to for rabbit food. 2-The membership at Sam's is actually cheaper.

(And his idiot sister has ordered the family that everyone must join Costco because she has deemed it worthy--we make a habit of not going along with those things as it feeds her notions that she runs everyone's lives--and already had a Sam's membership by then. Unfortunately her parents always listen in order to not upset her--and frankly, on her orders, they do all their grocery shopping, for only two people, in bulk at Costco and waste a ton of money since two people cannot eat that amount of produce and such. We are also concerned about their health as they resort to buying frozen foods there instead and both have heart and blood pressure issus already--I don't care how great any warehouse club claims to be, frozen entrees usually have way too much sodium).

Costco makes their own hot dogs. They used to sell Hebrew National. Sam's uses Nathan's hot dogs. They are totally different.

And by "makes their own", you mean purchases them from a manufacturer that sticks their name on them. Which is how all store brands actually work. There is little difference in hot dogs, really, unless you buy the super, super cheap ones.

And in these parts, no one considers it a hot dog unless it is bright red anyway (don't ask, I don't know): http://scene7.samsclub.com/is/image/samsclub/0007509406450_A?$img_size_380x380$

(and that image being from Sam's was totally unintentional, btw, didn't even notice at first).

That is like saying ball park beef hot dogs are the same as their angus beef hot dog. Or hebrew national is the same as nathans. Or generic tissue is the same as puffs. Not all generics are equal. I grew upon generics and even poor there is a difference from mayo with an off label vs best foods for my mom to skip buying it at all if there wasnt money. :)

At the end of the day, all of them that I have checked except Hebrew National contain nitrites which are now documented to contribute to the development of digestive cancers particularly of the esophagus and the stomach. Because there is reason to believe that those cancers may also run in families and I have had one relative die of each, I haven't eaten a damn hot dog for a long time anyway and would recommend that no one else eat them either, especially people prone to reflux (heartburn). But esophageal cancer (in spite of its despairingly dismal five year survival rates) is not breast cancer so no one cares or fears developing it.

And, this is a Costco thread, and if I've learned one thing from my parents-in-law and their daughter, it is that everything at Costco will contribute to your long term health and well being forever and ever amen.

Yeah, but that's moot if Vesperholly is crossing the border to shop at a Canadian Costco: no alcohol in the Canadian locations. (except perhaps Quebec, they do things differently over there ...)
