Now that I'm listening, this guy is so whack. It's all the more impressive they can answer because his questions make no sense! He wants to know if winning silver at the Olympics was disappointing and they have to explain how it was a team event and they want an individual medal. Then he says the next Olympics are in Italy, they correct him, and he goes "since you don't know whether they next Olympics are in China or Italy, what city would you like to go to?"

Also his sort of garbled question to Vladimir about how he had heard that since CSKA and Spartak were bad at soccer Vladimir didn't like soccer but he was into hockey and then he added something else which I barely understood myself and poor Vladimir was like... are you asking me about hockey?

I studied Russian at a local community college, with a native Russian teacher who was from Siberia. I took two courses (did homeworks, took exams, did speaking). The college refused to offer the next level course, even though many of us signed a petition And the professor was willing to teach it.

Around the same time I also attended parties at the Russian center here, and after the college courses ended, I took group lessons from a teacher who was from St. Petersburg (mostly 3-4 students including me, so we got a lot of individual attention). The organizer was from Moscow and she Helped us too. Having native Russians teaching really helped my Russian pronunciation but I really struggle with grammar - mainly the Six Cases. I never mastered them.

The parties went on for about 18 months. So I had a lot of exposure to the language and culture until the center closed two years ago. I have been out of touch since, except for the Russian songs Which I love and listen to frequently.

I was never good at conversing in Russian. I need the dictionary, which doesn’t work well if I am talking to someone. I am more comfortable reading and writing.

There is a Russian meetup group here that practices speaking but I don’t attend it because of the pandemic. I am very surprised that they are meeting in person. So I try to brush up my Russian on my own, when I can, but I do much better in a classroom Setting. Some day I may join the meetup group but they have already advanced, so I may not feel comfortable There.

I listened to the interview. It was a little surreal to listen to them give an English language interview, but they both did a great job. Evgenia has improved so much.

I agree the guy doing the interview seems to know very little about skating, thus the crazy questions.

Thanks so much! It is asking me to install three different things. Even a different browser Opera which I never heard of. It thinks I am on a Mac though I am on iPad. Driving me crazy. Flash player may be safe, but I am always reluctant to open these links. I got virus on my computer in the past. I may get on my PC (laptop) and see if I can open it.

It sounds like you need an ad blocker, cause I didn't get ads on either the media fire or instagram pages. I downloaded from your link but it was asking me to download a lot of other stuff that I was not familiar with. However, I was able to listen to the interview on Instagram, using my PC (laptop). Not sure why it didn't work on the ipad. It was really cute. I listened to it twice.

They must have learned to speak English while living in Florida, so they were not so nervous about doing an interview in English, it seems. Sometimes they couldn't remember the word, but with a little prompting they could answer the question.

The interviewer asked Vladimir if he was Irish because of his red hair, it seems. It was all in jest. Vladimir played it well. He has not been to Dublin- because there is no skating? I didn't get that part.

Some funny questions and they didn't know how to answer some. Famous person- after a Lot of thinking by both- Elon musk. Evgenia takes inspiration from Totmianina because she 'broke her head' - very funny. I guess she was too young when Elena Berezhnaya had that accident. Zhenya wants to visit London, and for a warm weather place, Bali and Brazil. Vladimir loves hockey, it seems. He likes NHL team that has Russian players, of course. So the interviewer suggested Washington (because Ovechkin plays for them). For a song he likes, Vladimir picked River Dance. I hope they don't choose it for their competition program.

I wish we could see them on video for this interview. There was a lot of laughter and it seemed like they were happy and having fun.

Evgenia takes inspiration from Totmianina because she 'broke her head' - very funny. I guess she was too young when Elena Berezhnaya had that accident.

I was curious, so I looked up the dates. Elena’s accident was in January 1996. Evgenia would have just turned 1 in December 1995. A little young to have remembered that.

In 2002 Zhenya would have been a six year old, who just started skating. Amazing how years pass.
Totmianina's accident was in October 2004 at Skate America, IIRC, and she and marinin won the OGm in 2006, that is when Zhenya was around 9 or 10. It makes sense that it inspired her.
