:( What could have been, with more luck. At least, Stolbova has a Olympic silver medal with Fedor Klimov. And fans still have these memories:

She has a gold medal too.

Team gold ain't nuthin' to sneeze at. :D

But if you are a champion diva, like Stolbova (and indeed like Savchenko), you always want more, i.e., individual gold. There's no looking back either for athletes who are always striving and always wanting to be on the battle field. In that sense, this Stolbova retirement news is sad -- even more so since we all know she had hoped to continue, and had tried mightily to make it happen.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane!
(BTW, they had a clean performance of that Besame Mucho SP at 2017 NHK Trophy, as well as a solid performance of their Carmen free skate).
Thanks for thinking of me and finding all these videos.

Ksenia’s Instagram post about the retirement (in Russian): https://www.instagram.com/p/B8eRUIMp3VF/

I can’t say I’m totally surprised by this announcement, but it’s still bittersweet and drags up a lot of memories for me.

Ironically, she announced her retirement on the 6-year anniversary of her Olympic silver medal. That was the day I first saw Stolbova/Klimov (on TV) and fell in love with them as a pair. They’re the couple that got me invested in pair skating (and to this day, Pairs is still my favorite discipline because of them).

They had some truly awful luck, but in the end, I think they can be very proud of all they accomplished. They came into the 2014 Olympics as underdogs and walked away with two medals. They won a world silver medal. They won a GPF title by almost 13 points over the reigning world champions. They picked up three national titles and several medals at Europeans along the way, and they did all of this while battling nasty injuries and a very deep pairs’ field. Not to mention, the IOC’s rather cryptic decision didn’t help anything.

Even though Ksenia didn’t have a fairytale ending to her career like Savchenko, it sounds like she’s going out on a high note. I think she just wanted to know she had done all she was capable of before she left the sport, and she did. It’s unfortunate that there wasn’t a male pair skater at her level who could help her achieve even more, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Now that she’s retiring, she won’t have to worry about so many serious injuries and the stress of competition. No matter what she chooses to do in the future, I support her and I hope she finds happiness.

For those of you wondering what she might be planning in the future, she recently performed in two of Evgeni Plushenko’s shows:

(Also, I want to thank all the nice people on here who have been sending me messages today, asking if I’m okay. I’m fine, but I really appreciate the support).

I saw Stolbova/Klimov at Skate America in 2013, and they were by far the most thrilling and spot-on pair of the event. I don't think I'd considered them real contenders until that time, but seeing them live made me know how good they were and how ready they were to be in the top echelon of the sport. I cheered for the team as a result, but I don't think they nailed many future competitions the way they did that one.

The Free skate at the GPF 2015 was definitly her Highlight! The 3T+3T+2T is still the pair element with the highest final point value ever...

It was absolutely incredible! I may be biased, but I would say it should be among the top 5 pairs' free skates of the past 20 years. It was such a unique program; at first, I wasn't sure if it was going to work, but they really delivered it in such a captivating way. Also, her reaction at the end is so cute.
They nearly broke the world record for the free skate total!

She had such beautiful skating skills and it factor live, IMO. I’ll miss her.

I saw her live at 2015 Skate America and I was blown away. They had some mistakes in the short program, so they were skating in the first group of the free skate. The gap in quality between them and the rest of the pairs in that group was so incredible. They actually didn't win a medal there, but their performance was my favorite of the night for sure.
I think their real strength was how well they moved together as a pair. They were both such powerful skaters, but when they skated together, it was just magical. The sheer quality of their skating skills, the running edges of the throw jumps, and the magnetic chemistry between them was just amazing.
I'm definitely going to be putting some montage videos in this thread soon so we can reminisce.

They had such star power even back then! I think they really broke through that year. They always had good skating skills, side-by-side elements, and throw jumps, but they were held back because they only had a double twist and their lifts were still pretty slow. Once the Mozer group fixed that, they were the full package.
They weren't the kind of pair that showed up to every competition and threw down two clean performances, but when they could nail it, they were just divine. And they nailed it at two major events that counted - the 2014 Olympics and the 2015 GPF. It's just a shame they had such bad luck.
