I am looking to speak with any current or former parents of international skaters (any country).

I am researching skating culture and would love to hear things from the parents perspective especially for parents who had skaters travelling internationally. I believe most federations do not pay for a parent to travel with minors and I'd like to hear how parents feel about that? Is the supervision at events sufficient? Have any wild or unfortunate stories that happened? I'd love to hear it.

This coupled with your previous question about inappropriate commentary seems kind of intrusive? What are you doing with this information and the anecdotes you are gathering? If it's journalism most journalists identify themselves upfront rather than asking for personal info in DMs.

It's a weirdly salacious sounding approach for an academic. Most students and academics also identify their project before asking for participation, and participation has to adhere to certain ethical guidelines- it's kind of an institutional requirement that all schools have. The "spill, gurl" phrasing doesn't help instill confidence either.

Agreed.

People said on the previous thread that if you don't like it, don't participate. But if it were academic research, I'd assume they would figure out where rinks are in their town, approach them, talk to parents there, introduce themselves. Or if there are no rinks in town, then find one online, and email the admins, ask to chat with willing parents.

Or find skating parents' emails and social media, email them there. Or skaters who perhaps no longer skate who'd be willing to put them in touch with their parents.

Or if this is supposed to be a social media excursion, then the least I'd expect them to do is message the mods, and perhaps even reveal their identity (including institution) to the mods in question (if this has already been done, all good, but there's been no indication).

Project and institution, and you're right, a research project like this should have human research ethics clearance and a project number from the university's HRE Committee which can be checked for validit, and protocols to follow.

I can see that you were on the board and looking at member profiles minutes ago, care to share with the class what your project is?

While I can see not wanting to post this information on a public forum, it would be wise for anyone who is interested in answering this thread or talking to the OP to have all of this information before agreeing to talk, as well as a formal disclosure of how anything that is said will be used in this research.

I can see how a forum like this could be a useful resource, but I have to say that the methodology here seems a little suspect. There are a lot of academics on this board; I think at least most of us would approach this a little differently.
