I can't quite get used to it after all those JGPs with five thousand skaters in each event.

I can! Following the JGP is a 7-week marathon with the size of some of those fields. I'd not mind if the GP fields were a little bigger - maybe 3 warm-up groups instead of 2 for each discipline, but it's better for TV contracts to have these smaller field sizes.
