Shibutanis thread 3: Evolution

I never heard of her before, I just watched this program https://youtu.be/09vyWLdey_4?t=20 and I think this team would fit very well in this age :p

And she really is 54yo? she looks so young.

Renee's previous partner was Donnie Adair (a descendant of figure skating pioneer, Jackson Haines). I believe Adair retired due to injury, which led to Renee eventually partnering with Gorsha Sur.

Roca/Adair - 1986 U.S. Nationals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLxyCxOU-Aw
BTW, 54 is youthful, especially with staying active and fit

yes, but the first time I see her photo, I thought that she was another active ice dancer of Canton

Renee got it going on, and she always did! She the diva of ice dance forevah! :glamor: Did you check out that boffo inverted lift with Gorsha Sur and how long it was held and the amazing flexibility? It's fun to look at the way they ice-danced years ago when the rules were a bit more malleable, or at least very different. ;)

Thanks to whomever uploaded the compilation! Do we know the Shibs programs now?

We know only the music, SD to Perez Prado (we don´t know exactly what song or songs from him), FD Paradise of Cold Play (I guess with some other song or songs) .

Ice dancers Maia, Alex Shibutani to mentor South Korean students

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/c...utani-mentor-south-korean-students/584206001/

And you get this cool opportunity: Maia and Alex Shibutani, ice dancers who train in Canton, will use video conferencing to mentor students from Jinbu Middle School in PyeongChang, South Korea, leading up to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Starting in September, the Shibutanis will host a series of monthly mentorship sessions with the students via video chat. In February, the ice dancing pair is expected to meet the class when they travel to South Korea for the Winter Games, the United States Olympic Committee will announce today.

it tells you how much respect the Shibutanis have earned in the eyes of the USOC. They are three-time world championship medalists (2011 bronze, 2016 silver, 2017 bronze) and took ninth place at the 2014 Olympic Games.

Great opportunity for the Shibs. Also, nice to have this verified:

"“We have taken our creative process to another place entirely, the types of professionals we work with on our music, on our choreography,” Alex said. “And we have upped our game in the gym.”"

I did notice that four-five years ago, Alex was really buff but I think that sort of affected his balance and ease-of-movement, so maybe they figured out as a team the best work-out plan for Alex and Maia. Maia seems to be in the best physical condition she's ever been in now.

I hope that off ice work will help them with lifts, I am wishing they incorporate again this one https://youtu.be/aaWD5UidL0s?t=197, It's a shame they had to change it.

I think that for the Shibs, this season, their material needs to be authentic to their style but it cannot look like a plain skating routine. Their break out quality is rooted in originality although it does have a tame feel to it. I hope that they were able to add a flair to their material that allows them to skate out their skin, not that they will but, one can hope.I quite like them being the #1 USA team but I think that Madison and Zack are their stiffest competition if they get their nerves under control.

Can you believe how exciting and anticipating dance is in our own country? I'm 36 and i remember when our talent pool was shallow. If only our pairs could look like pairs and not two skaters skating next to one another...that's a different story though

Not to jinx them or anything but I think despite being the only American team to come close score wise to the top two this past season and coming out in top out of all the Americans at Worlds, Nationals, and the GPF, they got the message loud and clear and I have a very positive feeling about them going into this season. I know everyone thinks H/D have the most potential and talent out of the American teams and are all rooting for them the most, but I think the Shibs have the most untapped potential and are possibly coming close to realizing it or at least scratching the surface.

Has anyone listened to Lynn Rutherford's Ice Network podcast from Champs Camp? It looks like Ryanimay Conferido has worked with the Shibs on their SD music. Lynn said that H/D and C/B are going for a traditional sultry rhumba, with C/B going towards a more tribal theme. According to her, the Shibs are going to a different direction, which I think is expected considering that they are a brother/sister team and a latin dance done by them has to be done differently. With Ryanimay doing the music, maybe there will be a tweak on Perez Prado.

ETA: I know threads don't die at 1000 posts anymore, but should we make a new a number 4?

Yes, I heard it too. I really did not like the idea of them modifying the music of Pérez Prado, but taking away the possibility of doing a romantic or sensual program (and let's face it, H/D, C/B and V/M really have an advantage by using these themes), their only chance to stand out among the top teams is to do something original.

I wonder what direction they will take their program in. I love most Latin dances but when they're not done well, they can be very awkward to watch.
