Savchenko/Massot Fan Thread

Aljona is a skating genius. To think how she plucked Bruno out of obscurity, forced him to learn German at gunpoint (surely that happened after the first two fails) and assembled a team of coaches and choreographers who could make them not just excellent but breathtaking in less than three years... it's like a Hollywood fantasy.

One of the happiest, most memorable nights of my skating fan life.

Congratulations, Aljona and Bruno, your coaches and choreographers, your partners and families, Germany, and all your fans across the globe!

Someone should make a movie about her or at least write a book.

I am so happy for them. I was crying with ecstasy at their performance, and then when Aliona won which I was 90% sure they had when the Chinese slipped behind them, and all but confirmed when the Russians doubled their first jump, I have not been so happy with a result or moment in skating for a long time. Nobody deserves an Olympic Gold medal more than Aliona and I am so happy she finally has it.

I hope this is not it for this pair, they still have so much more to give, but I understand with Aliona's age if she doesnt go much longer now that she has met their ultimate goal.

And what a performance! So glad they stopped focusing on the throw triple axel as they showed this year they can be magical and win without it.

S/H are my absolute favorites, but after S/M finished that utterly stunning LP I wanted that gold for them so much. One of the most breathtakingly beautiful programs in figure skating I’ve ever seen. They deserved the gold. What a dream podium. :encore:

I would be grateful to anyone who could find a video showing what happened backstage once they won and during the flower ceremony. I would love to see the moments with their other halves and the ceremony were he supposedly lifted her on top of the podium?

Apparently the camera man did a good job today!

You can find that here, it's the first clip.

4 years ago, we all thought she was a tad crazy because let's be clear, Bruno was not seen as a very good skater. A good tall partner, a little rustic for Aljona.
What she has been able to bring in him is amazing. And it has made her more an artist IMO. Because I always felt they were trying too hard with Robin, with Bruno, it all seemed to come from the heart.
And that free program of theirs was just their best. Absolutly amazing from start to finish.
I'd have been so mad if they'd lost this for a 2 salchow from nerves.

They both were so emotionnal, Aljona made me cry because she has waited for this to happen for 5 olys, and Bruno too for the whole fairytale story.

And a final note to my dear FFSG: when you do believe in someone, you act like the german fed did from the get go. You don't make false promises or threats. You stand behind your skaters and you help them.
Congrats to whoever at the german fed acted like that, because that was also really refreshing to witness (considering I'm french and tired of the FFSG antics actually).

I didn't think she was crazy! I think at the time I wrote that she knew him from training and probably had a pretty good understanding that this would work and that he was capable of more.

I'm so happy Aljona was right and so thrilled for them. The skating does seem to come from the heart - maybe because it's such a positive partnership and training situation - and it's a big part of what makes them special.

I cried. Pairs has always been my least favourite discipline, but never have I been so emotionally invested in a performance and an outcome. I'm just so thrilled for Aljona.

If she's serious about gold, it probably will take a quad twist plus the throw triple axel and throw quad salchow.
[....]
Strategically, I've never felt like she has gotten the Olympic season right.

I've never been happier to eat my words!

Wow, just wow! That program was a clinic in level 4 elements with +3 Grade of Execution. You can see her core strength on every pair element.

34 years old! Must be the oldest skating Olympic gold medallist in..... forever*? She picked a virtually unknown partner with citizenship issues.... This seemed like a complete folly. And now, Olympic gold. Wow. One of the greatest stories in skating. I think Aljona will be mentioned in the same breath as Irina Rodnina and Katia Gordeeva as the greatest female pairs skaters in history.

*Seems like she is the oldest female gold medallist, and the fifth oldest medallist of any type behind Jayne Torvill, Hongbo Zhao, Oleg Protopopov, and Christopher Dean.

Did anyone find the medal ceremony ? Not the one with the tiger toy thing.
