I was on this site when US invaded Iraq and no one was boycotting US skating.
So if you were on this site then why didn’t you lead the charge if you think that a ban was warranted in 2003?

In case you don’t recall, not only the U.S., but a large number of other countries including the UK, Spain, Australia, Poland, Japan, South Korea, Georgia and Ukraine, and 30-40 other countries were part of the coalition that deployed forces to Iraq and supported the effort. I don’t think any of these countries intended to annex Iraq into their own country by force. As I recall the aim was to remove Saddam Hussein, a very evil dictator, and his army from power and most of the free world, right or wrong was in support. I was not.

Yeah. But did Ukraine fly two planes into two monumental skyscrapers in Russia killing thousands? Don't even mention the fake news about the denatzification of Ukraine because there was Crimea first right?

It's like comparing apples and oranges.
Iraq didn’t either. The 9-11 terrorist were Al Queda backed and came mostly from Saudi Arabia with a few from elsewhere—UAE, Lebanon, and Egypt. Hussein was a horrible dictator, but in the end, the intelligence community was never able to show there was any involvement between Iraq and Al Queda on 9-11 or anything eise. The Bush admin tried to link it to give a reason to invade, but it was false. We had zero reason to invade, but we did it anyway.

And US propaganda and fabricated evidence has you believing that Iraq had flown those planes...

So you think that invading other countries and removing their leaders by force is okay as long as it's a committee decision? And that performing a locus act on a country (I fly in, I shit, I leave) is preferable to annexation?

It is a very silly thing to say that the aim was to remove Saddam.

There are very evil dictators in that very part of the world that find the warmest welcome in Washington so please don't try to sell the fairytale that the Iraq war was some sort of anti-dictator crusade. No one in the so-called free world has a problem with dictators per se.

And while we are on the subject of annexation, well I know a country or two that practices it with abandon and its skaters and gymnasts are still welcome on international stages as far as I can tell.

I did say, "If watching Russian skaters means more to you than saying no to Neo-Stalinism, then by all means watch," and apparently, watching Russian skaters does mean more to someone in this thread. C'est la vie.
And yet the world claps for Zahra Lari, who represents an absolute monarchy that is currently bombing and starving children in Yemen but whatever, I guess. The wrong kids to care about, the wrong skater to pick on.

I’m still seeing a lot of the Russian skaters in instagram. I thought they’d be gone by now. Are they able to keep instagram?

I stated the facts as to what the coalition of governments that invaded Iraq was saying as the reason. And in fact Saddam was removed and his army defeated. Did I support the war and believe that was the proper response to 9/11? No, as I stated in my post.

I still don’t understand what your arguments have to do with whether the world should currently condemn Russia for its unilateral unprovoked attack on Ukraine and whether it should do everything in its power to stop it. We can’t go back to 2003. In fact the administration that made the decision to go to war has long been out of power. And I never voted for them. How far should we go back in history? To Nazi Germany or the attack by Japan on the U.S. at Pearl Harbor? In any event, you are free to not watch the skaters from the 40+ countries that were involved in Iraq.

May be it was not zero reason. Their oil could have been the reason. The Bush admin used WMD as an excuse to invade.

The point is that the Russia thing isn’t virtue signalling.

The invasion of Ukraine is basically a tinder box and there’s a potential risk it could be the spark for a wider European war, world war or even nuclear war. The sanctions are about the world trying to slow down the economics and propaganda of the Russian war machine without resorting to armed conflict. This is because this war has the potential to spill over into something very dangerous for a lot of countries and it is within their power to effect sanctions.

The Russian skating situation is interesting to me as I am curious to see how the sport will continue with just Russian Cup domestic events and Russian Nationals for the foreseeable future. Unless something significant changes I don’t expect Russia will be at the next Olympics.

I think certainly for a period, lots of the skaters will be happy with the domestic events … certainly the juniors will be.

Perhaps sports will continue well in a domestic bubble for some time. The state of international competition might not impact the perception of skating particularly if access to news and videos is restricted due to social network bans.
