Actually, there has been some chatter about Russia and China joining together for an Olympic type competition. So, who knows? Given the cost of hosting an Olympics and the difficulty in finding hosts, they could probably pull it off.

China didn’t host two Olys because TPTB don’t care about Oly prestige. They might have pulled back from skating but they invest a lot in other sports. I can’t imagine they’d compromise their internal image of succeeding in matching or bettering the West just to play footsie with pariah Russia.

Apparently, they've considered it.

My assumption is that this move is just for current propaganda purposes and won't actually pass into law. Or if it did, they'd just repeal it after the competitive ban is lifted. I think?
I think the probability of it being passed into law is high. It is a very strange - almost isolating - move for a country that prides itself on being "the best in the world" in many sports.

Not sure what they would gain by repealing it when the ban is lifted because whatever CAS decisions are handed down between now and then will still apply to any of their athletes who are sanctioned.

My favourite part of that article was the "mythical" state sponsored doping. Apparently no Russians were caught cheating at the 2014 Games - according to them 😄.

But if the Russian sports federation doesn’t recognize the authority of international sports governing bodies, how can it eventually return to international competition?? (That’s why my thought was they’d repeal it later on, if they pass it in the first place.)

Who knows. If they will no longer accept any CAS decisions re sanctions of their athletes, repealing a law will not make any difference to those that have been sanctioned. It seems they have no interest in returning to international competition if they have to abide by the same rules as every other country does.

there were rumors on some of the Russian sports pages. Nothing substantial, but rumors. Whether they are serious or not, remains to be seen.
OTOH, the person on the China thread who seems to keep up with Chinese sports rumours doesn't agree with this, so... Very much seems one-sided.

I don’t see a clear and obvious involvement from Russian in Chinese Olympic sports teams except for the Chinese RG team which indeed hire a Russian coach at this moment.
It is propaganda rather than a concrete action plan for me.

3rd Event: Top 4 ladies FS all very good. Ksenia Guschina, Ksenia Sinitsina, Victoria Yametova and Valieva. Yametova has personality to spare and in a normal year would have been on the JGP. Kamila landed her quad in the warmup (several times), but fell in the comp. It seems to be a confidence issue. The rest of her program was fine. And, several of the girls and coaches are eating the ice cream.

And, I put the accent on the wrong syllable on Russian names when I say them in my head.

Pairs finished exactly as expected with only three entires, but Tar/Mor skated very well, so the win was deserved. So did Kadarova/Kolosov. They are thriving under Moskvina's team. All three teams were very happy with their skates.

Men Top 4
Danielian: better FS than his SP, but he's still making silly mistakes and he let's them get in his head. He's so expressive. I hope he can finally go perfectly clean because he has the ability to be on the podium if he does.

Ivan Popov of the seriously wild hair: Good start, but let the program get away from him toward the end, but this kid has potential and deserved his podium placement. Good for him.

Aliev: :swoon: When he's on, he's on. Holy crap. Mozalev has a big lead from the SP, but this was one of the best skates I've seen him do. This rivals his Euro winning skate.

ETA: Mozalev let the pressure get to him with a couple of silly minor mistakes. Will his SP lead be enough to hold on to first place? You decide.

Will there be sort of a fake Russian Grand Prix final at the same time as the real one?

No, it's in February. They're using this for entry into nationals since the usual route is for senior skaters with a GP assignment, juniors who medal at the JGPF, and winners on the Russian cup series. Some junior skaters (age wise) are skating the senior events and some the junior events so I guess the highest ranked juniors will still be invited to senior nationals. I think that's the case in any event based on the web page, but I could be wrong.

But there's still a chance they might compete in Perm in stage 6, said no one who isn't writing for state media. It was clear they wouldn't compete in Moscow when Angelopol and partner, whose name I can never remember (Vasilisa, yes, it's her last name I can never get right), were moved to compete this weekend.
