NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nanci Griffith, the Grammy-winning folk singer-songwriter from Texas whose literary songs like “Love at the Five and Dime” celebrated the South, has died. She was 68.

“From A Distance” was the one secular song the nuns allowed us to sing at school in the 1980s.

As much as I love the Divine Miss M, she doesn't touch Nanci's version - that voice both innocent and full of life experience at the same time. RIP.

I really enjoyed Griffith's music. What a great songwriter and a performer so deserving of way more attention than she ever received.

RIP Nanci Griffith. Thanks for the magic.

Love at the Five and Dime from Austin City Limits:

Goin' Gone with Mark O'Connor:

Kathy Mattea covered both these songs, taking the first to #3 on the country charts and the latter all the way to #1. Mattea also covered "Listen To The Radio" which is another great song. Nancy Griffith's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q453p66kKc

Suzy Bogguss covered "Outbound Plane", which was a top ten country hit.
