There was somebody on my city's FB page planning a get together to celebrate her birthday, some kind of national celebration. They are still going to do it.

I loved her characterizations -

She was a groundbreaker in Radio in the 40s and had a show in the 50s. When asked by the producers to shorten the time given to a black performer, she told them to 'stuff it'.

She was the man-hungry Sue Ann Niven in The Mary Tyler Show, played an Alpha character in Mama's Family which also featured Rue McLanahan, then they both refused to be typecast and took different roles in The Golden Girls.

My sister texted me the news so I knew it was true. Somehow I hadn’t thought her not reaching her 100th was a possibility — as someone posted above she almost seemed “immortal.” She truly was a special human being — talented and generous. Rest In Peace, Betty White. You will be missed but long remembered.
