It's been 24 years since the day I call my generation's Dec 7th (Day of Infamy). I grew up knowing Dec 7th meant something to my parents generation, it was just words in a history lesson to me. For now i think everyone over the age of 5 in the US remembers 9/11.
Or at least the ones who had parents and teachers or other adults watching the non stop video being played 24/7 for weeks. We now how an entire generation that has little to no experience of the day other than history lessons - with the except for those whose families were directly impacted by loss. We have the beginnings of a second generation for whom the event will be something learned in US history classes.
The horror was felt across the world was bizarre. The US felt it the most, largely in part that US has rarely had that level of violence from outside forces on our land. For NYC there was no escape, the smoke, the ash both building and human fell on everyone, the smell of burning building, burning flesh, burning jet fuel could not be washed away. The heroism of ordinary people, the bravery of emergency services officers was extraordinary in an unprecedented set of events across several states. The number of citizens from all parts of the world who perished was unprecedented.
I know that other places; Israel, Palatine, Ukraine, etc are experiencing daily/hourly bombings.
I am just overwhelmed by all the violence and memories today.
