I recently received an email from USFS to renew my Friends of Figure Skating membership. I used that opportunity to respond with my concerns about Peacock. I'll leave their (sort of non-) response below. This leads me to believe what others have said in this thread: this is being driven by Peacock/NBC rather than USFS. That being said, I hope USFS continues to advocate for fans and skaters, and they should get the USOC and/or the ISU involved if it would help. There has to be a way to make this work.

"Thank you for reaching out and for your support of U.S. Figure Skating. I will forward your comment to others on our staff who work with Peacock and televising our events. We appreciate you sharing your concerns."

Popped in to Peacock and there is no skating content at all - reading back I should have realized this was coming. I'm annoyed I got conned into shelling out for the whole year - it's not the amount of dollars but the principle of it. Meh.

So Peacock isn't going to be showing any figure skating this season? Well that sucks i've been watching US Nationals online going to back to 2011 with the Icenetwork then when NBC started streaming it online the last few years and i loved being able to watch the younger skaters coming up in Novice and Junior but i guess that's done and over with now. 😠

Peacock is LIVE streaming events, like U.S. Classic last month, but on demand videos have NOT been made available.

Skate America (refer to this post), Sectionals & U.S. Nationals have the Peacock logo next to them on this page: https://www.usfigureskating.org/watch

We're still waiting for NBC Universal/USFS to publish the 2022-23 figure skating viewing schedule online (I'm sure a new thread will be created when it happens).

They’ll show Grand Prix, US Nationals and Worlds but only live.
Don’t know if or how, but if music returned to instrumental only, maybe replays would be possible because no royalties would be due per replay for copyrighted music.
Sigh!!!

USFS just announced the streaming/TV coverage for figure skating this season.

The language specifies that events will be livestreamed on Peacock. No mention of event archives/replays. :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

They better change the ad they're running in Skating magazine to promote Peacock coverage (it says "live and on-demand"). :shuffle:

Hard to tell with the time difference, but it looks like most Nats (Senior) events will be broadcast on TV, so we can at least DVR them. But probably not the first groups.

I'd get rid of Peacock over this but I get it for free.

Not being able to watch the skating when it's convenient for me is part of the whole appeal of streaming. I don't even want to watch them weeks later. Just on the same weekend as they happen but not at 3am.

That's how I feel. Especially since I'm now job hunting and won't necessarily be able to watch with one eye while working from home during the day if I get a job that requires me to be in the office instead.

Even if I expected this, I am still very angry. I'm on an antenna and don't always get good reception on NBC. I have no access to USA or E!. I also noticed that there isn't anything mentioned about Synchro Nationals and Worlds which were covered on Peacock last year so I guess the only thing being covered is Synchro Worlds and that is on USA.

I already got rid of Peacock. I'm not too worried about finding a stream for the international events. The only one I'm trying to figure out at the moment is US Nationals. Hopefully something will change between now and then.

Assuming we can get a VPN service working, I'll probably keep Peacock just for Nationals and then cancel.

I'm discouraged by this whole thing. The fact that it happened in the first place, the way it's been handled, the lack of honest communication around it. It's disheartening.

ETA: Here we have what looks like confirmation of no replays/archives/video on demand :angryfire :

I'm done. I am probably pretty much done with figure skating this year.

My options are to watch it real time on Peacock which doesn't work for those of us with a life or be subjected to the sideshow act...

Guess they don't need fans and won't miss this one.

Peacock just got cancelled

Here's a press release on NBC's site with more details on times, etc. Only mentions "live streaming", never says anything about "on demand". And looking at many of those times, esp. when comps are in Japan or when you convert the times to here on Pacific time it's ridiculous to expect us fans to be watching live!

I would drop Peacock but I had to subscribe so my mom could watch her Days of Our Lives soap.

This is all very disappointing. I haven't looked into the alternatives but I will be.

I guess NBC/Peacock is just too big to need to care about a small audience, but I hope USFSA will realize this is harmful to their sport and they need to be looking to change who is handling the streaming.

Worlds is listed on the TV chart. Although with it being in Japan it will be almost impossible to watch live. NBC will show 2 hours on that Sat night and will have their usual 3-hour wrap-up show 2 weeks later.

I hope the ISU YT channel likes my Opera browser.

It does make you wonder about the decision to put all their eggs in the NBC basket when they folded IceNetwork. :(

Well, what other basket is there? Things were fine until those punks decided to sue NBC/KniFraz during the Olympics for using their shitty cover of House of the Rising Sun, and the writing's been on the wall with regard to NBC's legal department ever since. I do hope that the USFS isn't locked in for several more years with NBC though and can explore other options once the contract comes up for renewal.

I was referring to Worlds Synchro which is only listed on USA. Both Synchro Nationals and Synchro Worlds were on Peacock earlier this year.

Ah, I didn't scroll down far enough. It might just be an oversight. Or perhaps Synchro Nats (and Sectionals) is on the Fan Zone instead. Which might mean no live streaming but it would be on-demand/archived.

I feel like cancelling but it’s the only way I can watch figure skating. Some GP events will be during times I can watch live. Worlds? Not sure. Others have discussed getting a con so yiu can watch from other countries’ streaming services. VPN cost @$5 /month minimum.

@DreamSkates I think the VPN would give you access to the ISU stream which is archived so you could watch when you have time just like we could with Peacock up until this season. Currently we can watch JGP ISU archives because no one has paid to stream the Junior Grand Prix events in the U. S. With Peacock streaming the other events and competition in the U. S. all of those events are blocked here.

The big problem is U. S. Nationals which usually are not available on the ISU stream.
I think the only way to watch U. S. National might be with Peacock. I've read comments that the 2022 U. S. Nationals were streamed to watch on the ISU feed but I'm not sure if that is correct or that the same thing would happen in 2023.

If I get a VPN I would probably spend the $4.99 and have Peacock also just for the week of Nationals.

US Nationals were streamed on the official Olympics YT channel last year. I have no idea if that's the plan for this year or if it was just a one-off because it was an Olympic year and interest was so high. And, even if it is streamed there, YT channel owners can choose to live stream only and remove the video for playback afterward, so there's zero guarantee that we'll be able to watch on-demand.

This situation really, really sucks for anyone who has any sort of life or work commitments and can't watch in real-time that particular week.

Euros and US Nationals are the same week and I’m sure there will be overlap. Not great for those of us that like to focus on one live and then watch the replay of the other.

Forgive me since I am not a violent person, but I would like to beat the snot out of the people that triggered this mess that will impact serious fans. Casual fans who are ok with a couple hour recap won't be hurt at all - just fans who really want to see every competitor in every discipline.

There is a program, for a fee, called Audials. It allows you to record any streaming services. This may be handy for skating on Peacock. I haven't used it, but may consider it. As long as the recording is for personal use, it is legal.

Here is a YouTube explaining it:

The software can be purchased for $39.99 per year or $59.99 one time.

Here is where to get it:
