Paul and Islam: "No Matter What"

Loved their ALS challenge. One of the best ones I've seen for keeping the focus on the disease. And cute, obviously!

Man, this is turning out to be an incredibly long off season! It's the middle of August, and still no FD news, still no Senior B assignment confirmation... feels like we're in a time warp. I was so disappointed they didn't go to Thornhill, I was going to try to go this year to see them. But they know what's best for them, of course. They really have the opportunity to make a statement this season, so hopefully the extra time will pay off and result in some very special programs :)

In the meantime, I have something to share - video of their new gala from the Margaret Garrison Show! My apologies for not getting around to posting it sooner. Still cannot get over how exquisite this program is

THANK YOU! You know how much I loved this program! I never thought I'd actually see a recording from the show.
They're just so classy, aren't they? They seem to have the ability to ooze sophistication no matter what they do. I loved that EX. They capture that 'old Hollywood' feeling so well.

This off season is SO long!

Thank you so much, canadablue! It's so much better than most exhibitions that competing ice dancers usually do. Really nice choreography, and they gave a great performance, especially Alexandra.

:lol: oh, it's just me with my facebook aversion.. of course the first thing I saw was the facebook logo on the side. What do I need to do to see this.. (just call me out of touch technologically.) what am I being asked to log in or sign up for ?

If I can't get to see it , I'm going to sit in the corner and pout. ;)

Oh! I thought you couldn't access the video of their gala!

You Got it ...:fragile:

I can't...

Sometimes those types of videos won't play on the screen. I think it has something to do with the version of java. I know that for me it played on one computer and didn't play on another. You should try downloading it. It will save in mp4 format, which every computer should be able to play.

Paul & Islam will begin their season this October at the Skate Canada Autumn Classic!

I'm so excited! I had hoped they would compete there so that we wouldn't have to wait until CoC to see their programs. I was hoping to attend the competition myself (although I might not be able to). Has any ticket/schedule info been posted?

They are very good but lack the superior talent of Piper & Poirier! They can remain 3rd in Canada with V&M retired withs ome hard work though.

While I agree that Paul is a superior skater I believe that Piper has a long long way to go. I enjoy Paul and Piper more but I can see that together Paul and Islam are a superior team. Unfortunately they have been error prone in the past excepting last year. Their FD at Skate Canada was just wonderful.

Will we ever find out what they are going to skate to? Can`t wait to see their programs. The thing that makes P/I right now superior to G/P is Alexandra Paul. She is just fabulous.

Alexandra is awesome, and Mitch is no slouch, perhaps not as good as Poirier but pretty close. I like them much better then P/P. They also have a much better connection to each other which I also appreciate.

Clarie I think they have a different type of connection. Piper and Paul have a pretty good connection on and off the ice. It's a more youthful one.

Out of curiosity, how would you define/explain P/I's connection? Personally I've never though of G/P as 'youthful,' though I can see what you mean, so I'd love to know your thoughts on P/I in that respect.

The connection between Paul and Islam is deeper and more romantic. Greater subtlety.

Paul and piper are more playful and fun. The Hitchcock last year was sombre and out of the comfort zone but I thought very successful. Paul has a fabulous back!

You're welcome, lauravvv and skatingfan04! It's really impressive how much content there is for a gala program. I wish more teams did difficult dance programs like these. I's why many of us are fans of the sport in the first place, we want to see more!

Looks like some people had trouble with the file - here it is on youtube.

I think what people mean by "connection" is important here. For many ice dance fans, connection is about the partners' ability to interact with and adjust to each other's movement so that they match and skate as an inseparable unit, rather than a more superficial characterization of how they "act" on the ice. There's actually an awesome quote by Mitch himself from a recent interview:

"“Movement and your ability to dance and have a connection with a partner and move with another person is vital, and it’s a lot of what makes up our sport and I think that’s incredible,” says Islam. “I know Alex and I both enjoy that aspect probably more than anything — the ability to have a connection and to be able to move as one is something that we both really enjoy, and it’s something that like I said has come naturally to us.”"

G/P do not have near the same degree of difficult interdependent movement that P/I do in their programs, they don't skate as one. So by this definition of connection, G/P are by far the inferior team. Some people seem to find their playful vibe entertaining, but that's just a preference, not a way to decide which team is better. Similarily, P/I's subtle romantic thing is exactly my cup of tea, but it's not why they should be beating G/P, and not what I would mean if I praised their connection.

Even though it's kind of a moot point when both skaters, in theory, need to meet the criteria for the mark they receive, I'm curious what specific aspects of Paul's skating people think are consistently superior to P/I's? (Other than his back - do you mean his posture, or just the way he's built?) Perhaps he was better at one point in time, but P/I's smoothness and power have improved dramatically, and attempting to synch up with Piper for a few seasons hasn't done Paul's skating any favours.

While P/I had some spectacularly unfortunate injuries and errors up until last season, it's something that they've been steadily overcoming and shouldn't be something that counts against them going forward. (It may, in real terms, but reputation judging is supposed to be a thing of the past.) I also don't think G/P can be held up as a good example of consistency. They have routinely struggled to get their twizzle levels, often making visible errors in that element, and they've been blessed with their sloppy execution being ignored at certain competitions.

Yes, I meant Paul's posture and the way he holds himself.
Never said the GP didn't make errors just that PI did and it held them back.

Under Krylova they have improved a great deal.

I couldn't have said it better Canadablue. That is the very essence of why I like them so much. They portray that feeling of togetherness whether it's romantic or sexual tension between a man and woman into their dance.....very much like V/M, but have their own style of doing it. I hope ice dance goes back in that direction after the past couple of years.

Mitchell he weak link of their team, and Piper of theirs. However Paul is stronger than the strong skater of P&I, Alexandra Paul, while Piper Gilles is stronger than the weaker skater of the P&I, Mitchell. In other words Paul > Alexandra >> Piper > Mitchell

Paul > Alexandra >> Piper > Mitchell

Oh come on! Piper can barely execute her elements. If you want to gripe about Mitch's posture I can handle that (which I don't think is any worse than Paul's. Mitch can get a little too soft and floppy at times with his shoulders and arms, but overall his frame is excellent in hold and his posture is wonderful in lifts. Poirier has a very straight back, I'll agree, but he often looks rigid to me. Good posture is supposed to have a fluidity to it, not look like you're skating with a rod in your spine.), but suggesting that any aspect of his skating is worse that Piper's is ridiculous. His depth of edge is far superior, he has a much better runof the blade, and he can execute changes of direction in an out of hold that Piper would never be able to handle.
