This thread is for official announcements via the skaters' own social media accounts and/or links to news articles.

Friendly request: A skater retirement speculation thread is in the Trash Can (feel free to post/discuss any guesses & assumptions there :)): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/skater-retirements-in-2026.113544/

Kaori Sakamoto (JPN), 25 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00014151.htm), announced last June her plan to retire after this current season - link to her GSD news thread that was created in June 2025: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...lans-to-retire-after-season-2025-2026.112865/

Eva-Lotta Kiibus (EST), 22 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00102060.htm) - from the OES News thread in November 2025:
Eva Lotte Kiibus has retired 😢
Nov. 18:
Her post today (includes an English version) is worth reading: https://www.instagram.com/p/DRMRPIFiHJT/
For 18 years I’ve been giving all I have and more to skating. Devoted to my dreams and goals, never stopping. Falling and rising again and again. Fighting with everything that came my way. Until the day there was no fight left in me. For the past year i’ve been struggling with burnout. I tried to find a way out, with the help of professionals. Trying to push the problem up the hill when it was clearly too heavy to hold. The quality of my everyday life, my mental and physical health were alarmingly poor. Figure skating was my life, it was everything I breathed and lived for. To achieve results over average, you need to train over average. But this wasn’t possible anymore. I am not the kind to surrender easily or lower my goals. The possible results wouldn’t have satisfied me nor been worth the price that came with it.
I am forever thankful to the people who were standing strongly next to me all these years. To the people who gave me their knowledge, time and energy. I will keep my head up and be proud of my journey.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Kai Jagoda (GER), 25 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00054798.htm), announced his retirement after winning the bronze at Nationals - his Dec. 16, 2025 post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DSVPoU6iMdK/
One last dance -
After these really good Nationals I have decided to stop skating on a competitive level. The last years had been full with ups and downs, for me as a person, but also as an athlete it’s been a crazy ride.
I can’t even describe how grateful I am for all the people around me and everyone who supported me, especially in the last year, it was probably the hardest time I had to get through.
Nonetheless I can end this chapter with a big smile and I’m looking forward to the next steps.

Burak Demirboga (TUR), 29 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00013414.htm) - from posts in the OES News thread on December 2025:
Burak Demirboğa, 29, coached by Rana Belkis Göçmen since he was 6 years old ... "will take to the ice for the last time at the Turkish FS Championships [Dec. 19-21, 2025] to be held in Kocaeli, where he started his sport, and will bring his athletic career to an end."
Turkish fed. held a special ceremony after the Nationals Men's FS to honor Burak Demirboga's career as well as his coach (9 photos): https://www.instagram.com/p/DSiW_wSDIV0/
His coach posted this throwback photo with a young Burak captioned "25 straight YEARS after saying "I don't want a female mentor" !!!!":
Demirboga's own photos and message thanking everyone who supported him during his career (Dec. 22, 2025):
Auto-translation of the beginning:
I've been dreading this day for a long time. Saying goodbye to the ice has always been a very hard idea for me, and I didn’t want to think about it, when it was possible. But the time has come.
My dear teacher, the one who has been with me since I opened my eyes; with whom we won all the successes together, some days we cried together from joy and some days from sadness, every time I enter the exit, in whom I trust saying "I have a teacher Rana"... @rana_gocmen
I forever thank you for bringing me this far.

Tatsuya Tsuboi (JPN), 23 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00054883.htm) - "I'm happy to end it here," says Tatsuya Tsuboi, who suddenly announces his retirement after placing 13th at the All Japan Championships. He plans to pursue research at Kobe University's Graduate School. [Japanese article link]

Ava Marie Ziegler (USA), 19, following her WD before the start of 2026 Nationals: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTQSl6iDrlt/
I’m writing to share that I’ve decided to step away from competitive skating. Over the past two years, l’ve faced significant challenges, including two surgeries in just six months. While I am incredibly grateful to the doctors who provided such excellent care, the journey back has been difficult. I worked as hard as I could to rebuild my strength and regain my jumps, spins, and confidence, but I haven’t been able to return to the level needed for competition.
This process has taken a heavy toll on me both mentally and physically. Skating has been a massive part of my life and has given me so many wonderful opportunities. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me get to where I am today especially my amazing coaches and family who helped me through the good and bad. I would never have been able to make it this far without them.

Michael Xie (USA), 20 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00111712.htm), who placed 14th a few days ago in his 3rd U.S. Nationals as a Senior and is in his 3rd year at the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in data science & linguistics (includes skating clips of a young Michael):
“While I dedicate so much of my life to skating, I walk away from the rink with so much more.”

It’s undeniable that my interests have diversified, and my time in the competitive skating world is coming to an end. With increasing pressures of strenuous university courses, career advancements, personal relationships, and the desire to live my life and let loose, it’s become difficult to carve time out of the day to maintain my time at the rink.

The above quote from one of my best friend’s college essay has been resonating with me recently. looking back on my 10.5 years of training and competing across the world, i walk away with so many incredible memories, sustained relationships, and irreplicable lessons i carry with me everyday. i’m beyond grateful for everybody who has molded me on this journey; not exclusively coaches but also my training mates, competitors, and supporters - i want to express my sincere gratitude to anyone i’ve interacted with on the way. from parents at icetown carlsbad giving me advice on my spins to an “old lady fan” supporting me during tough runthroughs, every piece of advice has guided me to the place I stand today.

Thank you especially to @mari.malama @nanitanaka @axisoniceofficial for continued support through hard times and to my family for encouraging me wholeheartedly through my adventure. While some seasons were difficult, I do not regret a single decision my family has made to advance my training. my mother was always a phone call away to remind me of my goals and to guide me back to the right path; my father was there to handle tough conversations.

Looking towards the future, I plan on competing collegiately and continuing to put in the work academically and professionally to develop my interpersonal skills further.

Thank you all again for this journey - M谢

Sihyeong Lee (KOR), 25 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00054720.htm):
Auto-translation:
Little late start to fourth grade of elementary school
All of my life and has been
I'm about to finish my player life now.

What I could come so far
With my heart who loved and loved to skate,
Many teachers who taught me with love and support,
Teacher Choi Hyung Kyung who led me until the end.
Thank you so much for supporting my dream,
For those who love my skating,

And thanks to my mother who raised me up to now.

To many of you who have been with me
I want to express my sincere gratitude.

So the end is another beginning,
I will try to live a life where I can give as much love as I receive.

2010–2026
Thank you for everything you have done.

2 web Sportiva articles (sports magazine published by Shueisha): December 21st, Tokyo. Two female figure skaters announced their retirement and took on the challenge of their "last dance" at the All-Japan Championships, the nation's most prestigious competition. Both have competed in the All-Japan Championships more than 10 times. That alone should be enough to convey the kind of skaters they are. The rink, where they skated with a myriad of emotions, shone like a celebration.

^^^ Thanks.
If this is meant to be an omnibus post for retirements that occurred during the season
Yes, thank you! I had a feeling I was missing a few announcements from earlier in the season.

Technically last season and originally posted in the Korean news thread... Yelim Kim (KOR) announced her retirement on February 14, 2025:
Yelim placed 8th at her only Worlds in 2022 and was the 2023 4CC silver medalist (2024 NHK Trophy was her final international): https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00054721.htm
She was a commentator for KBS Sports during 2026 Korean Nationals.

John Crafoord (SWE), now 25, announced his retirement - due to an ongoing back injury :( - on Dec. 9, 2025:
He and his twin sister Greta (who hopes to find a new pair partner) started their competitive career in the USA (they were the 2017 U.S. Novice Pairs bronze medalists) and their final international together was the Road to 26 Trophy in Feb. 2025: https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00103088.htm
The Swedish federation's press release was posted in the Pairs general discussion thread:

Ema Doboszová (SVK), 22 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00106134.htm), announced her retirement on November 24, 2025:
Excerpt:
Throughout my whole career no obstacle was ever too high. But at one point, I had tried climbing the same mountain so many times that I finally realized how exhausted I truly was. After the last injury, my body recovered, but my mind did not.
And that’s when you have to choose yourself.
And that’s what I did.
Although I might not have been a big name in the skating world, I always wanted to touch people’s lives in a pure and honest way - I wanted to bring the joy to everything I did.

Elizabeth Tkachenko, 19/Alexei Kiliakov, 20 (ISR) announced their retirement on August 6, 2025:
They first competed in the USA (won Juvenile, Intermediate & Novice national titles; competed in 1 JGP; placed 7th twice in Junior in 2020 & 2021) before switching to Israel (their final competition was the Lake Placid Ice Dance International in late July 2025): https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00108071.htm

Kristen Spours (GBR) - BBC article dated Jan. 14, 2026 during Europeans in Sheffield:
Spours says she will leave the sport this year aged only 25 after recently recovering from surgery following a spinal injury sustained last March. [...]
"I am really grateful to have my family here. I am planning to retire after [the World Championships in] Prague, so this is the last time my dad will ever see me skate.
"My mum is able to come to Milan [for the Winter Olympics], but my dad has a health issue so can't fly. I am grateful he can see me one last time."

In the post-FS interview, Maurizio Zandron confirms it is his last appearance at Europeans and that will retire after Worlds

“I am so emotional. It really couldn’t have been better for my last European Championships. It’s also a bit of a full-circle moment because 16 years ago I competed here in Sheffield at the Junior Grand Prix.
...
I mean, I will go to Worlds, but this was definitely a very nice and special goodbye at the European Championships

...
I do have my degree as a tax consultant and I will partly work in that field. But I also really hope to work as a choreographer, and I’m thinking of doing the exam to become a technical specialist. I would also love to participate in shows if any opportunities come up.”

Auto-translation:

💙 It’s time.. The time has come to officially say goodbye to my racing figure skating career, and also to one of the most important chapters of my life and childhood!

It was a journey full of emotions, hard work, falls and victories - on and off the ice. After 20+ years I am leaving a sport that shaped me, taught me discipline, perseverance and gave me friends, languages and memories for a lifetime!

I’d like to give a big thank you to all the coaches who helped me grow and improve on my journey, also to all my teammates and friends on the ice and of course to the fans and others who have supported me and stood by me during these years.

The biggest thank you goes to my family - especially my mom and dad who have always supported me from the very beginning and stood by me! 🙏🏽❤️

Even though this chapter ends now, I’m definitely not stopping on the ice - I’ll continue to educate, train, help young talent on their journey and also find ways to take the sport further! 🚀
————————————
I combine my personal experience of injury and pain into my RE:MOVE https://www.instagram.com/re.move_cz/ project, where I help people and athletes regain confidence in their bodies and permanently relieve pain through movement and conscious self-work.

What I’ve learned over the years in professional sports - body, mind, determination and falls - I now pass on. And even though I no longer race, I know that I carry the most important thing in the world of sport with me.

PK 👋🏽 THANK YOU 🙏🏽

Kristina Isaev (GER) announced her retirement at 24 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00015027.htm) on June 6, 2025, to start her coaching career:
Auto-translated excerpt:

18 years of Figure Skating – 18 years of unforgettable moments, hard work and valuable experiences that have accompanied me on my way and will take me with me for the rest of my life.
With a crying but also a smiling eye, I want to inform you that my active career as a performance athlete is over.
I'm incredibly proud of myself - because despite little "talent", I achieved exactly what I always dreamed of when I was a little girl with so much more diligence, discipline and passion:
🥇 2-time German champion
🌍 2x World Championship participant
🌍 2x European Championship participant
But the most important thing for me was the way there – a path full of ups, downs, tears and moments of happiness that can hardly be put into words.

2018 Olympian & 3-time national champion Emmi Peltonen (FIN), now 26 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00014671.htm), formally announced her retirement on April 14, 2025 (message in English):

Seoyoung Wi (KOR), 20 (https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00104794.htm) announced her retirement late last season on Feb. 4, 2025 (shortly before Yelim Kim did) after 15 years of skating:
Auto-translated excerpt:

There have been a lot of hard moments
There are so many times I wanted to quit but
Help me outside and
Teachers who were cheering me on
I have come this far because of you
I was able to pull off the power. ☺️

Azusa Tanaka (JPN), now 20, announced her retirement on July 11, 2025:
Auto-translated excerpt:
Thank you very very much to everyone who supported me since I was single.
The support from so many people has helped me get this far.
Saying goodbye to something I've been dealing with for 12 years is sad, and I can't imagine what I'm going to overthink since I've stepped away from skating.
For now I want to take care of myself and take it easy.
Injury is fine now. Healed safely.
Thank you all for your concern.

She was 14th in her only JGP in Lake Placid in late August 2019 at the age of 13 but, despite the jump problems, I really enjoyed watching her charming FS to Pride and Prejudice (music from both the 2005 film & 1995 TV series) in practice and in competition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWnsyt_7N38

Tomoki Hiwatashi (USA) - after finishing skating for Four Continents in China on Jan 25, 2026

Source: Mainichi Newspaper

Former World Junior Champion Tomoki Hiwatashi Announces Retirement from Amateur Competitions

After his performance, he reflected, “I thought to myself that making a little mistake even right up until the very end (of my amateur career) is just like me. But I was able to skate happily, and I feel hat it was a skating career I could be incredibly satisfied with. I'm glad I could finish on such a good note.”

He plans to start working for a trading company in Chicago, USA. “I also want to stay involved in skating,” he said, adding that while working, he aims to obtain certification as a technical specialist in the future.
