New figure skating podcast: Iced Coffee

So while we're all waiting for Rostelecom to start and always thirsty for more skating media/analysis, I thought I'd come out of lurkdom to announce a new figure skating podcast I wanted to share with fellow skating fans.

My name is Joe Erbentraut and a dear friend, Sylvia Rodemeyer, and I just launched our own new podcast called Iced Coffee for the Olympic season. We've been watching and/or participating in the sport for 20+ years -- Sylvia as a skater, coach and journalist, myself as a journalist and both of us as long-time fans as well.

We already had been hosting a pop culture podcast called Coffee and Bars (yes, it's a Kirstie Alley/Drop Dead Gorgeous reference) and this new podcast essentially lives within that podcast.

On our weekly episodes, we'll be recapping each of the season's major events. In addition, we'll be exploring parallels between skating and popular culture, as well as those between the current skating season and our nostalgia for the sport's heydays in the '90s. We also anticipate bringing on some fellow fans and skaters as guests in the weeks and months ahead.

Our first two episodes are live below, offering our Grand Prix season preview and a little bit more background on ourselves and how we were attracted to the sport. We'd love it if you give us a listen and we hope you enjoy it!

Cup of China recap: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coffee-and-bars/e/52159252?autoplay=true

I enjoyed the analysis of the various commentary teams' calls of Javi Fernandez' fp at CoC.
On CBC, someone indicates that Javi is only missing one medal, and Kurt Browning quips: "I know the feeling..."
Joe on Tracy Wilson's call: "Tracy knew something wasn't right... as Javi was falling apart, Tracy fell apart."

What network broadcast did Tracy commentate for?

I totally agree with the assessment of ladies event. Wakaba Higuchi deserved to win, especially over Zagitova. ITA that Radionova was rather lucky to be third. Mihara was very good, and I agree it seemed like she was being held down a bit. I also agree with the assessment of Javi's fp music. Great insights overall. Thanks Joe & Sylvia. :)

BTW, where are these mysterious articles by Dick Button about the GPs hiding?

Hi @aftershocks! Thanks for listening and for the feedback! Tracy has been commentating for Olympic Channel. We're planning on doing more commentator team analyses for future events but my oh my is it time-consuming! I don't know how others manage to watch multiple commentaries regularly..

I actually need to ask my co-host the same question re: the Dick Button articles. I think his main commentary I've been able to find is this interview he did with Jack Gallagher last month (where he wisely warned of Yuzuru overtraining). If anyone else knows where further Dick remarks on the current season can be found, please let us know. If only we could get him tweeting again! https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports...c-legend-buttons-advice-hanyu-dont-overtrain/

Also, we're totally up to date on Grand Prix recaps and are planning something fun for this weekend's Skate America coverage. We're also lining up some exciting interviews with guest hosts. If folks need some listening while avoiding politics talk at the Thanksgiving table, give us a listen and let us know what you think!

The Grand Prix formerly known as Lalique on Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coffee-and-bars/e/52312501
NHK on Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coffee-and-bars/e/52255936

Where do I find the Olympic Channel?

@barbarafan, I believe Olympic Channel is available via most cable providers now. I use Sling TV and it's also available there through their Sports Extra option, and I think it's also on Direct TV Now.

If you're just looking for clips on YouTube with the Tracy commentary, look for the ones labeled "OC" (as opposed to ESP -- EuroSport -- NBC or CBC).

Channels change depending on where you live. If you go to your cable provider’s website, there is usually a place to put in your zip code and get your channel lineup. Or call their customer service.

Note that the Olympic Channel is an NBC Channel but it’s cable not broadcast, and it’s different than NBC Sports Network. I had to upgrade my package to get it. I’m glad I did, though, because I can finally watch the Grand Prix on my iPhone!

thank-you so much...I will look it up under nbc this time....I like commentary when it is good..so with cbc I either get no commentary or wait for the show & have to listen to Carole Lane's snark.

The Olympic channel, as far as I can tell, is not available in Canada.

Update: Our Skate America recap is now live on Stitcher and Apple Podcasts. In addition to outlining the madness that was Lake Placid, we were missing pro competitions so much this holiday weekend that we played a little game we called Fake Ice Wars, giving scores to “team USA” and “world team” skaters in the gala. Hope you enjoy! https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coffee-and-bars/e/52395090
Ah, too much fun! Love what you are doing here for the sport. Keep up the good work!! :40beers:

In case you're not totally overloaded with skating this week, our Olympic team event recap is now live, featuring guest co-host Jocelyn Jane Cox, a humor writer, skating coach and former elite skater who just published a new book on skating called First Day on the Ice.

Listen here or on Apple Podcasts or Libsyn! Thanks! https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/coffee-and-bars

Thanks for your previews and recap rundowns! I enjoyed hearing from Melissa and Denis. I've missed them. And I'm happy to hear from Jeremy too! Why isn't Jeremy recapping men's event? Or is that coming later?

Thanks! We were going to have him for the men's, but had some scheduling issues! He touched briefly on a few elements of the men's event during our chat, though, particularly on the Nathan hype and quad mania.
