Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

A day at the YTS seminar

Usually those types of proclamations (celebrating local hero) are for that specific date/year only. :)

But we can celebrate Nathan any day. :)
It could be different for the state proclamation but this is what was written about the SLC proclamation.
On Wednesday afternoon, before performing in the Stars on Ice tour in West Valley City alongside fellow Olympic veterans, Chen was awarded a proclamation by Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams and council members Michael H. Jensen and Jenny Wilson forever making May 16, “Nathan Chen Day.”

So it does sound as if May 16 is indeed SLC's "Nathan Chen Day" in perpetuity.

I think you are correct that the statewide Nathan Chen Day was proclaimed specifically to be May 18, 2022.

"... In a special proclamation issued Wednesday, [Utah] senate president Stuart Adams and Utah Sports Commission CEO Jeff Robbins, in consultation with Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, declared May 18, 2022, as Nathan Chen Day ..."
(published May 18, 2022)

(y) I am happy to 🎉

"May 16, 2018" and "16th day of May 2018" are specified in the Salt Lake proclamation, per Minutes of Salt Lake County Council meeting:

" THE SALT LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL, STATE OF UTAH, MET ON TUESDAY, MAY 15, 2018
... Mayor Ben McAdams read the following proclamation declaring May 16, 2018, as Nathan Chen Day:
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen was born and raised in Salt Lake County; and
WHEREAS, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City inspired Nathan Chen to become an Olympian; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen, at the age of three, had his first skating lesson at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex, but refused to leave the ice and ultimately left – somewhat involuntarily – in his mother’s arms; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen continued to skate and train at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex pursuing his dream to be an Olympian; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen predicted at age ten that he would be an Olympian in the 2018 Winter Olympics; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen is the current 2018 World Champion of men’s figure skating; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Chen not only fulfilled his dreams of being an Olympian at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but also won a Bronze Medal in the Team Event and made Olympic history by landing SIX quadruple jumps in ONE competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics;
WHEREAS, we are HUGE Nathan Chen fans.
NOW, THEREFORE, Mayor Ben McAdams and the Salt Lake County Council, do hereby proclaim the 16th day of May 2018 as
Nathan Chen Day
ADOPTED on this 15th day of May 2018.
By /s/ BEN MCADAMS Mayor By /s/ MICHAEL H. JENSEN Council Member, District 2

I hope this direct link will work for minutes from meeting on May 15, 2018:

ETA:
Unrelated to either of the Nathan Chen Days ... but perhaps a mention from last week in another thread would be worth repeating in this thread.
Because of the two Olympic medals Nathan earned in 2022, he was able to designate two 2022 recipients of USOPC Order of Ikkos medals to acknowledge their roles in his success. The 2022 Ikkos recipient list was not published until this month. As 2022 individual medalist, Nathan designated Raf; and as 2022 team event medalist, Nathan designated his mother Hetty.
(As 2018 team event medalist, Nathan had designated Raf, which I'm guessing already was covered in this thread long ago.)

Nathan just chillin nowadays (while studying for the MCAT)

Flashback to babies Nathan and Mariah (slide 9)

I wonder if anyone has approached Nathan about commentating skating events. He is so well spoken, I think he'd be great at it.
I think Nathan much prefers the behind the scenes stuff like coaching, and he's never been that comfortable speaking in public. Vincent, on the other hand, appears to enjoy speaking and therefore might be better suited as a commentator.

I've always been impressed by the way Nathan handles himself in interviews and public speaking.

I agree that Vincent could be great at commentating too.

Nathan has certainly come a long way from the bashful 10-year-old being interviewed by Andrea Joyce at Nationals!
I'd be interested to see Vincent have a chance at the commentary booth as well. Nathan could be too busy with med school for the next few years.

Nathan returns to GPI in August for YTS seminar
