Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

Just got back from the Nashville show last night and I'll share a few thoughts on the event. I attended show in 2023 and attendance was a little down this year in comparison. 2023 had a country music theme so I suspect that was a contributing factor. Still, it was an enjoyable show and in some ways I prefer this format over ice shows with the typical gala format. The live music adds a lot to the fun and helps draw a different crowd than what you would typically see at SOI.

The skaters all seemed to be enjoying themselves and were well appreciated by the audience. Strangely, Nathan did not have a true solo program and instead was the featured performer in the group number I posted above. He also did not attempt any jumps aside from several backflips, which made me wonder if he is nursing an injury or was just physically not prepared to perform a full solo routine. That said, even without the jumps there was a special quality to his movements which clearly stood out from rest of the cast. I felt similarly about Katia Gordeeva.

If Nathan does not particiate in SOI in the Spring this will probably have been his last public performance for a very long time. His talents will be greatly missed.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A few odds and ends:

Shoma's former coach, Mihoko Higuchi, shared a list of some of her favorite skating programs:

Nathan was one of only 3 skaters (along with Shoma and Mao) to make the list twice at #2 Mozart and #12 Caravan. Other skaters on the list include Chan, P/C, Brown, Rippon, Aymoz, Wagner, Takahashi, Messing, Shimada, and Kim.

A belated Happy New Year from Nathan:

Unfortunately Nathan was feeling under the weather and couldn't attend his HOF induction ceremony. He did provide a video message, and hopefully they'll be able to do some type of ceremony for him in the future.

In the arena they played a video where Ashley Wagner and Adam Rippon spoke about Nathan.

Ukranian skater Kyrylo Marsak reveals when he became a Nathan Chen fan:

“well, my very first Olympics that I remember was Vancouver 2010, but the most memorable for me was the Olympics 2018 when Nathan Chen missed his short program. And that’s the moment when I became a Nathan Chen fan, and that’s why I started to look up to him, and I saw him grow as an athlete and as a person, and how he won the gold in Beijing with almost no concurrence. He was a class on his own. I still admire him as an athlete. He is really an athlete idol for me, also in the way that he was a student while skating. And I think if it was possible for him to study and skate, I think it is possible for me as well.”
