Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

If they do split them I would actually have Vincent do the SP. Vincent is too much a risk to bomb the LP for the Team Event IMO. He has been quite consistent in the short program overall this year.

Of course Nathan might do both, but if they do the split I would go that direction. More to do with Vincent than Nathan, as I am totally comfortable with Nathan doing either. But quite comfortable with Vincent doing the short, long not so much as he is too volatile.
Actually, it's worse to put your riskier skater in the SP because they can be buried with a 10/9-man roster. It's much safer in the LP where the worst they can do is place 5th.

CNN video interview

Jimmy Fallon gives Nathan and Hawayek/Baker conversation ice breaker suggestions.

Fun story of the Chen family at a Chicago chess tournament back in 2006. It provides a fascinating look at this talented group of siblings.

That is a good point. I was thinking Zhou was very unlikely to mess up the SP, but come to think of it that isn't even entirely true.

NBC's Nick Zaccardi spoke to Nathan's sister Alice about Nathan's 2018 Olympics experience: https://www.nbcolympics.com/news/daily-briefing-february-4-winter-olympics-tv-live-stream-schedule
Excerpt:
Chen says now that he doesn’t remember much about the 2018 Games. He had tunnel vision, and that was part of the problem.
“He was like, ‘I didn't even take any pictures last time,’” older sister Alice said.
Chen, the youngest of five children, brought a guitar and a basketball to the Games. He hopes to have a jam session (music, not hoops) with other athletes. He already took his U.S.-based sisters on a virtual tour of his accommodation.
“He's actually taking the time to absorb everything around him and experience what it is to be living as an Olympian,” Alice said.
The family, spread across San Francisco, New York and Portugal, plans to gather on Zoom to watch his skates for, possibly, his last Olympics.

Nathan is going to be interviewed on NBC news soon
By Lester Holt (last segment of the Nightly News broadcast).

ETA that it was a good interview :) - hopefully the video will be uploaded by NBC News later.

Interesting comment -

The order of events changed from Pyeongchang, when pairs followed the team event, and that means Chen and the rest of the men will be up next week. Pairs got the misfortune of heading to the back of the Olympic program, meaning they won't be on the ice again until Feb. 18 — for some, a full two weeks after their first taste of competition.

"We honestly got the best end of the draw," Chen said after his practice Thursday morning at Capital Indoor Stadium, the arena in the heart of Beijing known for being the home of "ping-pong diplomacy" in the 1970s. "The pairs will have the hardest time moving from the front end to the back end."
I'm guessing he was trying to be diplomatic?

They also just did a story on the afternoon news. Once it is posted to their website, I will post a link. Has some footage from practice.

Thanks for all the links and the heads up on the Holt interview. I really hope that Nathan is able to enjoy this Olympics. But, I also hope that he has great performances that make him happy. I know that he is trying to enjoy everything and he definitely seems to have a healthier perspective, but it's hard to believe that he is feeling anything other than tremendous pressure from others and from himself. I'm getting nervous for his skate, so I can't even imagine how nervous he is!

Whew, he did it! And under so much pressure, too! That was one of the best SP I've ever seen from Shoma.

BTW, the 2min Jurassic Dominion commercial debuted.

YAY NATHAN!!! :cheer: :cheer2: :respec: ⛸️ ⛸️ Awesome redemption in the Team Event for the Quad King! I had to work late last night, so I kept up with results with Jackie Wong's PBP! I was THRILLED when I read that Nathan landed everything, received a PB, just a smidge under Yuzu's record and slayed the TE demons of 4 years ago! He seems quite focused and when I watched the event on my dvr, he seemed rather stoic afterwards, celebrating his score with his teammates, but not too much - there's still work to be done in the days ahead! I hope he nails his next two programs in the individual event and medals - gold would be especially awesome of course! 😎

Eta: I wish that Andrea Joyce would stop bringing up the ghosts of 2018! Nathan needs to focus on the now, and not have his unfortunate SP skates at the 2018 Games constantly brought up in his face!
