Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

Eta: I wish that Andrea Joyce would stop bringing up the ghosts of 2018! Nathan needs to focus on the now, and not have his unfortunate SP skates at the 2018 Games constantly brought up in his face!
It's frustrating that all the interviewers ask him about that and it's such a focus of reporters and commentators. (Nobody mentions his 2018 Olympic long program). But, I did like his answer when he noted how inexperienced he was then and how much experience he has now, including yesterday's short program. It's a very healthy and realistic way for him to look at things.

Hopefully having a clean short at the Olympics now will mean that they can stop asking him about that (but also hopefully Nathan can relax more too knowing that he can trust himself and the process- he knows what to do).

Extended NBC interview:

Praise from former skaters:

Boitano: https://twitter.com/sofigurein/status/1489712713475534850

Translation by me:
4F 3A 4Lz3T Superman, where's the gravity? After the last jump I really loved the way he went into the steps at twice the speed. Everything was just so cool looking! Level 4 stsq is not enough to describe the sick sense of balance and musical interpretation! I want the beauty of his toes and fingertips to be shared!

I'm so happy for Nathan - he has so many sponsors and endorsements - a rarity nowadays for a U.S. figure skater, and especially for a male skater. In the past, the top stars were mostly women and they got the lion's share of endorsements, etc. Rake it in while you can Nathan - that's what I say! ????

Brezina interview:
How do you see the chances of Nathan?
Well, you probably saw Nationals, and it was not even his best skate. He fell, which is rare, seeing him fall, even in practice. Knowing what he is capable of and seeing him practice for the last two years I don't wish anything but him winning. If there's anyone that deserves to win the Olympics, for the way he works, and for his determination, it's definitely him. I don't know how anyone else trains, what they do, but purely from watching him on the ice every day and putting two hundred percent into what he does, it's just something out of this world. I've trained with people my whole life, that were European champions, world champions and Olympic medallists, and I've never seen in my entire career that determination that he has. It's really out of this world. One role plays his mum, she wants just the best out of him, one role plays Rafael [Arutunjan, the coach of Nathan Chen and Michal Březina] who prepared him for this. It's a long road, it takes very long time to get someone ready to be an Olympic champion. It doesn't just happen in one year. If there is anyone that deserves to win purely on the way he trains and the way he fights for everything in training, in competition, it is Nathan.

The Washington Post has a new interview with Nathan and Raf: https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor.../nathan-chen-figure-skating-beijing-olympics/

Arutyunyan has another story, one he says explains everything about determination and drive. When Chen was about 13 or 14, he got food poisoning right before a major competition and was vomiting in the hotel.

“You know how people get gray when they are sick?” Arutunyan recalls. “He was not gray; he was green.”

Arutyunyan suggested pulling out of the competition, but Chen refused.

That night, Arutyunyan stood beside the rink, begging Chen not to throw up on the ice but clutching a bucket just in case. Chen wound up winning.

“That’s what makes him.” Arutyunyan says.

I see the Today show interview with Jason and Mariah, LOVE it! ❤ However, I'm not seeing the Ballet West Academy shout out?

Interesting to hear Nathan talk about how superstitious he was going into the 2018 games. I always get a red flag vibe when athletes in any sport talk about elaborate rituals and superstitions. Routine is obviously good in helping you focus but seems best left to general activities rather than specific ones. Elaborate chains of events that have to happen perfectly are just setting an athlete up for failure if they think it all has to go just right before they can compete well.

“Just rest, get some food, do my chores, and go to bed,” Chen said when asked his plans for Monday night.

“So far, it’s been really enjoyable. I’m probably having more fun here than last time (in PyeongChang), as a result of the four years in between, getting a little bit more experience and having my friends here," he added.
“I would not get involved with interviews, Instagram, Twitter,” Boitano said. “I would just focus on the job at hand. I would unplug and focus completely on what I was doing.”

Chen seems to be embracing that advice, to the extent he can. He turned down a brief interview with NBC prior to the team short. He didn’t bring his personal cell phone with him to Beijing. Instead, he’s counting on his Team USA friends, his electric guitar and his basketball to help him decompress.

“My friends have really helped me stay grounded over the past four years,” Chen said. “Now having them here in person is really different (than in PyeongChang). Having Mariah (Bell), Jean-Luc (Baker), Kaitlin (Hawayek), Evan (Bates), Brandon (Frazier) — I’m missing a few names.”

Chen, Frazier, Bates and Baker are sharing an apartment in the Olympic Village.
