Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

You could tell he was nervous on the 4Lz but loosened up after that.

It's still baffling that he knew he doesn't usually do that great at the beginning of season, yet still went for such an insane layout.
I think from past experience, the first couple of competitions have never been perfect. I've never been peaking there. But it's definitely my responsibility to skate well. I wasn't at a place where I thought things were going to go downhill

Eternity was much better this time around and done with much more commitment, though I’m still not sold on the hodge podge. And he’s back ?…for now.

Article from Phil Hersh.
That is why Chen chose to go right back to the quad lutz rather than pick an easier jump to open Friday’s short program at Skate Canada in Vancouver.

“I definitely needed to get over that hurdle of the lutz,” Chen said.

Nathan on Russian news

Apparently Raf's accreditation was revoked for accidentally stepping outside the SC bubble boundaries.
Luckily Nathan is used to doing comps like JO and WTT by himself and should be fine. Sounds like Raf will be in the audience but still so annoying.

Even if Nathan is used to being without Raf that still could be a shock. I'm sure he'll be fine, but the universe is determined to give Nathan a hard time it seems.

He didn't warm up the quad lutz or did I miss it all together?

Elena Vaytsekhovskaya spoke to Arutunian about what happened: https://russian.rt.com/sport/article/922947-arutyunyan-akkreditatsiya-lishenie

Google translated excerpt:

- It turns out that now you are deprived of the opportunity to be present at the rink?

- Only as a spectator. I am calm for Nathan: he immediately told me not to worry about him. And that I can leave Vancouver earlier if I see fit. But I will of course stay. We will ride by correspondence.

- I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on a great start to the tournament: 106.72 points for Chen in the short program - an outstanding result.

- We still removed the quadruple flip from the program, replacing it with a sheepskin coat [4T+3T]. And everything immediately fell into place. Relatively speaking, the sheepskin coat allows you to dance, and the flip is too heavy an element. In addition, it goes at the end of the program, it is performed on the same foot as the lutz, and it is really too hard physically. And when an athlete feels that a certain percentage of a possible breakdown was initially included in the program, it also puts a heavy load on the head. Just few people understand this.

Some of Jackie Wong's tweets of Nathan's quotes from the Skate Canada International Men's medalists press conference:

Chen: Raf trains all of us to be pretty self-sufficient. We know what to do, it doesn't change. What went down was appropriate - keeping us all safe is the objective of the bubble. I'm glad he was still able to be in the arena, and he gave me a quick call before I skated
I was also at World Team Trophy without him, and I had my sub coach Jean-Luc (!!) with me. Raf's point when I skate is to hold my jacket for me anyway

Reducing the elements happened because I didn't really have much time from Skate America, and I'm dealing with a hip thing. Hopefully I can make GPF - I'll be tracking the GP and hoping for the best with that
Historically, I haven't done too many happy-go-lucky pieces. It's not necessarily a good reflection on me as a person. I've tended to like to skate to something slower in rhythm and pacing.
The final section was the first thing that we heard - that energy I projected at the end, we knew no matter what happened, it would bring in a lot of energy at the end. Lacrimosa is a very complex piece, there's a lot more work to be done, but it's a good start

My guess is that the hip issue is a chronic condition aggravated by the back-to-back scheduling, and that hopefully the time off will get him back in shape.

Gala schedule is up. Nathan skates 2nd to last and has an encore. Any guesses as to the encore? I think he'll do the Mozart chsq.

Just watched Nathan's exhibition at SCI. His encore was the last minute or so of Caravan and I'm pretty much convinced that what he really needs is to go back to either that SP or La Boheme. Stylistically, Eternity/Nemesis and the Nemesis original SPs are too similar to what he is doing, at least for the footwork/movement, in the Lacrimosa FS. I don't think people would be hating on the new FS if it didn't feel completely redundant to not only what he's done with his last two Free Skates but also what we're seeing in the Eternity/Nemesis SP this season.

If he's recycling put me on Team Caravan, La Boheme is along the same gloomy vein as his current programs

I think he should go back Caravan too. It will make more of a contrast to the FS and really shows off his ability to perform.
