Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

Mirai is completely a victim of politics and getting punished more severely than others. I cannot understand why. She should have been up there with Daleman and Choi completely underrotated her 3T. I'm proud of Mirai for throwing the 3A and fighting after that mistake. I hope she has a wonderful LP.
She did get rewarded in the team event LP with 137+ points. That's very good?!

There has been crazy scoring, but Mirai really should be behind Gabby in PCS. Her choreography and interpretation are not on the same level. That said, Mirai behind Choi is a crime! Kurt mentioned that Mirai had a seriously hard fall on the 3A in warm up. I know she has fallen hard before, but he said that this one was a bad fall - and I suspect he can tell the difference. She definitely earned the respect of the Canadian commentators the way she then just flew into the 3A in the program. Kurt, again, thinks she fell because it was over rotated. He also kept mentioning how fast she was especially into the jumps. That is huge for Mirai! She has clearly got past the crawling carefulness that has held her back in the past. I think her LP is a much better program than the SP so hopefully she can go out there and skate like she did in the team event.

What is so special about Gabby's interpretation? And even if it is better, is it 3 points better? Mirai should have averaged at least 8 on PCS, giving her a 32.

There really isn’t a lot of choreography in Mirai’s short. I think the music choice was a mistake. Mirai has improved her body movement, but it is still not clear and clean. There is a spot where she does a whole body movement, kind of wiggle for lack of a better word, right in time to the music, but she does it only at half strength. There just isn’t the purpose or clarity you see with Daleman. That said, PCS last night was just crazy. I would really like some of what those judges were smoking. Does anyone really think Med or Zag have skating skills anywhere in the same stratosphere as Patrick Chan? Because those judges do. I actually think that is the PCS category where Mirai is undermarked. Now that she is actually attacking, she is showing the judges her fabulous SS. For some reason they are just choosing not to see them.

Watching the landing of her 3A over and over on NBC, it seems like she struggled super hard for seconds to stay on 1 foot, then ultimately fell. I know she was trying hard to get that landing, but she would’ve actually saved herself from the 1.0 deduction by just stepping out and getting back into the program more quickly. It also may have saved her from getting straight -3.0 for GOE.

Slightly less negative GOE, no fall deduction, and even a possible bump in PCS for no disruption would have her ahead of Gabby and Da Bin. Ironic that the valiant effort to stay on 1 foot cost her more than just stepping out

I would be surprised if Nagasu continues after this season but I would never discount anything with her, she has proven people wrong more times than can count.

I do think she was still heavily undermarked. I kind of knew she would be though, she had to hit the triple axel cleanly to even be in contention. The judges have been lowballing her on PCS and GOE for awhile, and she definitely wasnt going to get any gifts. I admire her guts for going for it, and for skating such a strong program after the fall which you know she must have been gutted by. The shaky landing on the triple loop didnt do her any favors either, at that point she really had the kill the rest of the skate since as I mentioned sadly the judges were never going to do her any favors or hold her up.

I do agree with Chen getting the highest PCS of the 3 U.S girls but I would have Nagasu further ahead of her on technical when Chen badly stepped out of an underotated lutz attempt, and then did only a triple-double combo (although it was gutsy on Chen's part to throw the combo in at all). Really all 3 U.S girls were underscored to some extent relative to some of the others though.

I think Nagasu should be in the final flight over Kostner but realistically that would never happen unless Kostner skated exactly as poorly as she did and Nagasu hit the triple axel beautifully. It is a joke Kostner almost beat Kaori. The judging was whack all around but none of it was surprising either. Zagitova's PCS were comical for her Swan Lake on crack.

Mirai's success rate is much higher than 10%. She landed almost all of the ones she tried in practice at Nationals and the Olympics however today was not a good day and fell on almost all of them.

She didn't have a low chance of success. She has landed the jump 75% or higher in practice.

They've been saying the opposite on NBC during team event and last night, that she's struggled with it in practice for awhile.

But Jackie Wong posted just 2-3 days ago that her 3A was getting "better and better and better." I am under the impression that she just had problems yesterday. ?

@mag, I absolutely agree Chen is overrated and IMO she did not deserve either her U.S title over Wagner last year nor getting the 3rd spot on the Oly team over Wagner this year (and I am not even a Wagner fan). However I do think she deservedly had the highest PCS of the 3 Americans last night. Her program was musical and very nice apart from the rough jumps, and she hit the accents of the music well. It also looked to have the most choreographic detail of the three, and certainly a lot more than Tennell had. I would have had both her and Nagasu (and possibly Tennell, although Tennell has weak PCS at the international top level) higher than they were in PCS, although none at the very top obviously.

She struggled with it today in warm up and practice. They are showing the practices online and Jackie has been giving jump breakdowns every practice he goes to. Whoever you are attempting to quote on NBC is just wrong if they said anything like that.

And can we get the hypercritical posts about other skaters out of this Mirai Cheer thread? I know we might be upset that Mirai didn't do as well as they hoped but there is no reason to drag on the rest of the skaters.

I suspect Mirai lost a good two to three points on her overall PCS marks with the fall. She probably would've had about a 33 maybe 34 on her PCS had she hit the 3A (keeping in mind that she had a 64 in PCS in the team event LP and I think the judges prefer her LP). I think because she stalks the 3A, if there isn't a big payoff, the stalking becomes that much more noticable in the eyes of the judges and affects the PCS, I suspect they're more forgiving if it's landed (plus audience reaction, etc.).

With the free still to go....conventional wisdom always had 2 out of 3 of the US ladies appearing in the Top 10 as a realistic and optimistic result, which seems poised to happen. I'm proud of Bradie and Mirai for skating CLEANLY(!) in their portions of the team event when the pressure was on to get the US a medal, they really did the absolute best that they could have done in the team portion, considering the field. That was always going to be their most realistic shot at a medal anyways. I think that everyone was shook by what happened to Nathan, and they all stepped up to the plate and did their part.

And even if the next axel attempt does not go well and Mirai beats herself up over it in the long, I'm glad that she got her moment in the spotlight and that the non-skating world still seemed to "get" what a big deal the triple axel was (though I did laugh when I read one article that said "many have tried, many have failed", because that's still not an accurate depiction...it's such a unicorn of a jump that not that many have TRIED-except maybe in their rinks on a harness-because it's that difficult and risky for women to train and nearly impossible to learn). Regardless of how the free goes, Mirai's agent needs to WORK and get her a commercial or something after the Olympics with her doing the triple axel in it. I'll be the most bitter if she doesn't' get a new sponsor or two after this, considering the number that her contemporaries have gotten over the years.

also: It's pretty hilarious that Mirai timed her triple axel to peak the year that a movie about Tonya Harding came out! Hahahaha. I think it would interfere with training for worlds (even though I remember Adam and Ashley attending the Oscars in 2014), but I do feel like Mirai and Adam need to be invited to the Oscars to sit with the I, Tonya gang.

second edit: When you consider the sp placement of the grand prix final silver medalist for this season (Maria-who will also be making a move for the top 10/make things difficult for the US ladies), it really demonstrates the dept of the field. Outside of Dabin Choi-who I still think should have had her toe marked with an under-the US ladies were up against the reigning world champion, the reigning grand prix final and European champion, reigning silver and bronze world medalists, former world silver medalist, reigning bronze Olympic medalist, reigning 4CC champion...am I forgetting anyone?

Well I posted the picture of all the cranes on twitter. Man that was embarrassing. But if she happens to see it and it cheers her up, it's worth it.
I tried to find it but couldn't. I hope she sees it! I'm sure she would love it.

I was hoping you would post the link. :) That's so amazing and wonderful! Beautiful job! If you tagged her, she'll see it, though possibly not until after the FS. Seems like she is wisely avoiding SM today, for the most part. Other than a little Instagram story about dogs.

I guessed she would. I don't mind. Although I realized somethibg awful today before the photo. I counted and I only had 996! :duh:

I should've counted before I stopped folding.

Generally, I am flummoxed by the US performance in both men's and women's singles.

I think Mirai's strategy generally worked in that I think she did better with a 3A fall than a 2A.

I hope Mirai does well for herself in LP. I generally do not like the idea that a skater feels they have to "redeem" themselves, so I just hope Mirai can be happy. I am glad she has a medal.

I have never read anything about her that suggests she is the type to count hundreds of tiny pieces of origami to make sure a gift is absolutely and infallibly perfect. :D

It's a symbolic thing. 1000 cranes for a wish. I didn't complete it... so bad on me.

That's ok. If you don't tell her, she'll never know.

Mirai's practice today was a bit worrisome too Only 2 3A attempts, fell on one that was also UR.

Falls on 3A’s can be painful! I suspect Tom is limiting her to make sure she doesn’t injure herself. If they are not working today there is no point continuing to jump and fall. She just needs to trust her training. All the work was done long before she got to Korea - this is just keeping the feel going. Tom and Mirai have a plan; they just need to stick to it.

Since a medal is a long shot, I wonder if Mirai can go for two 3As?

She'd have to change her jump layout and set up. And she'd have to do one in combination. I think it's more likely to see her do a double axel. She looks gutted in those interviews. :( I think she's probably emotionally exhausted. Vonn had a similar reaction yesterday after she skied. I do hope Mirai goes for the triple axel because I think she'll regret it if she doesn't. Even if she falls and even if it results in a lower placement, I want to see her do it.
