Mass Shooting at LGBT Nightclub in Orlando

Congress actually voted down a bill that would have banned suspected terrorists (i.e. those on the 'no fly' list) from buying guns. I doubt it will change. That vote came one day after San Bernardino. The gun lobby is heavily invested in no regulation of guns whatsoever for any reason.

That is distressing. We really do have bunch of knuckleheads in congress and if you
Look in the dictionary under assholes, there is a picture of the gun lobby.....

Sad thing is, like in the aftermath of every similar tragedy, nothing will be done to prevent - even to a small extent- mass shootings.

I want to throw up when I visit my basketball website because the tragedy becomes politicized immediately by those who are so concerned about losing their guns and who also fear immigration (even though the killer is American.) It's ugly because the victims are like tennis balls being lobbed back and forth to make political points.

And then I just saw a Reuters headline that said Trump said Obama is linked to the massacre. What is wrong with people?

people can be put on the no-fly list because of suspected terrorist connections, but those same people can buy guns.
Was the Orlando shooter on the no-fly list? I thought he was investigated twice, but never on the list.

"Terror or hate crime?" - Why does it have to be either/or? It was both- terrorism and hate crime.

This is what I hate about classification and all of the political bs that follows. Whether it is Sandy Hook or Charleston or Orlando---it is always the same for me....innocents dying by someone firing guns....all of the other details are lost for me. If the killers could not get their hands on weapons they would have a harder time trying to kill so many with a blade.

Orlando Gunman Had Been Taken Off Watch List, FBI Director Comey Says: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...-taken-off-watch-list-fbi-director-comey-says
Excerpts:
Citing a briefing with Comey, NPR's Carrie Johnson reports, "Mateen was on a watch list when the first investigation of him by the FBI began in May 2013, and taken off of the list when the investigation was closed March 2014."
Carrie adds, "The FBI gets notification when people on the watch list try to buy weapons."
The FBI director also filled in more details about the events of the early hours of Sunday morning. The first shots were reported around 2 a.m. – and Comey said that beginning around 2:30, the gunman made or received three calls with the local 911 service. In one, the gunman called and hung up. In the second, he called and spoke to the operator only briefly. But in the third, in which the operator called the gunman back, Mateen apparently spoke more fully.
That call, Comey said, introduced conflicting information to the investigation, as Mateen claimed to be pledged to ISIS — but he also said he was inspired by the bombers who attacked the Boston Marathon (and who did not affiliate themselves with ISIS), as well as a Florida man who carried out a suicide bombing for the Al-Nusrah Front in Syria – a rebel group that has frequently clashed with ISIS.

I don't think that he was on the "no fly" list (eta: Sylvia's post confirms this), but he is dead now, so it's moot. Trying something that might help (even just a bit) in the future, Democrats in the Senate are reintroducing the legislation that failed to pass last winter that would prevent those on terror watch lists from legally buying firearms or explosives. While this wouldn't have prevented Omar Mateen from obtaining his guns, it just might prevent/make it more difficult for some others with similar murderous intent going forward.

^^^ Thanks - this GoFundMe is "the official Pulse Victims Fund page for Equality Florida, the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization."

#OrlandoUnited: How to Donate to Help Victims of the Orlando Nightclub Shooting:
http://time.com/money/4365694/orlando-pulse-nightclub-shooting-how-to-help/
In this case, Equality Florida has pledged to use 100% of the money donated to help victims and their families. Charity Navigator had not previously rated Equality Florida but today gave it a three (out of four) grade. GuideStar, meanwhile, gives Equality Florida it’s highest “gold” rating.
Still, Equality Florida is a relatively small organization, and the money raised already far exceeds the group’s initial goal, so some may be looking for other organizations that can make effective use of their donations. Here’s a list of top-rated LGBT non-profits from Charity Navigator. The National Center for Victims of Crime, which is working with Equality Florida, gets a “gold” rating on Guidestar.
ETA: For those who have access to PI, there is a "Reactions to the massacre in Orlando" thread there and I personally am hoping that any future Trump/Clinton/Obama/election-related posts will end up in PI rather than in here.

The organizations overseeing the Pulse "GoFundMe" page, say that they are sure that the victims will need long-term support of all kinds.
Bless those who are continuing to help.

Trump has been spouting venom against Obama for many years and Trump has jumped on the opportunity to smear Obama again. Sadly there are people that believe him even though Obama has spent nearly 8 years fighting terrorism. Why no condemnation from the democratic/republican party leaders? Trump is a fearmongerer, and a hater. He seems to have intense hatred for Obama. yet he says "I am the least racist person"- yeah, right!

I posted in another thread (or was it this one) that a former republican strategist is concerned that Trump has access to classified information. This is as dangerous as it can get.

Well, Trump did just go on national TV and say the killer "was born in Afghanistan". His supporters believe what he says. Facts be damned.

Trump must have gone "off script" if he really said that, because this is what his transcript says:
The bottom line is that the only reason the killer was in America in the first place was because we allowed his family to come here. That is a fact, and it's a fact we need to talk about.
There is a thread in PI about reaction to the Orlando shooting where I have been posting stuff like this, after thinking that my previous post about the gun legislation probably didn't belong here.

Lies lies..... someone needs to call him on that. Are our media doing their job? I know that even if they did, Trump supporters are going to say the media are against him.

Who cares what his supporters say? They won't listen one way or another but someone needs to call him out on his lies and they need to splash it all over the country so that he doesn't get any new supporters.

I am just so not convinced that other people with guns helps this.
Let's say I have a gun (and if I do, surely everyone does...). I hear gun shots ring out, see a guy shooting, and because I'm now expected to respond (sure hope I have training that is going to make certain I don't misfire and take bystanders down because I'm freaked out) so I take my gun out and shoot the guy with a gun. Oh wait, he was doing what I did too- he wasn't the original shooter. Hopefully no one else has a gun and shoots me, not realizing the first shots didn't come from me and I was "helping". How do we determine who is the bad guy if everyone has a gun out shooting?

I don't recall things working out real great in gun fights in the "Wild West" (where bullets flew at much slower rates) and that seems to be what is being proposed.

Not to mention it was a nightclub. Add some guns to a crowded, dimly lit, loud environment filled with drunk people. What could possibly go wrong :wall::wall::wall:

Thanks for posting these links, Sylvia. There are many more names and photos now than earlier today. Most were so young and it it heartbreaking to read about them. :fragile: I could only get through a few at a time and can't imagine what their families are going through. May they all RIP.

ETA: During the wall-to-wall network coverage yesterday I wanted to throw something at my TV when they kept showing the killer in what seemed a gallery of selfies. One photo (the one that looked most like a mug shot) would have been more than enough for me. At one time even the anchor guy had had enough and said "please switch from him to something (I can't remember what it was, but clearly he had had enough of his face) .

I guess we're all just...expendable. Gee thanks...Congress!

Who cares about age? The fact that they died at all is bad enough, whether the victims were 20 or 50.
