Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Me a fanatic?! Just because I’ve seen most MCU movies several times?! hehehe :slinkaway
I've only watched them twice. Once when they came out (except The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton which I skipped because I wasn't a fan of that character) and then later in timeline order right before End Game.

I may do that again right before Doomsday.

Rotten Tomatoes - Project Hail Mary

I’m getting excited - I’ll be seeing this tonight in IMAX. 😃

Well, I did see Project Hail Mary last night. Being that we are still in its opening weekend, I’ll put my review in spoiler.

Are you a science fiction comedy fan? Do you love Ryan Gosling’s work? Did you like The Martian (novel is also by Andy Weir)? Then you’ll like this film!

If, however, you are bothered by watching multiple flashbacks, you may not like this film.

I give this film an 8.7/10. I thought that the cinematography, visual effects, sound, and editing were superb. And few can perform comedy in serious situations like Ryan Gosling can.

One nickpick - and it’s a big deal enough for me that I can’t rate this film 9.0+ like what’s in Rotten Tomatoes right now - is while the friendship between Dr. Grace and Rocky is superbly done 🥺, the film could have done a much better job of explaining how Dr. Grace didn’t have any friends on Earth. And he’s chosen to stay with Rocky on his new planet because he has friends there. The novel does a much better job of explaining this. The film just shows Dr. Grace……just staying where he is for now.

Holy Days

I'm always up for a quirky rom-com. Years ago I loved discovering "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist." This preview, set in Manchester, has that same sort of feel. Finding Emily

This . . . doesn't look good, and I really like the live action The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

Also, the first Moana film is still fairly new.

I just can’t get over how bad that wig is. And Dwayne Johnson likely filmed all (or most of) his scenes on a soundstage. No one noticed this? 🤭

I saw Call Me By Your Name tonight. I thought it was generally well done and Timothee Chalamet was great, but I wasn't feeling the chemistry between Timmy and Armie Hammer at all.

Sick day movie marathon continues: I saw Conclave tonight after watching Anora.

I actually ... did not like this. I feel like it depended so heavily on the final twist. I felt like the way the characters spoke was so artificial and artful. And everyone was just a plot device. There were no real round characters for me to follow.

Ralph Fiennes was wonderful as usual, but other than the big twists, was there anything really interesting about this movie or the various cardinals? If I were a voter I would have voted Anora over Conclave. Know that's not popular but ...

I am on the other side. I thought Anora depended on the final twist. Its first half was so boring that I considered walking out (not because of sex scenes). Then it started moving and generated some interest.

Conclave OTOH kept me interested throughout. I saw it twice and I saw finer points in it. The subject sounded dry but the movie was very interesting.

I guess we have different tastes.

Based on a conversation on facebook I am considering two old movies of Kevin Bacon.

Footloose
Diner

I read that before Footloose he was not famous. If it’s a musical I may not enjoy it. I may watch Diner if it’s available on YouTube.

I found a copy of Diner but it had Spanish subtitles which were distracting, so I stopped after 2 minutes.

I am not a comedy fan.
Science fiction- only some movies
I like Ryan Gosling
I liked the movie Martian, except for the last scene.
Multiple flashbacks - they worked in some movies; not in others

Where does that leave me?

I won’t rush to see this.

I want to see Sentimental Values and may be Hamnet. Not really in the mood for movies right now. I have jet lag. I may fall asleep if I go to a theater.

People say it's a musical, but no one bursts into song. It's all needle drops and dancing to music. The soundtrack lists musical artists and not the cast.

Now it's been made into a musical. But so has Ghost. Which is definitely not a musical.

That said, I think Diner is a better movie.
