Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Yesterday, I saw Caught Stealing in theaters. Being that we're still in its opening holiday weekend, I'll put my review in spoiler.

Are you a fan dark comedies with lots of violence and gore? Are you a fan of Darren Aronofsky's films? Are you a fan of Austin Butler? Do you like the idea of a major supporting character being.....a cat? :cat: Then you will want to watch this film!

I give this film an 8.0/10. The plot is a bit slow (it took about 45 minutes to an hour to begin to comprehend the story) but the quality of the actors make up for the shortcomings in the script.

It's 1998. Hank (Austin Butler) is a bartender in NYC and he struggles with memories with a car crash that killed his friend and ended his promising baseball career. Russ (Matt Smith), a British punk rock neighbor, is visiting the UK and asks him to watch his cat Bud (Tonic the Cat). While looking for Russ, who was supposed to have returned to pick up Bud, Hank gets caught up in Russ' drug dealing operation involving Russian mobsters, Hasidic crime bosses, and a corrupt NYPD detective (Regina King). Hank has to find a way to get out of this situation alive.

What's good/great:
1) Tonic the Cat. EVERYTHING he did was FABLULOUS! 😻
2) It appears that Austin Butler did all (or at least most) of his stunts. Which got INSANE.

What's MEH:
1) The use of the San Francisco Giants as a plot device just got boring after awhile.
2) I didn't like that it took so long to understand the ENTIRE situation that Hank found himself in.
3) As awesome as Tonic 😸 was, I don't think a cat should have the most coherent parts of the script.

Finished Materialists. Loved it! Celine Song is soooo good at creating intimacy. She is the first director to have two films in my beloved movies list of this decade.

I saw this film today and really enjoyed it. The cat was great. I also thought Austin Butler was excellent (have become a bit of a fan) and him and Zoe Kravatz's on screen chemistry was amazing.

Box Office Mojo - U.S. Domestic Box Office: Weekend 36

So….is The Conjuring: Last Rites any good? Is it a “slasher” horror film?

Also, I’m seeing posts on all the various movie Reddits advising to NOT go see the Hamilton re-release in theaters unless you want to deal with it being a “sing-a-long”. If that’s the case, I’ll PASS. 😒

Notable opening next week: The Long Walk, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Toy Story (30th Anniversary Re-release), and The Sound of Music (60th Anniversary Re-release).

I didn't really like the Conjuring. It was ok not great, not horrible.

Excited to see the Long Walk this week

We have the award winners from the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival! 🇨🇦 😊

I’m noticing a lot of chatter that Hamnet is AMAZING. 🤔

I’m relieved that Frankenstein and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery are apparently quite good. I’m rereading Frankenstein right now and am looking forward to both movies coming out on Netflix. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to see either when they have their limited 🇺🇸 theatrical release.

It looks like the international film race will be between No Other Choice 🇰🇷 and Sentimental Value 🇳🇴. 🤔

I finally got to see both Superman and Elio. I like Superman a lot but I loved Elio!

Superman: it's a good movie. A fun time. And it didn't rehash all the things we already know about his origin, which I think is great and helped make the movie better. The story was interesting too. It is long but I only noticed it when I took a phone call and said I would call about in "about 20 minutes" based on where we were in the story and found that there was at least 30 minutes more. So it moves.

There was only one thing I didn't like. In the beginning of the movie (as shown in the trailers), Lois queries Superman about whether or not to interfere in a conflict between two countries was a good idea. And the movie doesn't really answer that. In the end, it's all Lex Luther's fault (spoiler? I mean we all know he's a villian going in) and Clark shows no sign of having learned anything about not interfering the politics of countries without consulting with some authority first.

Now Elio:
Loved, loved this movie. It's fun. Anyone who has ever felt alienated from where they live and their family or lost parents when young or had to give up dreams for family, will be able to relate to the main characters. The aliens are adorable, Elio is adorable, his friendship with an alien boy is adorable. The visuals are adorable. The story is great and has a great ending where everyone learns something and grows but not in a corny way. I'd put it up there with Toy Story for being a great movie. I can't believe Disney didn't market it much at all and basically buried it. I hope it gets a second life on streaming.

Now I want to see this. Thank you!

After the Hunt - Official Trailer #2

I’m hoping to like this, especially with Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny.

And…….it’s Luca Guadagnino. Which means it’s either going to be great or another movie he’s going to need an intervention for. 🤔
Reviews out of the Venice film festival aren't great

Also, coming home from Spain I watch the movie juror number two if anyone has seen that can you explain the ending to me when Toni Collette shows up at his door and they just kind of stare at each other, what was that all about? I mean I know that she knew he was involved, but I didn’t understand the ending.

:cheer2:

ETA:
It’s the Mandalorian and Grogu trailer!
