Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

"Black Bag" isn't playing at our local theater. I'm completely bummed. The closest theater where it's showing this weekend is 45 minutes away. :(

I finally got around to watching September 5 which is now streaming on Paramount. It is an interesting movie focusing on the roots of live news coverage in a crisis. A lot to think about.

I know this might be a long way off. When it comes time for streaming, I believe we'll see it on Peacock because the movie comes from Focus Features, and it's owned by Universal and Comcast.

Since I can no longer go the movie theatres, streaming is what I have to rely on, but it's worth it to me since I eventually get to see the movies.

"The Electric State" is being savaged by the critics. You know what? I liked it. I wanted a good popcorn movie and that is what this is imho. Also I enjoyed the variety of robot designs in this film.

As we enter this dark chapter in our country's history I do wonder if we will be seeing more dystopian films. Here is Nicole Kidman's latest called "Holland":

And here is Elizabeth Olsen and Alicia Vikander in "The Assessment":

I think movie theaters are suffering because it costs $18 for a matinee here. Maybe all the overpaid in Hollywood need to start taking paycuts to make it cheaper to get movies to theaters. I'm sure they will somehow manage to live on even half of their double digit contracts.

Agreed. A regular 2D ticket shouldn’t cost more than $15. IMHO, I think the concessions prices are more ridiculous. cough My purse is very handy. cough 👜 🥤 🍫 🥪 🍿 😉

I think the problem is the distributers and theaters, not so much the movie budget itself. As examples, Anora was made with $15M, The Brutalist was $9.6M, and A Complete Unknown was made for $25M.

Just watched September 5. It was very well done and held my interest all the way through. I was too young in '72 to have known about the Olympic terrorism in Munich, so didn't fully know how the story would progress. The pacing of the movie reminded me a bit of "Good Night and Good Luck". A nice behind-the-scenes look.

Anora is now available on Hulu along with A Real Pain. Dune: Part Two has been available at Netflix for awhile now. I think almost all of the other Oscar nominated films are available to rent on Amazon Prime.

We watched September 5. It was eerie for us: I saw it live on ABC as a 16-year-old and DH has seen the live footage many times growing up in Israel. Really well done, it captured how hard to was to cover live news in the days before computers and portable cameras. Strongly recommend.

I saw an interesting analysis that says that it's impossible to make a good movie of Snow White if you make Snow White the main character because she's so passive in the story and has no real story arc (i.e., she doesn't change or grow). It mentioned the Disney cartoon version concentrated a lot on the Queen and the Dwarfs and that's what made it work.

I hate that story precisely because Snow White is so passive so I found it pretty believable.

The online hatefulness directed at Snow White and its star Rachel Zegler is really sad to see. I hope families with little kids will support the film this weekend. The new song "Waiting On A Wish" is very catchy, if a bit too familiar; Zegler has a great voice and sings the heck out of it.

I went to The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie today and had the best time. It's so much fun and everything I could have wanted from a theatrical Looney Tunes movie. I also really love 2D line drawn animation which made it even better for me. I really hope Ketchup, the company that rescued this from Warner Bros. when they got rid of it, is able to rescue Coyote vs. ACME too. There's rumours they're in talks to.

I watched about 45 minutes of this on the weekend and switched off. Didn't have enough to keep me wanting to see what happened next.

Thanks @ilovepaydays for the Freakier Friday trailer (I am a bit behind on this thread). The first movie was a hoot. Hoping this will be just as enjoyable.

Tried to watch Anora this weekend. I hit the pause button roughly after they got back from Vegas and found out we were only 40 minutes into the movie with another 1.5h to go - just couldn't do it so had to turn it off. Let me know if there is any reason to watch the rest of it.

Finally got around to Anatomy of a Fall. Fantastic film! Extremely well acted (the kitchen scene!) and the dog does not disappoint. 2023 was a good year for movies even though Barbie was only okay and Oppenheimer was zzzzz.

"Anatomy of a fall" was one of my Oscar favorites. Excellent film.

@jadingirl I watched all of "Anora" and can't recommend further viewing. It does become a bit more interesting in the second half, but overall as a movie I was disappointed. I'm sure others here have more favorable views though.
