Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Watched the trailer of the latest MissionImpossible. Could be the final chapter. I am not a fan of MI movies but I am tempted to see this one.
 
Good news for me- Brutalist is coming to a theater near me.So I won’t have to drive to Scottsdale to see it.

The irony is that i will be in Scottsdale all of next week for a workshop.

I feel like Anora is one of those movies that is hit or miss for a lot of people. I’ve wondered how many people are ? that the movie involves a spoiled brat from a family of Russian oligarchs.

I still think that the ~20 minute fight scene between Ani and those handlers was fun to watch. I’m wondering if that was really done in one take. ? ?
 
Just came home from "The Brutalist". In what world is it OK to have 4 previews in a movie that's 3 1/2 hours long?? (and none of them looked entertaining). The movie was very well done, and held my interest throughout, even though it was uncomfortable to watch at times. I could see it getting best picture and best actor at the Oscars easily, as well as some other awards. Brody was amazing, and Felicity Jones was very good as well. Guy Pearce was a revelation to me, as I don't think I've seen him in anything before.

Guy Pearce has done A LOT of work that you’ve probably seen, but his career has been a lot like J.K. Simmons in that his supporting roles haven’t been considered awards worthy until The Brutalist (or Whiplash, in Simmons case).

I saw The Brutalist at a theater near me. It was an early afternoon start, and it ended around 4:30 PM. I was prepared for that…... First I was the only one in the theater. Later there were five of us. They showed 20 minutes of previews! The movie is 3 hours 45 minutes long! Why couldn’t the theater cut down on the previews? Do they have contracts with the studios?

I felt that The Brutalist deserved the three top Golden globe wins. It is an epic.

Adrien Brody was phenomenal. Such depth in his portrayal of such a complex character! He deserves the best actor Oscar, though it doesn’t mean he will get it. It’s the Oscars Afterall. Going OT- I was shocked to see the nominees for Best Director, and even more so for cinematography (no Conclave? In what world?)- back on the Brutalist.

Did Brody have Hungarian grand parents? In his GG acceptance speech he said something like his grandparents had emigrated to the USA. Were they Hungarian? I am going to look up Wikipedia for his ancestry.

I liked the fact that the Hungarian characters in the movie spoke a lot of Hungarian.

The cinematography was wonderful. Should win the Oscar, but will it? Conclave cinematography could have challenged it.

The direction was superb. Brutalist is a period piece that begins in 1947 and spans many years.

Guy Pearce was very convincing as rich guy Van Buren. I kept thinking that in that role he resembled my Tae Kwon Do teacher in my graduate school days. Later that feeling disappeared because he did such a good job of portraying the character! I don’t think he will win the Oscar though. Neither will Felicity Jones, although she was also very good. There are strong front runners in the Supporting categories.

The Brutalist is the best movie I have seen this year. I would have liked it to be slightly shorter in the second half. The first half totally grabbed me; the second just a bit less so. I was confused about a scene toward the end, but I will need to put it in a spoiler, so may be later.

The story of Laszlo Toth is told lije a book, with sections ir chapters.

I liked the ‘epilogue’. Without it, the movie would have felt unfinished.

Funny thing is last night I had spent a lot of time posting my photos of Budapest on my photo site, and 12 hours later I saw that city mentioned many times.

I read the story of seed of…. And decided not to watch it. The kind of crime involved is something that I would rather not watch.
 
I have three more of the Best Picture nominees to see. Dune 2 is streaming on Netflix, but unfortunately there is no way right now to watch "I"m still here" or "Nickel Boys". Neither is in a theater within 50 miles of me.
 
We have a long weekend here in Australia so have been relaxing a bit and watching some movies.

Heretic - This was so good. I had been wanting to see it because I have really been enjoying Hugh Grant over the last few years and he absolutely didn't disappoint. He is so freaking good in this. And the two girls in it were excellent too. I am not a horror movie fan and at the end of it I didn't think there was a lot of horror. But it did create a creepy narrative and story that kept you on your edge. But also the screenplay was excellent. As an atheist I love seeing questions about religion and this really got me in. It was such an intelligent movie and sucked me in.

Conclave - Excellent movie. So well directed with incredible attention to detail. Great story and it really drew me into this world and the politics of the voting of the new pope.

Wallace and Gromit: Vengence Most Fowl - I had heard there was a new W&G film and it is on Netflix. I had seen W&G from their very first film and this new one is a sequel to The Wrong Trousers. It was lovely and had some really funny moments.
 
I tried watching “Dune 2” today. Like, really tried. But sci-fi is so not my thing. I gave up after about 45 minutes. I hope it got better after that.

I am not into Sci fi movies either. I am not going to watch it.
 
Just saw The Brutalist in a theatre full of 55+ folks. Though I was familiar with the basic plot, I was surprised at how bizzare it was. I loved the first quarter of the film, lost a little interest just before intermission, and I was scratching my head throughout the second half. I felt there were holes in the story. Brody was great. Didn’t care that much for Pearce but that was probably the character.

Btw if anyone is near Doylestown, there’s actually a famous “castle” there made of concrete, including the furniture. Built by Henry Mercer, it’s open for tours and is quite interesting.
