They are redoing Mean Girls as a musical. Tim Meadows and Tina Fey are repeating their roles. So it's based on the musical which is based on the the original movie.

The Marvels - I absolutely LOVED this movie! It was so much fun! It is on the level of the first Captain America movie but of course with a lot of Flerkens! And Goose is a girl! There is a mid credit scene that you will definitely want to stay for! :cheer2:

"Us Kids" has an 85% approval rating at rotten tomatoes and was a Grand Jury Prize nominee at the Sundance Film Festival for best documentary. The movie is about a group of teens who travel the country speaking out about gun violence. And they are survivors of the mass shooting at the high school in Parkland, Floriada. I thought this movie was very well made, it's such a sensitive topic that it seems like it could be easy to go wrong in many ways (as far as putting this together). Director Kim A. Snyder does such a good job. While we see these kids in some very serious moments, there's also lightness shown in how these students in their late teens still like to play around like kids at times. Snyder captures so many great moments in the kids' work to make the lives of other children safer. I found this documentary captivating from start to finish with kleenex needed at times and a smile brought to my face at other times.

Quiz Lady on Hulu is a cute feel good movie. Sandra Oh and Awkwafina play sisters who have to pay off their mother's gambling debts. It's based on the comedy buddy movie trope but with sisters and it is one of the most fun buddy movies I've watched. Sandra Oh is amazing and I've never seen her in a role like this. She's hilarious and has great comedy timing. Awkwafina is still Awkwafina for the most part but she has some good moments showcasing her character's social anxiety to play off of Sandra Oh's bigger than life character.

Definitely worth watching.

Some movie posts I'm borrowing from the television thread. :)

We just got back from watching The Marvels. I loved it. It's not a great movie but it's lots of fun and I adore Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan/Iman Vellani and the whole Khan family. You do have to turn your brain off, especially with how space works.

Also, I wasn't a big fan of Captain Marvel, but I found her a lot more likable here. Monica Rambeau, OTOH, just seemed off compared to how she was in Wandavision.

OUCH… The movie is better than these numbers indicate.

The Marvels cost either 220 million or 280 to make. Double that to cover advertising/promotion to make a profit. Wikipedia says that the movie has made 114 million at this time. :fragile: :fragile: :fragile: I wish they had introduced new female characters along with some established male characters before putting them into their own movie. Studios know that reaction to female lead characters in action/sci-fi/superhero movies is dicey. Set women up to succeed! Ugh.

Studios hold back movies in order to make a profit. They did that with James Bond and Tom Cruise's movies. But Marvel not only put Black Widow into theatres when people still had pandemic fears, but also put Black Widow on the Disney + streaming service at the same time. Surely they could have kept the movie from steaming for a month or two to maximize profit? My final point? Marvel sucks. Treat women better.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is plenty of time for the movie to make more money. People whined about The Elementals being a bomb but it ended up making half a billion dollars at this point. These days, opening weekend isn't the entire story.

Paint," featuring Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, is a pleasant and easy-going comedy. Set in Vermont, Carl, a public TV painter known for his calm demeanor and signature curly hair, faces unexpected competition from a younger, more modern artist. This twist brings humor and a bit of drama to the story. Wilson's performance is a highlight, perfectly capturing the essence of a once-comfortable artist now out of his element. The movie offers a good mix of laughs and lighthearted storytelling, making it a great choice for a laid-back, enjoyable movie night.

Has anyone seen Saltburn? Saw it on the weekend.

British film which has Richard E Grant, Rosamund Pike and Carey Mulligan and the rest of the cast is not as well known. But the performances are very good and I thought it was very well cast.

Story is quite unpredictable. It felt a bit like a modern Brideshead Revisited set in the mid-2000s to start with but certainly takes a dark turn. There are some unsettling moments and it is definitely designed to make the audience feel uncomfortable. I really liked it and went along with the journey.

my friend saw it in Century City last weekend. He said he liked it. I don’t think it’s out though nationally correct?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - Trailer 2 is now out.

I’ll admit it: Aquaman isn’t one of my favorite DC Comics characters. But this looks great! Also - Jason Momoa playing a DAD = 😊.

I’ll see this next month - after I see Napoleon and then Wonka! 😁
I saw the poster and said I have to see it. Lurves me some Jason Momoa.

A friend of mine who is a published author generated a picture of two of her male characters from one of her books. Used Jason Momoa as an inspiration. OMG I :swoon:

"Evil Dead Rise" ramps up the horror with its intense, gory scenes, including a standout moment with a cheese grater and tons of blood. Set in a spooky LA apartment, it really grips you after the initial buildup. Filled with jumpscares and suspense, the acting and special effects make it even more thrilling. It's a solid pick for horror enthusiasts, but if you're someone who likes peaceful sleep at night, you might want to think twice before watching it!

Spinning Gold is an okay drama about Neil Boart, founder of Casablanca Records. If you're around my age, you will remember their label on records by artists such as Donna Summer, Kiss, Parliament, the Village People, etc. The story of Bogart and all the artists on Casablanca is better than how it is told here. But the story is so good, watching this movie wasn't a complete waste of time. Certainly shows how a person with a lot of drive and bravado can make anything happen. Some of the casting choices are confusing, such as the wispy actor (in the vein of Timothy Chalamet) cast to play Gene Simmons. Jason Derulo fares much better as Ron Isley of the Isley Brothers, but his part is small. Same with Ledisi as Gladys Knight.

“Prey” directed by Dan Trachtenberg was quite the thrill ride especially if you’re a fan of the Predator franchise. I was intensely glued to the action right from the get-go.

I was particularly struck by the film’s authentic depiction of the Indigenous tribe, particularly through the portrayal of a young woman’s determination to establish herself as a skilled hunter.

With the predator wreaking havoc and terror to anyone that it deemed to be a threat, the young Indigenous woman’s courage and bravery was a standout element of the film.

Despite the trail of destruction wrought by the formidable Predator, the film concludes on a positive note, leaving me eagerly anticipating any future installments in this thrilling franchise.

Saw The Holdovers yesterday, a holiday-themed movie about a northeastern boarding-school student forced to spend the Christmas holidays on campus with an unpopular teacher, played by Paul Giamatti. The story takes place in the early '70s and you very much get the feeling that it was filmed during that era. It's full of imperfect characters who don't try very hard to be anything else. It was apparently filmed entirely in Massachusetts on the campuses of several prep schools, and has that dreary feeling that makes you want to be anywhere else. My husband and I enjoyed it. It wouldn't surprise me if Da'Vine Joy Randolph receives a nom for her role as the cook.

Has anyone seen Pedro Almodóvar’s gay gunslinger movie “strange way of life“ with Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke?

It’s only a 30 minute short and he did not make it a full length feature because he was afraid to do it all in English, it went to cannes film festival and had strong word of mouth, but I don’t think the USA has this. I’m trying to locate a screener here in Hollywood from my friends at the studios.

in watching a lot of YouTube videos recently I learned the Pedro A was the original Director for Brokeback Mountain, but he wanted the sex scenes to be actual you know realistic. He said these men went years without seeing each other, and that when they see each other, they were going to really go at it, but the studio told him no, when the studio told him no, he withdrew himself from Director.

It’s supposed to be really good and I want to see this

That is interesting about Brokeback Mountain.

The last Almodovar movie I saw was Pain and Glory. It was so good.

He has always been one of my favourite directors.

I saw Journey to Bethlehem on the weekend.

Think Nativity cross Disney cute.

It’s a pleasant enough way to pass some time. Likely to find its success in the future as good background tv for the lead up to Christmas for kids.

It occurred to me while I was watching it that doing a cute version of the Nativity is actually quite hard. I think to understand the gravity of the story, viewers do need a decent understanding of concepts of conception, sex, pregnancy, adultery, the way women were executed for adultery, massacres and the savagery of those times. And obviously those themes aren’t going to work well in something designed for kids! So it felt like big chunks of the narrative were missing.

I am kind of not getting the Pedro Pascal love. I think I got turned off him from the last Wonder Woman movie. But I did enjoy him in the movie with Nicholas Cage The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. I always enjoy Nick Cage not taking himself seriously.

Well, he played a Super-Villain in that movie so the fact that you don't like him means he did a good job, right? :D
