Thought I’d share Maia Shibutani’s posts on the movies she’s been watching while recovering from surgery:

Some of my fave movies are on there and I’m ecstatic she has my favorite film of all time, Yi Yi, and my fave movie of this past decade, Frances Ha, on the list. She’s even working on her video editing skills as evidenced in her story and I love that she included a scene from Yi Yi and at the end showed Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York throwing a knife at a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and edited a scene of Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln laughing in response.

Also glad to see Late Spring, Persona, and Being John Malkovich on the list among others. I wonder if she liked Frances Ha because she ended up watching a few more Noah Baumbach movies after it.

I personally liked Frozen I, but Frozen II, not so much. The songs did seem a bit forgettable to me. Although I liked how the plot resolved at the end of Frozen II. My girls seemed to enjoy both films.

We watched Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn last night. Somehow I missed this when it was released and was surprised at how much I liked it. Wish I could see it on the big screen.

This is on at my local cinema at the moment. I thought this would be interesting.

I saw Emma on the weekend. Really enjoyed it. I think Anya Taylor-Joy (who I had never heard of) was really good in the title role.

Emma is the only Jane Austen book I've never read, so watching the movie is the lazy person (i.e. mine)'s strategy to filling that hole in my knowledge! :) I never got around to the Gwyneth Paltrow version, so it's good to see the wheel coming round again.

We saw Portrait of a Lady on Fire last night & enjoyed it. As befits a movie about a painter, it's visually striking, in terms of the costumes and set design and cinematography. And it's an interesting story that makes you think. The pacing is a bit slow, but that is appropriate to the time period it's portraying and the story it's telling. I'd recommend it.

We watched Rocketman last night and I really enjoyed it. I am not the greatest Elton John fan and it can be hard to do a story about someone who is a real person and still alive but I think they did a good job. The direction was very whimsical, which fit the subject matter very well, IMO. And the music was fun.

My husband and I watched it a couple of nights ago and we both really enjoyed it. I agree about the whimsical direction. I had read some mixed reviews so I wasn’t sure about even watching it, but we both got totally sucked in. I do really love Taron Egerton though, and don’t know a ton about Elton John or his music which maybe helped.

Tonight we watched Frozen 2. My expectations weren’t super high, and I didn’t love the first one but it was a really fun couple of hours. I enjoyed it much more than the first one. Little mic loved it so I’m probably going to watch it a gazillion times now.

Today we went on a Disney Live Action Remake kick. There's a reason these movies weren't popular. Dumbo was actually pretty good though I didn't like how they took a sweet story and made it so dramatic and eventful.

Aladdin as pretty bad though. Or more meh than bad. They totally wasted Will Smith!

I loved Frozen II, especially the '80s music video in the middle of the movie. 😂

I watched it last night for the first time, and when it got that part, I was like "Wait, WHAT?" It was a pretty funny spoof, but it seemed so odd to make a spoof like that for a target audience that wasn't even born in the '80s!

Now I'm watching Lady and the Tramp. I am pretty sure I've seen at least half of it before. But I have no memory of watching it. Which says a lot about it.

Been trying to get Bloodshot tickets but the website’s payment page just comes up blank. Has the movie been delayed or is there a problem with the website itself?! I have no idea but I plan on showing up Thursday night at the cinema and see what happens.

ETA:
Finally got tickets!!! :cheer2:

I think Russian "La Dame de Monsoreau" series is a beautiful movie with brilliant actors. Now I see Youtube has all the episodes with subs.

If you'd like to see something like a trailer, maybe these short videos are not bad:

this is the first episode:
as for other episodes, I see Youtube shows the list of the episodes in order

I saw Emma last night. There were only six others in the theater.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy, Miranda Hart were all very good. I did not like this Mr. Knightley. I've seen the 2009 series so many times, this movie seemed rushed. The costumes were divine though.

Saw Dark Waters (at my local cinema yesterday). Really good. Again makes you realise how unethical the big chemical companies are. And because I work for a Zinc company I actually understand about some of the chemical stuff.

BTW - Studio Ghibli are putting movies on Netflix. Yeah!!!

We watched Maudie (2016) last night, a film about Maud Lewis, a folk artist from Nova Scotia. Sally Hawkins was exceptional in the role of Maud.

I saw that in the cinema when it was out. Started off slowly but by the end was very engaging. When I went to Halifax last year I visited her house in the gallery and they have a collection of her paintings. The house is tiny.

Yes, but they are charging more than I'd pay to see them in a movie theater. To see them in my own home. I think that's crazy.

I agree that the price is exorbitant for a rental. I suppose they have to make up for all the lost revenue from the theatrical release somehow, but honestly, I think I'm going to wait for the regular DVD/BluRay release. It's an interesting experiment though.

We are probably just about to close cinemas here. I did decide to go to the movies today. I love my local cinema so wanted to support them. It is a more arthouse cinema which show a wide variety of movies. Plus the staff are great. It was very quiet.

Anyway I saw The Current Wars. Interesting subject and the performances were very good.
