Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Went to see Jojo rabbit. Brilliant and original movie. Such an energy and an interesting witty take on brainwashing. I've loved Taika Waititi since we watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople and even though he's getting wider recognition and exposure since Thor, he managed to keep his own touch not comprising on his peculiar and very personal brand of humor. After Parasite, this is the second really great movie I've seen in a while. They are two brilliant directors with such a unique vision and inner world. They also both develop a very colorful and graphic universe. I still give the edge to the Korean film just because it bears such a current resonance with what the world is experiencing today.

Saw ‘Marriage Story ‘ in a local theatre. The start was really bad. Not a good screenplay at all.it did improve later. Scarlett Johansson was really good. I wouldn’t mind it if she won the Oscar but she will not. It will be between Rene Z and Saoirse I think.

Adam Driver was good but I would have given the nom to Christian Bale instead for Ford v Ferrari.

Why is Laura Dern winning every supporting actress award? She was good as a divorce attorney but there are better supporting performances this year. In fact she was better in Little Women. It would have made more sense to nominate her for that role.

I saw Birds of Prey last night and it's fantastic, just loads of fun. Absolutely the Harley Quinn movie Margot Robbie deserved. It is super violent though, it would fit very well with the Deadpool movies.

I really want to see this one. I love Margot Robbie the more I see her in every movie she does. She is so good.

I saw the trailer and decided not to see this movie.

I feel like @manhn and I are on the same wavelength because I also saw both The Farewell and Hustlers recently. I’m annoy The Farewell did not get more award love because it was so well done, moving, relatable and hilarious. Hustlers was way better than I expected, too.

Saw Ford vs Ferrari a while ago and while it was good, I didn’t think it was Oscar worthy good.

I saw 1917 tonight and thought it was beautifully shot and very well done. But also felt like something that bad been done before vs Parasite being so original, so I’m glad the latter won.

I haven't seen the movie, but when I read what it was about it reminded me of an Australian Movie - Gallipolli

And it's been a long time since I've seen it, but they were tasked to take a msg through enemy lines or something to that nature. It reminded me of the 1917 plot.

I loved it too. This was the role that first introduced me to Margot Robbie (in Batman v. Superman), and I think she excels in it.

I thought Harley Quinn's first outing was Suicide Squad? Or was she also in Batman V Superman as I haven't seen that one.

I got to see Birds of Prey last night and really enjoyed it. Margot Robbie was fantastic as usual. As a friend said you cannot take your eyes of her. She definitely has the IT factor. And Ewan McGregor was a surprise in a good way. Took me a while to figure out who it was.

And saw the trailer for the new Wonder Woman movie where they play a remix of New Order's Blue Monday.

Also over the last week caught up with Marriage Story on Netflix. Very good. Can see why both Scarlett and Adam Driver were nominated for Oscars. They were both really good. Didn't realise Julie Haggerty was in it? Still remember her from Flying High (Airport in the US). Anyway I liked her character very much.

I honestly think Antonio Banderas deserves it after watching both performances.
Finally watched Pain and Glory. A very moving, understated and personal movie from Almodovar with a stand out performance from Antonio Banderas who has been reviving his career in a brillant manner. I have rediscovered him recently and boy, like fine wine he's just getting better with age. His male counterpart played by Asier Etxeandia in the movie gives also one of the most moving performance I've seen in a while when he reenacts the short story written by Banderas character.
Beautifully crafted movie, tender, colorful (I want Banderas apartment, so vibrant and warm) infused with melancholia but never sinking into despair, never bringing you down.
I also think he should have won the Oscar. The joker is way too much in your face and even if Phoenix did a great job, it feels forced at times as if his performance was saying "look to which extent I can contort my body and make you all cringe". Basically like an acting exercise. That movie ran way too long anyway relying way too much on the main character. It lacks of balance the way The Dark Night didn't because facing The joker was Batman and Two-face to offer a much needed counterweight to his madness.

We saw Knives Out last night and it was a trip. Both fun and funny. Daniel Craig’s character was the highlight, but Ana de Armas was also a standout and the entire ensemble was very good.

If you like something like Clue, which we do, you’d probably like this.

I just recently saw Arrival (I know it's from 2016, but I don't keep current with many films these days). I was very moved by this work of art, especially at the end. What a beautiful film, and what a unique twist on the sci-fi/ aliens from outer space genre. :saint:

Canadian director, Denis Villenueve, and Amy Adams are par excellence, backed up by solid support from Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner. ♥

I saw Villenueve's Sicario, but nothing else from him as of yet. I was very impressed hearing in his own words his approach to making Arrival. The entire production crew is amazing, and the man who wrote the original story upon which the film is based, Ted Chiang, is some kind of genius physicist, creative writer!

The idea of telling a story using aspects of language, communication and the non-linear quality of time (which is what physics is all about), is quite intriguing. These elements are poignantly brought to life in how this very affecting story is told. And the filmmakers/actors/crew are able to do this with a bare minimum of special effects. Imagine that you know somewhat specifically what the future holds, but there's no way you can change how it unfolds...

Last night I watched the Miyazaki move My Neighbour Totoro last night. Another lovely Studio Ghibli movie. Very original story and beautifully animated.

The twinnies and I just came back from "Call of the wild". Really well-done, gorgeous cinematography, and mostly very good CGI (there were a few "oh reallly???" moments) The girls are 8 and loved it, with Emery wishing it had been longer. I think it was quite solid, especially for a movie geared towards kids. 8/10 from me.

Yes, Batman v Superman was the first movie in which Margot played Harley Quinn. It was only a small part of the movie, but she was definitely in it, along with Jared Leto as The Joker.

Saw Frozen 2. The message was good but I found the movie disjointed and the songs mostly forgettable.

I thought the first one had too many songs in addition to being forgettable (except for that one song we all know). I know Disney movies are musicals but they went way overboard putting in songs where none were needed. Is this one doing the same thing?

"The Invisible Man" with Elisabeth Moss is getting good reviews. Any opinions yet?
