Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Agreed. Just a great satire and I thought it balanced comedy, family drama, and social commentary with such ease. Thrilled for Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown!
I thought both were excellent. I would have liked to see some recognition for Leslie Uggams, I thought her performance was heartbreaking and lovely.

Shocked that May-December got a best writing nomination.

They basically just copied Mary Kay Latoureau and Vili Fualaau’s predatory sexually abusive relationship and didn’t even consult with Vili about it. :(
I don't think that's quite true. I remember when that relationship was in the headlines and the truly irresponsible way that some in the media handled it (forbidden romance and jailed for love and all that sort of BS). The movie went beyond that. It deals with what really happens in a case like this and the fallout from it, in a way that we don't see that often.

I can understand why Fualaau was upset. At the same time, I can see the filmmakers' point of view -- they felt they were using the case as a jumping-off point and telling their own story, not making a biopic. Maybe they should have at least reached out to him, I'm not sure, but in any case, I'm glad the film got made.

The story should have been made for sure but it’s irresponsible of the filmmakers to make a film so much like Vili’s and his children’s life and not consult or offer him compensation.

Julianne Moore is a dead ringer for Mary Kay Latourneau and the Joe character is clearly based on Vili. The two daughters even look like Vili’s daughters in real life.

And here are the nominees!

“I’m Just Ken” got booed when it was announced for Best Song. Nice. ?

So…..Godzilla Minus One ? WHY OH WHY was it not submitted for Japan for Best International Film?!

Godzilla Minus One should have been included in the Best Picture nominees. It was only nominated for Best Visual Effects - and it’ll probably lose to Guardians Vol. 3 or Mission: Impossible - DR1.

So…..has anyone seen American Fiction?
If "Man or Muppet" can win an Oscar, then so can "I'm just Ken". But Billie Eilish will win.

“What Was I Made For?” should win Best Song. I think the booing for “I’m Just Ken” was for the uproar after it won Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards. The booing was still rude to do - especially towards Mark Ronson. I think Ronson already has an Oscar for “Shallow”. I’m pretty sure Ronson wrote the song with Lady Gaga for A Star is Born.

Sandra Huller was better in the Zone of Interest. Despite doing nothing more than being annoyed with a servant, I still walked away from the theater thinking her character was one of the most evil women I’ve seen on the screen.

I have to see American Fiction. My writer friends all say that's very true to life! Godzilla Minus One was an amazing film and deserves way more accolades.

Well, Godzilla Minus One will always have this Oscar nomination moment, even if they deserved more nominations. ??

That X thread is a collection of various reactions to them being announced as an Oscar nominee this morning. ?

I think a lot of people don’t realize how career and life changing an Oscar nomination can be, especially if you aren’t on the performing side and/or aren’t “legendary enough” yet.

RIP Norman Jewison, director of two of my favorite movies: Fiddler on the Roof, and Moonstruck. He also did In the Heat of the Night, which I also liked. Sidney Poitier had great things to say about him - when shooting wasn't actively going on, he knew how to get actors to relax.

I'm slowly catching up with all the big 2023 movies through streaming. :) Just finished The Holdovers. That is a quietly amazing film, with great writing and performances across the board. I think it'll stay with me a long time.
I just got through watching this as well and really hope that this type of movie comes back into style... Nothing flashy, just really good writing and performances. I especially love the patience shown in just letting the story unfold and breath. I think this movie does a great job of recalling a time, mood, and way of life that seems so far removed now.

Saw Killers of the Flower Moon last night and I was so impressed. I have avoided Scorcese movies due to their violent themes, but I am so glad I saw this movie. It did not feel overlong. I thought DeNiro, DiCaprio, and of course Lily Gladstone were terrific. Gladstone gave a master class in conveying strong emotion thru the subtlest means. DeNiro was truly menacing as the scheming, murderous uncle. I had just seen Elvis, so seeing another young man manipulated by a sociopathic older man was draining. Of course DiCaprio's character was evil on his own also. Scorcese is really a master. The weaving of the court case was fascinating, and he conveyed the landscape wonderfully. I was going to avoid this one due to the sad theme, but am so glad a friend suggested it!

Just watched "The Holdovers". What a sweet, well-made movie. Paul Giamatti was wonderful, as well as the actor who played Angus and the actress who played Mary. Great writing and acting, and I liked the soundtrack as well.

Today's Oscar-nominated movie was "Anatomy of a Fall". It could also have been titled "Anatomy of a Family". French mystery, half in English and half in French. Very good acting (the young boy who played the son was really spectacular) and very interesting plot and writing. The main character wasn't the most likeable to me, but she wasn't insufferable either.

"Masterminds" is a laugh-out-loud comedy with Zach Galifianakis playing a clueless armored car driver who gets tricked into a bank heist by his crush and her pal, played by Owen Wilson. The plot's as wild as it sounds, filled with slapstick humor, silly disguises, and a bunch of misfits making the most ridiculous decisions.

Owen Wilson is the charming bad guy, and Galifianakis nails the role of an innocent guy in over his head. The supporting cast, especially Kristen Wiig, adds to the fun with their quirky characters. It's a comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously, so don't expect a masterpiece – just a good time with some laughs.

Perfect for a chill movie night if you’re into goofy crimes and unexpected heroes. It's a bit all over the place, but that's the fun of it.

I just saw Zone of Interest and it was powerful. But it’s fair to say it is a movie lover’s movie. The director opens the film with close to a minute of a blank screen, for instance. He inserted a modern-day scene in that could be jarring for people who expect a linear movie. But I thought the choices he made were very effective. The casual insertion into conversations of completely unfeeling callous attitudes. Or outright savage threats if the (forced) maids set the table wrong. The soundtrack was as eerie as anything I’ve heard in a movie, and the background sound of the camp was constant and unnerving (and mostly ignored by the family.) I really liked the use of (I’ll get the technical term wrong) infrared or ‘negative’ filming to show a girl taking risks for the prisoners.

I read reviews before going and it was really skewed — 5/5 or 0 to 1/5 — little in between! For me it was good but the best movie of the year? I don’t know.

I just watched the trailer and it was chilling ?. I’ll have to prepare myself though because you know what the sad theme is.

Lollll see you don’t know me, I’m not into Twinks Im into full fledge grown men, preferably right out of prison

Anyway we ended up not seeing it. We ended up binge watching the last six episodes of fellow travelers, oh my gosh I need lifelong therapy after watching that.
Hmmm ANL you might really like the guy who plays the Duke in Miss Scarlet and the Duke. Victorian murder mystery series. Brave women and manly bearded men in good tailoring in the foggy dangerous London streets. Catnip for moi.

Okay movie week for me! Just saw Origin. It’s the directors take on the author of Caste. The flashbacks to nazi germany and the Jim Crow south, and her visit to present-day India were really gripping. But the development of her personal backstory was a little less so. Still, I’d recommend it.

I need something light now. GOTGalaxy 3 sounds like the ticket. Is Groot a teenager? I mean in sequoia terms of course. The preview of snotty teen Groot during the credits of GOTG 2 was hilarious.

He seems more like a 20-ish-year-old to me. But if he's supposed to be a teen, that works too.

oh wow, thank you for thinking of me. I appreciate it. OK let me google this right now.

wow, you really do know me. Lol Stuart Martin, yeah, that is my type of peanut butter and chocolate right there… I need to research him more but you definitely know me!!!!

and he’s also 6 foot two ….. lovely, just lovely

what platform is this on?

I finally saw Poor Things. Overall I loved it. I love Tony McNamara's writing (The Great is one of my favorite tv shows), and Emma Stone is always amazing. I enjoyed the send-up of Frankenstein. I did think the movie got overlong with a third act that seemed sort of drawn out, but enjoyed the movie and think Emma Stone deserves all the flowers.

I saw "Transsiberian" on Peacock last night. Murder on an 8-day train ride across Russia, in the winter. Whoa, twisty and atmospheric. Ben Kingsley and Woody Harelson. I could watch Ben Kingsley in anything. He is magnetic.

I can totally do this movie but I think it’s still in theatre. Hint: don’t bend over backwards how you treat people.

I think someone mentioned above that the profile of the publishing industry in American Fiction was spot-on. If true, YIKES. The portrayal of the publisher in "Origin" was a lot more positive - they seemed to 'get it.'
