Kwan fans...

I do love rewatching all of the stellar skates... 04 nats, 98 nats, 01 worlds, 03 worlds, 95 worlds, etc

But I also find myself repeatedly watching the “bad” skates. MM, 01 GWG, ADITL, etc even though she made errors and didn’t get the result desired, I still love the music and choreo. She could still convey the potential of a program, even while having an off day.

Even 97 nats is somehow one of my fav Tajs even though she was in meltdown mode, it was somehow the first time I sat up and really took in the choreo, costume, etc The two gp events I had kinda dismissed as “oh, she’s doing Salome again but different” but by worlds I was totally on team Taj.

Ah, I see that MKForum is still in existence. Not as active but still there with a small loyal group of followers. :saint: There's a thread lamenting the fact that MK has not posted her traditional Christmas greeting since 2015. But a longtime fan saw MK at an event and reported back to the forum that Michelle has not forgotten her fans at Christmastime. She simply finds Instagram easier to use to connect with her fans. And she still has fond memories and appreciation for MKForum and her forever fans. :D

I missed seeing this video during the recent Olympics:

Michelle has grown up so much over the past five years even -- I see a great deal more polish, confidence and self-knowledge. The yoga surely has helped put her even more in touch with herself. She's always had an innate calm and wisdom.

I've seen this documentary before but not in a long while. It's worth seeing again. :encore:

That was a special win for her IMO as it is the first time she ever won as the underdog at Nationals. Everyone was picking Sasha to win that year, but Sasha faltered and Michelle came up big and trumped her. It must have been a cool feeling to win when people werent expecting you to, and a very rare one for Michelle.

She would have barely been born when Michelle skated her last Worlds in 2005. Interesting how she grew up (presumably) watching youtube clips of Michelle skating in a totally old judging system and still being inspired.

When I was watching 2016 Nationals SP, one young skater was skating to The Feeling Begins, and in the KnC she mentioned how she saw Michelle Kwan in the stands and freaked out. The girl could not have been born or was like a toddler at most when Kwan first skated to The Feeling Begins. I do think it is amazing to see how many young skaters of many disciplines today still cite Kwan as their idol. When Ice Network was still around, they interviewed various skaters in Figure Skating in Harlem after 2017 Worlds, and all of them (except maybe one) interviewed all said Michelle Kwan was their idol. I remember the skaters being Ashley Wagner, Adam Rippon, Meryl Davis/Charlie White, etc. Alex Shib said Maia was a huge Kwan fan who had all of her books and even her video game.

More specifically, my husband said Michelle Kwan was HUGE in the Chinese-American community. Even if they didn't really follow figure skating or her career specifically, they always knew of her and when they would hear something in the news about her, they paid attention. They always thought about how unusual it was for someone like Kwan and her family to take such a big risk and put her in the sport when they weren't rich (they weren't poor either though) and it's like she was an adopted person for many Chinese-American families. I really do believe the high amount of Asian-Americans in this sport can be partially attributed to Kristi Yamaguchi and Michelle Kwan being the face of figure skating in the 90s to 2000s.
