Sophie Joline - step out on the 3a so no combo; 2a fine; and step out on the 3f - pressure clearly got to her today; big hole to dig out of going into tomorrow's FS. TES tracker will get fixed after the program is over to show the 2a with correct value.

Worst case of what could go wrong with a 3A junior traveling within a week to two events.

This is still not clear to me. We`ve discussed before if a skater has planned combo and the 2nd part doesn`t happen she cannot just try again. It`s seen as her double attempt. But, here the 3A was counted as a single. So, the 2A didn`t get a score either. Do I have this right?

3A is not allowed in the SP for Jr Women as the solo Axel jump. It can be attempted as part of the required combo, which is what Sophie was going for and successfully did last week with her 3a+3t. So, she got no value for a combo. The TES would have been corrected post-skate before the scores came up to give her credit for the solo 2A as the solo Axel jump.

 Yes, two step outs is definitely the worst case. GMAFB.

Not in juniors. A double Axel is required, and a solo double or triple flip is required. The score reflects the 2A, but didn't at first because the system intended the first to be the Axel attempt block (most likely) due to not marking it as +COMBO.

This grey-toned dress with fabric scraps hanging off the arms and bodice is really unattractive on Kaneshige. That said, she's landing all her jumps today, so that's nice.

ETA - Ted says the 3f is q, as is the 3t of the 3z+3t.

Worst case of what could go wrong with a 3A junior traveling within a week to two events.
@SkateFanBerlin You wrote in the USFS International Assignments thread in GSD last week (sentence bolded by me below):
A first I was pleased for von Felten. Then, "Can she really be successful as a last minute replacement and a tough travel to China?". She seemed cool as a cucumber in SLO but this must be terribly taxing on a teenager. If she falters I hope we all remember what she did THIS week.
Well I will always remember what she did last week. :) Whatever happens tomorrow, this is a valuable learning experience for van Felten -- something she will need to go through if she is to be successful in the future, especially in Senior.

Women’s SP

Nakai

Nice high 2a to open, 3z-3t with classic held exiting edge, hammer technique on flip, quality spins, finished movement

Kim

Good 2a, spins out of 3z-3t, nice 3f, can work on her basic stroking to gain more acceleration and flow across the ice

Hwang

Easier 3t-3t combo, okay 3f and 2a, nice use of music in steps and into final spin

Wang

3z-3t efficient rotations in air, 2a, turnout on flip landing—but one of the best attempts at correct picking technique of big names here, neat, clean positions

Takagi

3z-3t, 3f done, good fluidity to her movement, nice use of arms, good 2a, triples could use more flow on the landings, nice finesse in her artistry

Von Felten

Steps out of 3a, no combo :(. Good 2a, Steps out of 3f, she’s still performing out there, but today the risk v. reward ratio wasn’t in her favor

Gurgenidze

Nice 3f, stepped out of 3z and then added 2t, but toe shouldn’t count, nice spin to end

I expected this when the USFS made the switch. I'm as excited as anyone else by Von Felten, but this was predictable and unnecessary.

All the last-minute substitution did was dial up the pressure on Von Felten while sh*tting all over Mia Kalin. In the grand scheme of things, was Von Felten possibly making the JGPF this year such a potential prize to be worth all of this? IMO, no. Especially given that the deep field here made the odds of that challenging to begin with.

Anyway, what's done is done. I'm excited by what Von Felten did last week and hope she skates well in the free skate. I will root for her, Mia Kalin, and any other US lady with the guts to try triple axels and quads, which is what's necessary in these times.

I thought Von Felten held herself together well, both in the program after the error and in the kiss & cry. Very composed, which bodes well for her future.

I hope people don’t go crazy with disappointment, but perhaps tempering fan expectations would be a good thing, too.

And Yuseong Kim kicks off the 2nd group - nice 2a; turnout on the back end of her 3z+3t - I question judges giving that combo positive GOE; solid 3a. Lovely program, all very pretty and nice, and fully blinged out the way a good Korean lady always is. Where's @Frau Muller to wax poetic about her Korean women today?

This should be behind Nakai.

Worrier prefer yesterday!

Sophie - fall out on opening 3a; fall on 2s (Mark believes she was attempting the 4s); comes back with a good 3a+2t; fall on the 3z; 3z+2a+2a - step out on the last 2a; good 3s; good 3f+2t - not the outcome she wanted, for sure, but a good learning experience for her. Hopefully we something like what we saw in Ljubljana at Sectionals and Nats.

Another really rough skate for Sophie. Stumble out of first 3A, attempted 4S turned into a double with a fall, but she did get off a 3A combo after that. The girl's got grit. :respec: Chalk it up as a learning experience.

Flip out of first 3a, then fall on 2s, lands 3a-2t!, fall on 3z, fairly empty program, back-to-back competitions are tough

Von Felton's program reminded me of Trusova in juniors; stoic face, looking down at the ice, super focused on the jumps. Hopefully this is a learning experience for her, and she'll be able to work in some of those areas over the next few years. Huge potential, but a bit underbaked today.

Good spring on 3z-2a-2a sequence, then a popped lutz. Aw juniors. Italians are having a renaissance in ladies’ skating with many good women with high jumps, hope they can develop consistency

Bath

3 loop to open, 3a flip out and hand down, hand down on 3z, seemed to pay a little less attention to the choreo at beginning (probably because of 3a attempt), but then settles in, weak exit to flying camel spin, nice for her to explore different styles of music, but want the rocker chick back for one of her programs next year

I really like Ariel Guo's dress - colors of the Ukrainian/Swedish flags - skating to the Rio soundtrack.
Gurgenidze continues to rise in the standings
I'm fine with this. I wouldn't mind her playing spoiler up at the top. ;) I'd like to see Gladki make the JGPF.

Birds chirping, 3z-2a sequence, nice extension on her jump landings, small 2a-3t, having some issues with jump rotation toward end of program, which could be a stamina issue, doing a nice job of looking up and out and engaging with the presentation

Weepy “Winner Takes It All”, her arms seem very high before she brings them in to rotate on her jumps, lots of errors on landings, falls, pitches forward, etc. nice spins, not her day
