Cute medal ceremony shenanigans:

  • Tonghe forgetting to congratulate Yanhao until he was already on the podium, then them both awkwardly trying to do it across the gold medal step, obviously feeling they shoud do this without touching the sacred 1st position.
  • Rio coming out wearing an entirely different pirate costume to the one he just skated in???
  • total failure to co-ordinate a group shape-hearts

Was it his dad’s costume? Whoever gave the intro said it was important to him to skate to POTC because his dad did.

I’m still fixated on the rose that looks like it’s going to eat Li’s head.

Wait... How old is Rio's dad? And I had no idea his dad was also a figure skater. That being said - the first POTC movie came out 21 years ago, so I suppose it's possible that his dad skated to the soundtrack and then retired within a season or two, got married & had Rio...

Rio Nakata's father, Makoto Nakata, was a figure skater who was the bronze medalist at the 2001 All Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships (Daisuke won the junior title). He also competed in the 2002 ISU Junior Grand Prix in Beijing, China (Mikhail Magerovski of Russia won the title). Makoto also became a show skater for Prince Ice World (PIW).

Makoto is currently an assistant head coach at the MF Figure Skating Academy in Chiba, Japan, where Kensuke Nakaniwa is the head coach. Absolute Skating did a nice interview with Kensuke, who talks about the MF Academy in January this year.

Makoto's profile on the Academy's website: https://mf-ice.com/academy/coache/makoto_nakata/

There are a number of talented young skaters who train at the MF Academy: Rio Nakata, Rinka Watanabe, Yuna Aoki, Ami Nakai, Yo Takagi, Tsudoi Sudo, just to name a few. This is impressive since the MF Academy started in 2021, just 3 years ago.

Taira Shinohara visited the MF Academy and had a short session (5 days) when he was in Japan this summer.

"What I thought was interesting about the MK Academy skaters was that they have this clear on-and-off switch between just having fun and then going into serious training mode," Shinohara said. "I think that 'switch' allows them to keep their motivation up for continuing to train while having fun with the process."
(I noticed the quote above incorrectly spelled the name of the Academy - it is MF (Mitsui Fudosan), not MK).
