Yep. Unless the U.S. gives von Felton China and pulls Kalin to see if she could earn it, which I doubt they’ll do.
Yeah, I can't see the USFS doing that. And, honestly, they shouldn't because Kalin's put up a pretty nice NQS score that's +190, so it's possible she could play spoiler to some more JGPF aspirants next week. Which may be what I'm rooting for at this point, lol.

Kalin also has quads and sometimes a triple axel, so I'm not in favor of bumping her.

I think the US needs to put women with clean 3As and quads at the front of the line for JGPs, summer competitions be damned. Programs with 3As and quads are going to take longer to get consistent and score well. But programs without them have very little chance of medalling. The USFS wasted a lot of space on the JGP with some fairly pedestrian entrants.

USA wins both single events here!!! I’ll watch today’s final group when I can.

Hope that Sophie can get a visa to China.

Welllll, Kalin has had plenty of JGP opportunities prior to this season because of her quads and the best she's managed were two 4ths a couple years ago. I think von Felten is a better skater than Kalin, but I also haven't seen Kalin since last winter so maybe she'll impress next week.

Programs without quads and 3A have won all the medals on the JGP aside from those of Mao Shimada and Sophie

Because that's the best case scenario, IMO.

There's probably not anything they can do at this point to expedite a visa for Sophie and switch her out, plus it would be enormous pressure on her to go there (especially facing up against 2 other JGP gold medalists in Yuseong Kim & Yihan Wang) to try and secure a JGPF spot.

As a singles skater, von Felton has to be either a US citizen or US resident for at least a year, which means any visa that is for longer than a year with intent to stay, unless, according to one of the Communications, you can show residence another way, and the ISU Council can do what it wants anyway. Her ISU bio says her former coach was Arutunian, so she’s been in the US for training, but, technically, an athlete’s visa alone is not enough without an ISU override.

She has no results from calendar year 2023, and her only competition in the 2023-4 season was Swiss Nationals, where she placed 9th in Juniors. I can see why Switzerland would release her based on results, having placed in the 2’s in two JGP’s in 2022, if they use results as a criteria.

The typo made me wonder if she placed 9th in Switzerland, and that’s what made her decide to switch.

Kalin has had multiple chances on the JGP without great results and Sophie has more potential so strike while the iron is hot and get her to China somehow if you can. If not get her another international assignment before Nationals.

She's already scheduled for Tayside Trophy next week.

Who knows? The USFS may surprise the heck out of us and yank Mia's JGP and swap Sophie in if they can sort out a visa for her last minute, etc. But I'm not holding my breath on that, lol.

What just happened???? Just watched the women’s final in Ljubljana and

Where did this Sophie come from? Well deserved win with two clean triple axel/triple toe combos and a solo clean triple axel. Just wow…after pretty dismal showings by the other U.S. women on the JGP so far. Yes, she needs better skating skills and refinement. Her movement is still pretty sloppy to my eye. Curved fingers and throwing her arms around. But still very impressive. Honestly though I winced when I saw she was coached by the Letovs.

Love Jia Shin so much. But WHY did she move to Orser? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. For me she is my favorite type of skater with refinement, delicacy but power too. I want the old Jia back!!

Mei Okada is very lovely and I enjoyed her quite a bit.

Anna Pezzetta’s height and spring on her jumps is something to behold. What an athlete!! She always looks unhappy and worried. With that talent she should have all the confidence in the world. She does tend to wrap her jumps a bit but hopefully can work to eliminate that.

Oh and a nitpick about the commentators. Mark has gotten into this bad habit of frequently going HMMMMMMM a lot. It’s driving me bananas. And now I’m hearing it from Ted too. Uggh!

What's the matter with the Letovs (I'm scared to ask)?
They are okay but I feel like they don’t teach the best jump technique or skating skills. And not the best choreography and costuming either. But maybe others can allay my fears??? Looks like Sophie has worked with Arytunian. I’d put her in Malinina’s camp if I could.

Oh, I'm glad it's only that. Nowadays, whenever someone has negative feelings about a coach, I'm scared there's an abuse scandal or something. Sign of the times, unfortunately. :(

What is wrong with Letov?
And Jia needs to run away from Orser.

Sophie seems charming and those jumps, wow! SUI missed out if she can stay healthy.
Her triple axels look so easy for her and i love how she hardly slows down it drives me crazy watching skaters slow to a crawl going into their axel jumps. Alysa may have been the worst offender back when she was winning US titles she literally came to a stop going into her triple axels. I also love her entrances into those axel jumps.

Just watched from my hotel in Amman!

SJ Von Felten in R&J: WOW WOW WOW! Not the greatest stylist but what girthy jumps and the rest was overall fantastic. THREE CHEERS for the last minute using my all-time favorite March from the Prokofiev ballet. I had been dreaming of a woman using that for ultimate oomph in a FS! I couldn’t believe when I heard the music turn to that.

Jia Shin lovely but her boat came & went. She reminded me of Orser skating with little landing faults at the 1988 Olympics after a perfect skate by Boitano. Full circle.

In case anyone missed the news that Sophie Joline is in fact going to Wuxi now instead of Mia, it’s being discussed in the “2024-25 USFS International Assignments” thread in GSD.
