It's that time again! 2018 post-canadians annual pairs and dance splits (and retirements post Olys)

In the middle of the season, I/M did an interview saying they were retiring and wanted to explore pro careers as they thought they had a lot to offer there.
Reading between the lines, I think something has diverted this plan, which could either be their desire to completely go separate ways and/or opportunities Dylan wants to prioritize for himself.

This would leave Luba deciding what to as a result do with her life. She's probably looking at coaching, choreo, re-pairing to compete or do shows or a bunch of things. With all the pair boys out there looking, I'm sure she's getting calls and we'll know more about direction she's taking in a few months.

With not going to Olympics in Canada all the pro opportunities in skating would have dried up in an instant...cause this is Canada. We also do not know just what the hidden injuries Dylan obtained from his accident might effect his future athletic pursuits. So that puts step #2 to the forefront of their life after competitive skating..I would think coaching choreo.maybe training was Lubov's #2 unless she does decide to look for another partner. The Olympics would have brought her dreams to full circle but now??? She had been completely supported by Dylan & it is only in the last yr that she could have earned $or that the team rec'd any funding for her. I hope she has been offered opportunities and is just whizzing them round.

I think behind the scenes there's some concern here. They are fairly accident prone in training. Not sure if that's a fluke or what but I'm sure that's being looked at.

I have heard that she could be as little as one more concussion away from being forced to pack it in. Hard to know how true that is, but, oi, how do you train under those circumstances?
I read an article (post-Worlds, so they were obviously not dwelling on their placement there) in which Charlie said their goal after this season was to get into the world top 5 over the next few seasons and to medal in Beijing. Clearly they are a lot less worried or at least a lot more optimistic about their future as a team than many here are.

In fairness, most athletes would talk like this in the media if they were 100% healthy or on their last legs. Athletes hold a lot back to maintain a certain presence or image...esp in the eyes of international officials.

I have no doubt she feels pretty decent right now and they are ready to regain their fitness and train to improve. What we don't know is what further setbacks might do to the big picture...and I highly doubt they would speculate about that in the media. They are sensibly living in the present because that's what is real and known.

Article yesterday from radio-Canada focusing on Julianne Seguin. Thought I’d put if here just given the discussion.

https://ici.radio-canada.ca/sports/...ie-bilodeau-jeux-olympiques-pyeongchang-pekin

I don’t have time to translate the whole thing right now, but basically it says she had 3 concussions in 2017 ( January, April and July). They happened in training and shows. She says she trains more intelligently now, trying to ensure she is mentally and physically prepared before attempting any element on the ice. They are looking towards Beijing, planning out the next 4 years.

Yikes, 3 concussions in 6 months. While obviously they sound like they have no plans of stopping, it wouldn’t surprise me if just 1 more concussion could derail everything. Please stay healthy, Julianne!

The training part is a recurring theme I have heard from skaters as they mature. Years ago Joubert hurt himself pretty badly on a 3Z, a jump he doesn't stress over as he found it really easy. He wasn't feeling great that day and thinking of something else when he tried the jump. He said he learned his lesson, that he had to be mentally focused for every element in practice as you can suffer really serious and stupid injuries at any time and on any thing.

D/R said the same thing, learning the quad later in their careers. Their training sessions got shorter and smarter, getting everything they could out of every rep. Quality over quantity. Comes up a lot.

I hope S/B are able to have more quality training now and the lessons they learned didn't come too late.

So happy that they are continuing.. or at least it sounds like it!!!!

Maxime Deschamps has posted on Facebook (in both English & French) that he is no longer partnered with Sydney Kolodziej:
As many know now. I am without a partner.
The association with my old partner ended at the end of the season.
I would like to thank her for all the experiences we had together and wish her the best of luck in her future projects.
As for me, I want to continue my career and try to find a new partner.
I would like to thank all the people who support me. My coaches, friends, families, Action Sport Physio Vaudreuil and zone sportive Beauharnois.

Bumping back up with new pairs & dance teams known so far:
Shalena Rau and Steven Lapointe have partnered as per Patinage Québec [2018-19 Team B athletes list]: https://patinage.qc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Athlète-B-2018-2019.pdf
Per the list linked above, Alice Fabbri's new partner is Paul Ayer (14th in Junior Dance with Jolie Che at 2017 Canadians).

Also on the Quebec B list are Cassidy McFarlane & Alexandre Faucher (at Challenge he was 20th in Junior Dance with Théadora Sauvé and she placed 21st with Kameron Jeromkin) and Emmy Bronsard & Aissa Bouaraguia (coached in Gadbois) who are the 2017 Canadian Pre-Novice Dance silver medalists (did not compete Novice at Challenge last December).

Re. Pairs:
Also interesting to note [on Team B list] Steven Lapointe former partner, Chloé Panetta is now with Benjamin Mimar, probably in junior.

Also William St-Louis who was [8th in Novice] last year with Veronique Turbide in novice is now with Laurence Cormier. I don't think she had previous pair experience. My guess is they will be in Novice for this season.

New team: Loriana Cocca/Claudio Pietrantonio. She is a synchro skater, most recently in Les Suprêmes Junior, transitioning over to ice dance.

The first in a series of articles featuring new teams on ice-dance.com. https://www.ice-dance.com/site/getting-to-know-loriana-cocca-claudio-pietrantonio/

Wishing all the best for this new team as a big fan of Claudio.
I hope that Loriana's transition will be successful with caring Caludio's help, even though it will take time.
According to the article, at their first season they will dance to “Verano Porteño” (Astor Piazzolla) for SD and West Side Story for FD.
I can't wait to see their program.

Me too. Have been following Alicia and Claudio for 2yrs on JGP and they were my fav. junior team. Claudio moves beautifully and I find is similar to Jean-Luc Baker in skills. Best of luck for both new teams in junior and senior events this year.

Could this mean that there is a chance synchro will be approved by the IOC, and that she decided to stay in synchro with hope of making one?

I'm sorry it didn't work out. He's a good performer--just on the small side so challenging to find a partner. It seemed like it could be a good fit in that she had skated at a high level in synchro and was willing to try this new adventure.

Was this Lubov I. news ever posted? Tweeted on June 1st: https://twitter.com/SkateCanada/status/1002619911699607554
#Update Lubov Ilyushechkina will be joining @Cirque du Soleil! Lubov took this new challenge after her partner Dylan Moscovitch retired from skating in April. She is looking forward to this unique opportunity that Cirque will provide to further enhance her style of performing!
