ISU Grand Prix Assignments 2018/19 season

Also, Tessari/Fioretti share a coaching team (Barbara Fusar-Poli & crew) with fellow Finland GP Dance competitors Guignard/Fabbri and Koch/Nuchtern, so some politicking or budget crunching could also have been factors.

Re: Tessari/Fioretti getting the spot at Finland... they scored 147.70 as their total score last week at Lombardia Trophy.

Although they were down in 69th place in the 2017-18 Season's Best list, pretty far from being in the top 10 on the substitution list, unless there were some splits above them I don't know about (very possible), their 147.70 score from Lombardia would slot them in the upper half of the teams on last year's Season's Best list.

38. Evdokimova/Bazin 150.28 RUS (Rostelecom)
39. Muller/Dieck 150.14 GER (SA)
42. Yanovskaya/Lukacs 148.69 HUN (Rostelecom)
51. Koch/Nuchtern GER 141.18 (Finland)
54. Shpilevaya/Smirnov 139.83 RUS --
55. Sales/Wamsteeker 139.48 CAN (SC)
56. Urban/Steffan 139.44 GER --
59. Sosnitskaia/Golovishnokov 137.58 RUS --
60. Kuzmichova/Sinicyn 136.81 CZE --
61. Popova/Byelikov 136.06 BLR --

Popova & Byelikov are competing on the JGP so they can't compete on the GP. Sosnitskaia & Golovishnokov weren't at Russian test skates, were they? I can't find the old list for who was invited. But if not, I'd assume T&F are #10 on the replacement list.

Surprised the Spanish team didn't get that one.

The U.S. has more GP pairs spots than any other country.
That’s kinda nuts considering the state of US pairs at Worlds recently. So only one pair this year, Huh? It better turn into two for next year.

It might come down to S/K having to carry the load all by themselves at Worlds again just like the last two years if they win Nationals again. No team should have to do all the heavy lifting at Worlds like this team has had to do. In 2017 they did all they could to secure two spots a Worlds and would have gotten them for the Olympics if not for a loophole by finishing in the top ten at one of the best skated Pairs events in recent memory and that was coming off of them being out most of the season. Last season they were burned out at Worlds but it would have been nice if the 2nd US team could have made the LP the last two years.

I disagree that it was a loophole: there are a fixed number of Olympics spots to be determined by prior Worlds and a way to determine the cut-off, which the Knierims were on the wrong side of. I think the ISU rules about this are the wrong ones, but that's neither here nor there.

FISHER/MALETTE-PAQUETTE- 67 (no 18-19 comps yet)
F/MP are currently still listed for JGPs #6 & 7 (on both ISU and Skate Canada's websites).
L/R also are still listed for JGPs #6 & 7 on the ISU website. ETA: They competed RD only at the French Masters.

KUZMICHOVA/SINICYN- 60 (no 18-19 comps yet)

These two also did not compete during the 2nd half of last season. They didn't attend Nationals. There was a Czech test skate last year (in which Mansour & Ceska reappeared out of the woodwork after disappearing mid-season the year before), but I haven't seen any reports on one this year. A number of no-shows, thus far, down here in the lower ranks so here is a dance list including them (with ?s) and also the top 10 senior teams that we actually know are together & training.

Evdokimova & Bazin
Muller & Dieck
Yanovskaya & Lukacs
Koch & Nuchtern
Shpilevaya & Smirnov
Urban & Steffan
Sales & Wamsteeker
Sosnitskaia & Golovishnokov?
Kuzmichova & Sinicyn?
Tessari & Fioretti
Kavaliova & Bieliaiev?
Plutowska & Flemin (Not sure whether to label these two with a ? or not. They haven't competed yet and reportedly aren't ready yet; but per another poster, we know they are together & training).
Jakushina & Nevskiy?
Manta & Johnson
Fukase & Tateno (reportedly dealing with coming back from an injury)
Calderone & Papetti

When Pogo/Nevsky marriage announcements were made this summer, the press often referred to Nevsky as "former figure skater"..

ETA from the Grand Prix Announcement:

7.6 Replacements
It is mandatory that an Organizing ISU Member replaces any Pair who withdraws from the event with an
alternate up to fourteen (14) days prior to the Team Leaders Meeting for that event.

For a Ladies or Men Skater, up to fourteen (14) days prior to the Team Leaders Meeting for that event, it is
voluntary that an Organizing ISU Member replace any Skater who withdraws from the event who would be the
11th or 12th entry, but must replace with an alternate any Skater who withdraws if fewer than 10 entries remain.
For an Ice Dance couple, up to fourteen (14) days prior to the draw for that event, it is voluntary that a host
country replace any Ice Dance couple who withdraws from the event who would be the 9th or 10th entry, but
must replace any Dance couple who withdraws with an alternate couple if fewer than 8 entries remain.
At the fourteen day mark, consideration will be given by the ISU Grand Prix Coordination Group to leaving a
position vacant because of visa requirements or unduly high travel costs that would be incurred by the
Organizing ISU Member.

The Team Leaders Meeting for Skate America is scheduled for Thursday, October 18 at 10 am Pacific time.

Kavaliova & Bieliaiev have moved on; I've seen her for sure in photos of casts performing on a cruise ship. Can't recall if he was there too.

Plutowska & Flemin are training Montreal according to some Instagram posts last month. On Ice Perspectives filmed them practicing on a trip to Montreal.

The Pairs list was updated on 10/8 and the SA Team Leaders Meeting is on 10/18---that is only 10 days, well past the 14 day interval in which a replacement is required.

Really, the only pair that could fill the vacancy is Walsh / Michaud, and who knows if they even want to do two events back-to-back.

@shuilee asked about the Grand Prix starting order draws in another thread and I thought I would re-post my answer here as well.

From the current Grand Prix Announcement:
For the purpose of the draw, the Competitors are listed and ranked in accordance with the latest ISU World
Standings
at the time of the Team Leaders Meeting at the respective Event. Skaters/Pairs/Couples, who have
not received any ISU World Standing points will be listed at the bottom of the list in country order.

I just hope Li isn't injured from over-practising high risk pair elements. She is completely new to pairs.
Competing on the GP a few months after starting pairs is extremely ambitious. I don’t think it was ever realistic unless she’s just an incredible talent for pairs. It was probably always a gamble. They probably thought if she is a genius then great. And if she’s not then oh well, it’s not like she’ll ever get close to a medal in singles.
