ISU Grand Prix Assignments 2018/19 season

Grids were updated, almost all the host spots were filled.

Ladies: Rika Kihira at NHK, Sofia Samodurova at RC, Lea Serna at IdF. Host spot at Finland still open.
Men: Sota Yamamoto at NHK, Kevin Aymoz at IdF
Pairs: Esbrat/Novoselov finally crossed out at IdF
Dance: Tweedale/Buckland at SA (replacing Min/Gamelin I think?), Morozov/Bagin at RC, Galayavieva/Thauron at IdF (I didn't even know he had a new partner. Turkkila/Versluis also marked at Finland as new but I think we already knew that??)

You mean IdF

After watching the test skates, it's clear that Morozova/Bagin getting the spot was pure politics. It was like they just started skating and learning the choreo two weeks ago.

Knowing Morozov that is probably the case. But in all fairness Annabelle has promise, Bagin well has always been just Bagin.

Im curious is this the same Annabelle Morozov that skated in singles in the US as a juvenile
Yes (ETA that she competed through the Novice level in the U.S). She then skated for France in junior singles before switching to ice dance.

Her mother is French, her dad is Russian and it seems like she was living in the US a lot (if she wasn't born there), so I'm not surprised.

And of course, let's not forget her dad's Belarussian citizenship (not that I expect it was passed on to his daughter...) I forgot he also competed for Azerbaijan, although since it was only at Worlds and not Olympics, he may never have been a citizen. Given that he competed for 3 countries, including his native Russia, Annabelle comes by country-hopping naturally.

I don't see what Annabelle Morozov is doing country-hopping. (Not that I think there's anything wrong with it, given how few opportunities there are in skating. No one is coercing the new member to accept them.) Plenty of skaters skate for the US or Canada when the are resident in the US or Canada before skating for their country of citizenship or other country of citizenship.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. And she has a legitimate claim to each of the three countries she has skated in/for (and even if she didn't, I wouldn't really care all that much, especially in pairs and dance where finding a partner is hard). But she has literally skated in three countries, so it's what she has done, regardless of the reason. Anyway, I was just trying to make a lame joke about how she is following in dear old dad's footsteps. Hopefully that's the only way she does.

Why shouldn’t she switch if she can? In the USA she very likely had to pay for her training. When she skated for France, I don’t think that France funds skaters of her level either. So then she switched to skate for Russia, got to the nationals team and has it for free.

If she skated for France, and she was released to be able to skate for another country, I say, :cheer2::40beers::biggrinbo.

I don't think she skated internationally for the US: many skaters compete in the US if their family is living there, but they hold other or multiple citizenships. It starts locally.

That's a really remarkable statement on the state of US Ice Dance that that many teams could get two invitations to the Grand Prix (yes, post Olympic season, but still).

I wish the Reynoldses had a high enough score to get a GP spot :(

Torn/Partanen out of GP Helsinki, Peltonen in for ladies, Koch/Nuchtern and Tessari/Fioretii are in for dance.

I don't think she's come close to my favorite "hopper" Isabella Tobias. And Isabella had absolutely no connection to 2 of her 4 countries besides "need a partner/spot for the games".

Re: Tessari/Fioretti getting the spot at Finland... they scored 147.70 as their total score last week at Lombardia Trophy.

Although they were down in 69th place in the 2017-18 Season's Best list, pretty far from being in the top 10 on the substitution list, unless there were some splits above them I don't know about (very possible), their 147.70 score from Lombardia would slot them in the upper half of the teams on last year's Season's Best list.
