ISU Congress & elections 2022

A picture tells a thousand words ....
If you watched it, do you know if it's for figure skating, speed skating, or both? If it's both, I'm interested in knowing why Europe doesn't have a slightly larger share, because Europe does very well at speed skating (but then, I suppose it's a smaller share of population). Didn't expect Asia to have more than half the share all on its own (since only the East Asian countries do well at all at skating, and winter sports in general), but the ordering seems perfectly logical.

I'm not surprised in the slightest RUS and BLR are allowed to participate; more of the same from the ISU. Anyone expecting any meaningful change from this Congress is woefully naive.

Both. If you want to re-watch today's session, it is still up on ISU YouTube Channel.

Again, this is a precautionary measure. I have some hope for the "Extraordinary Event" Proposal, as @Karen-W mentioned.

In fact I did (scrolled to that part), and can confirm it's both.

Given the economies of China, South Korea and Japan, it's not surprising. Remember, Short Track Speed Skating is big in S. Korea, as is figure skating.

How to make it even harder for good skaters with low rankings to overcome the psychological impact of skate order on judging, take 2729217364839020199.3?
It's for the FD/FS. So it's based on how the entrants do in the SP/RD which is under their control.

It's a picture worth remembering the next time someone complains about the Olympic season Grand Prix Finals always being in Japan.
Yeah, well, if the TV revenue is so lucrative, then why isn't the JSF stepping up go host 4CCs more frequently?

Because it's 4CC innit. Why bid for it when you can get Worlds ever four years? :shuffle:
Well, if they get Worlds every 4 years, plus WTT every other year, then why again do they need to host the GPF in an Olympic season? After all, the chances of them having 3 men and women at 4CCs who are strong medal contenders is far higher than at the GPF.

It would add some drama if skaters could pick their starting order for the FS/FD.

Having a computer randomly generate start orders for SP/SD could be possible, though. Wouldn't seem to take much more time than going reverse order. I like the top seeds going in later groups, but would appreciate some randomness to the start order.
I would love the drama any changes to starting orders creates, but...

What's possible heavily depends on what's possible in the eyes of the TV networks. I could see start groups in reverse order of ranking work, but if it's random an networks would be forced to show very low ranking skaters, I could see networks giving a lot of pushback.

Edit: Thinking about this more, I also wonder how this proposal would affect attendance? Fanyus are the worst offenders by far, but a lot of fans in general only come for the last couple of groups. If all the top names went first, it would start full but the stands would empty quick. If the skaters were randomized among groups, it may keep the stands more consistently full.

Because for Japanese TV it isn't about having three Japanese medal contenders. It's about having a competition that will be a preview and build anticipation towards the Olympics themselves.

Also, one other observation from last night's Technical Rules meeting to discuss the various proposals. There were a fair number of questions directed at the TCs regarding the 3 PCS recommendation. Sam Auxier asked if they had conducted any tests of their proposal and whether or not it had the intended impact the TCs were aiming for, which got a lot of heads nodding in the room. There were others who mentioned that they were uncertain about the necessity to reduce PCS to 3 categories if the split judging panel motion passed. My initial take is that one or the other is likely to pass, but not both, and I won't be surprised if it's the split judging panel that is adopted rather than the change to 3 PCS categories.

Good. More room for the real fans to stretch out and enjoy the skating! ;)

Here are the livestream links for Tuesday in Thailand:
For Mon Jun 6 thru Wed Jun 8, I believe the streaming links correspond to the schedule (in local time) from the agenda like so:
...
TUESDAY, JUNE 7
~ 09.00 to 12.30 Congress – agenda items A.17-A.18
https://youtu.be/5pMZt8uss2I [Jun 6 at 9:45 pm EDT]
~ 12.30 to 14.00 Lunch
~ 14.00 to 17.00 Congress – agenda items A.17-A.18

ETA: The morning session is starting with Agenda item no. 12.

BTW, Cizeron's Instagram story earlier today showed him at the airport in Japan (Fantasy on Ice tour resumes in mid-June) and headed to Phuket (I assume Papadakis is going with him).

09.00 to 12.30 Congress – agenda items A.17-A.18
Just a heads up - they still have to get through agenda items A.12 (approval of ISU Council decisions - including the War in Ukraine one), A.13 (Disciplinary Report), and A.16 (Drafting Matters Approval) before they begin A.17, which is debating & voting on the Motions amending the ISU Constitution.

Item A.12 approved, pending one clarification regarding prize money in speed skating (at 4CC).

Item A.13 - Full report presented; the chair is stepping down after about 20 years.

Item A.16 - nothing presented for approval.

About the bid on competitions: since Asia as a whole is lucrative, I hope we see more competitions in other parts of it. It will be difficult to do it in South East Asia, yes, but I still want to see more competitions in China and South Korea. I wish they would add a couple more GPs, Korea should have one.

That one's better to pass, too.

It has nothing to do with being "real fans" for me, but rather simple etiquette and courtesy to those around you. Real people, maybe, then.
