Aleksandra Trusova's interview for sport-express.ru
Q: Where are you now
Trusova: We are in the summer house together with the family, which does not happen often - usually am just with my mom

Q: The worlds cancellation
Trusova: first I couldnt believe it was cancelled, I could not imagine what needs to happen in order for the competition to be cancelled. I was really upset, I worked so hard for it, I was so prepared. My family really supported me and now we are quarantining together

Q: Do you think it was possible to hold a competition without the viewrs?
Trusova: No, I think it was a right decision. The viewers are needed, they support

Q: There is an idea to hold it in October. Would you want it or you'd rather forget?
Trusova: When it was first announced I thought it would be great in October - after all we already made it to the team. But now we don't know how long all that will be going on, so I don't know.

Q: How do you go on? I know you train hard, do you play on your computer? Watch the TV?
Trusova: I mainly study for the school exams. I didn't have enough time to study - thanks to the teachers who were workign with me in their after times. So I read the books and get ready for the exam, we hardly ever watch the TV.

Q: It was postponed?
Trusova: Right, it is still in June, but to June.

Q: There were talks about it being online?
Trusova: I don't know

Q: It would be easier to cheat if the exam is online. Did you ever cheat?
Trusova: The last time I had to examine on anything was in the primary school. When I was not bad. I didn't need to cheat. Otherwise I usually do home exams or projects. So I haven't done exams for a while and no reason to cheat.

Q: you spend a lot of time with your brothers. Did you teach them anything?
Trusova: I tried, it looks funny. We usually do valleyball etc - not my sports. Vania - the smallest is boxing now, he is 5, he is trying to teach me things. He is very serious about it.

Q: You are a specialist on the quads. I've seen someone doing a 3A on the floor, is it possible to train a 4 on the floor?
Trusova: More than 3.5... I tried, but you only rotate a bit more. Axel is easier, well, for me on the floor than on the ice, so I can't train the quads on the floor.

Q: So it's worse for you than for the others - they can train the triple jumps on the floor
Trusova: It's bad for everyone - no matter how much you jump on the floor the feeling on the ice is different ,hence it's hard for us to keep in the shape.

Q: Are you frightened by the situation?
Trusova: No. Am here with my family, things have hardly changed, just that we don't meet people anymore and we don't train. So no, I haven't felt any fear.

Q: What are you reading?
Trusova: A lot of things, Agatha Cristy..
Q: Yes, you mentioned her
Trusova: Right, that and sci fi

Q: What about the new season? Do you have any programmes ideas? Last year you had the GOT, now you have a chance to watch the TV shows.
Trusova: Not yet, there was no time on the ice - usually Gleikhengauze brings the music and we listen. We are home now and there are no ideas for the new season.

Q: Do you have any preferences? Last show you skated in February you had a new programme with a new dress.
Trusova: It was my coaches' idea - they offered me a lyrical proramme just to try, and I wanted to try that style for a while. I don't know, but think it was quite nice. I liked it.

Q: So perhaps you'll turn it into an SP next season?
Trusova: There is no such plan for right now but perhaps it will be something lyrical. Perhaps something else. So far we havent' discussed it.

Q: But that's where you wanted to develop? The lyrical?
Trusova: I want to try different things

Q: You were trying the 3A on that show. Is that the main jump to learn?
Trusova: I have to get it to be consistent. I don't always make it right, it's still the hardest jump for me. And all the quads for the next season and being consistent.

Q: Last season - how would you mark it?
Trusova: B?

Q: So there is something you are not satisfied with?
Trusova: Of course

Q: So nationals/europeans- you expected to place higher?
Trusova: I did not skate my programmes as I wanted. I aimed for 5 quads but I only landed 4.

Q: Would you be able to land it at the worlds? Taking that video you published?
TRusova: I don't know. The practice and the competition are not the same, I needed to focus. I could had skated better at the GPF, I could had skated better at the nationals. I just didn't focus at the right moment.

Q: Do your parents give you advice?
Trusova: My father is an athlete and he always gives me advice how to train and set my mind. But they are mainly supporting me. Mom knows all about figure skating - she comes to every practice and gives me advice. But am first of all their daughter and they support me.

Q: So they never said something like `Why did you jump this way and not that way?'
Trusova: Of course not.

Q: The Trusova/Scherbakova/Kostornaya - you rotate the wins and the Worlds were always yours. I.e. the girls owe you?
Trusova: Surely they don't owe me. I wanted to reach my goal which I set once I was able to land the flip - I wanted 5 quads. Am glad I was able to land 3-4 - it's something I was unable to do last season. 5 didn't happen yet, hope next year.

Q: We don't often see you crying but you were after the skate at the nationals. Yet you were smiling in the press conf. How did you regroup so fast?
Trusova: I have a lot of support and was told not to cry. Even the neighbours were saying so. I think I should not show my emotions publically

Q: Did Anna and Aliona give you words of support?
Trusova: Sure. We understand each other well, so they did not get on the way, they said some words of support, I congradulated them and then we were just having fun as usually

Q: What did Tutberidze say?
Trusova: well, she said what were the mistakes, said we'll work harder. That I have to runthrough more.

Q: Do you have any rituals? Are you superstitious?
Trusova: No. I don't believe in that. I set my self by the way I feel. I take my dog with me, but it's for the soul.

Q: I spoke to your teacher and she said you didn't have a real childhood. Do you agree?
Trusova: I don't understand what is a real childhood. I had a great childhood. I always did what I want, I can ride everything - bicycle, rollers, skates, I have the electric stuff. My life is different, I travel so much, I see so many countries and I love it and I would never give it away.

Q: What is your favourite country and where would you want to move?
Trusova: I'd like to live in Russia. I loved Japan - they love figure skating and the mood there is great. The unusual - Australia - I got to see the animals that don't exist here like a koala and a kengoroo - I got to hold them and feed them. I loved it. Though it's a far flight.

Q: You are no longer a kid?
Trusova: Well, if am skating in the seniors - guess I am. I have 2 little brothers and 2 dogs. The 2 dogs are my responsibility.

Q: The phone - do you have favourite bloggers? Do you tiktok?
Trusova: It's a great thing, that you can communicate and find any information from any point. You order everything you need through the phone. There are no bloggers, I usually watch funny animals videos. I never made videos for tiktok myself - my sister and I wanted to try, but it didn't work. I only watch stuff that my brother shows me.

Q: Twice in the GP you were with Medvedeva, who is someone you said you look up to. Did you have a chance to talk?
Trusova: Sure, we speak to each other, when she was still training in Tutberdize's group we always shared the room in Novogorsk so we had things to talk about.

Q: Did she give you any advice?
TRusova: Not really, just greetings.

Q: The nationals - her boot broke and she withdrew. Is it possible to skate on the broken boot or you have to withdrow?
Trusova: I don't know exactly what broke in her boots. But skating on the broken boots is bad - you can injure yourself, so I think she did the right thing.

Q: You aimed to try the 4loop at the end of the season. Any successful attempts?
Trusova: I didn't have a chance to try. Rozanov and Dudakov were attending the kids competitions, they are the ones who work with the harmet and I needed them, they were not present so I couldn't try.

Q: Did you see the attempt of the Korean skater?
Trusova: Yes, sure, but it was not clear.

Q: Does it motivate you to try and land it first in a competition before she does?
Trusova: I'd love that, but for now I didn't even have a chance to try.

Q: Zagitova tried some pairs moves in the shows. Would you like to try pairs skating - you already landed a sbs 4 jump.
Trusova: I cant' imagine being in the pairs, am too afraid.. I don't trust the others, the split twists and the throw jumps.

Q: The second part of the season - there are only the main competitions, but the others end the season in December. Do you think there should be another competition?
Trusova: I don't know. I guess it would be nice. But not later than the Worlds - that's when we start working on the quads. But between the Europeans and the Worlds- why not?

Q: Were you following the ISU awards and was it important for you to win?
TRusova: I was not following, yes, it would be nice to win it.

Q: There are talks about the age change. Till when do you plan competing?
Trusova: Till the age of 22. But I don't know, we'll see.

Q: And then?
Trusova: And then have 3 kids - two girls and a boy. And a lot of dogs.

Q: So are there any candidates?
Trusova: No. While am in the sport it can't happen ,it would take my mind off.

Q: So you don't even date?
Trusova: Nope.

Q: The offered rules change are related by you 3 skating so well. What would you answer those who want to raise the seniors age to 18.
Trusova: I don't want it to go up. But there is nothing I can answer - it's not my decision. I'd like to continue in the seniors - I skated the juniors for 2 years and I'd like to remain a senior.

Q: Which country would you travel once its' all over?
Trusova: If we have time - to the sea or to Spain to the adventures park.

Q: what would you tell your fans?
Trusova: Stay home, stay safe, be healthy.

🤔 “Did you ever cheat?” Jeez, what kind of a question is that? Trusova should have had some fun with her answer... “hell yes I cheat! - you?” 🤷‍♀️

Unless she remains underweight and a waif, Trusova and her frantic, cluttered, low-height, fast rotation jumps with sloppy take-off techniques will disappear from being competitive.

That's a rather harsh (and IMO almost totally inaccurate) characterization. Did you see her side-by-side quad with Hanyu? Her jump is just as high and has the same amount of air time as his when compared directly, as shown by the remarkably good unison, which is particularly impressive given how much smaller she is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Muk64h-sWE

Ignore him. He only sees what he wants to see. Other coaches and skaters think her technique is fine. She's extremely fit and strong.

She is adorable and with what little I can glean from her public persona, she seems to have a lot of grit and determination. All the best to her - she is amazing!

Thanks for posting the interview. I always love the interviews with the Russian ladies. Always so refreshing and candid! Not the usual puke of I did my best, blah, blah. She was very diplomatic about Med's boot failure at Nationals, but it came across as candid, not fake.

I haven't been on here for awhile, been dealing with the new life we are all leading and working from home. I was exposed to a co-worker with COVD and spent two weeks utterly fearing for my life (I didn't get it, TG), not looking at skating sites much.

Last time I checked awhile ago, the Russian ladies were still training, but by the interview above, I'm assuming their rink closed. Curious - are any of the elite skaters able to train right now (all countries)? All the rinks in the Boston area are closed, but that's the extent of my knowledge. I have no idea what's going on rink-wise in most of the world (except the Italian morgue rinks, which made me really sad).

As far as I know, rinks are closed everywhere, except maybe Sweden (I know their schools are still open, but that could change soon). A few places where it's cold enough to skate on outdoor lakes mean skaters are occasionally using those. Jenni Saarinen posted a few triples on her Insta, for example.

It will be interesting to see what happens when things eventually get back to normal. Younger skater should have an advantage since it's easier to get back into physical activity, but will all of them be disciplined and smart about off-ice training? Discipline not likely to a problem at Sambo 70, I know ;). Also, I imagine it must be harder to figure out off-ice practice arrangements if you're in a large city and live in a small apartment.

I'm a 52-year-old adult skater and I was in the best skating shape I've been in years right before this happened. My theory was you use it, you don't lose it. I kept pushing myself and I was feeling great.

I'm doing yoga every day virtually with my studio and walking a lot (distancing from others). My roller skates might need to come out of semi-retirement and get the outdoor wheels put on.

I can't imagine being an elite skater and how they are feeling. I'm a non-elite adult silver level skater who doesn't compete. They train their whole lives for this and it's a career for them.

Most of us have been injured (I cracked my femur), but we get up. Hopefully someday we can all skate again, whether it's quads or single flip/loop or just stroking around on two feet. Skating has been a part of my life for over 20 years and I miss it.
