Hersh is a good writer, and it's obvious he loves Javi's storylines (likely even more Javi's quads). I almost forget that Javi is coming in to Boston as the defending World champion, since so much of the focus is on Hanyu and Chan.

Nice photo of Javi with his family (including Miki Ando and daughter Himawari) on the beach. Hersh spends time discussing Javi's relationship with Miki.

One thing I want to know is if Javi is allergic to his cat, Effi, how does he deal with his allergies? I'm glad that Javi loves his cat enough to manage the allergy inconvenience.

Will Hersh's next feature be solely about Nam or Hanyu? I'm betting a Hanyu feature is in the works to appear after Worlds (with the idea that Hanyu is bound to return to top of the podium). Will be great if Patrick Chan has conflicting plans. ;)

I hope Javi can end his career with Worlds in Spain!!!
I cannot even begin to contemplate his retiring, it seems that just yesterday he was that 17 year old from Spain that @Andrey aka Pushkin was mad about. Strange that he says he needs to improve performance. SS, yes, some, power especially; performance- he is pretty awesome, IMO.
Great family picture!
I was on vacation in Spain last summer and walking around saw a (free?) magazine everywhere with Javi on the front page (it was June). Was great to see him being appreciated in the mainstream media.

Yeah, that's cool. But I bet in Spain, in Japan, in Russia, et al countries, that it's not unusual to see figure skaters in the forefront of media outlets (print, broadcast, online) on a regular basis.

Even Canada writes about their skating stars more regularly in the mainstream media than we ever see in the United States. In the U.S. the coverage is usually limited to local hometown newspapers of various skaters, and wider coverage every four years in lead up to the Olympics, or in lead up to a big event such as Worlds or Nationals (with most of the coverage in the latter instance seen predominantly in the region where the event is being held, e.g., Boston Worlds).

Speaking of which, everyone in Boston seems happy:

Judging by USFigureskating tweets/pics and fan reports, it sounds like everything is off to a great start.

I love the last line of that article, @aftershocks. I couldn't make it to these Worlds, but Boston isn't that far from me if more events are held there in the future. It's wonderful to hear skating being talked about as an economic contributor again! I hope the US and Canadian skaters make North American crowds happy!
