Ilia Malinin Fan Thread!

Me and probably everyone else on the thread @ your posts
Even if there is a very valid point being made? I mean, sure, let's just pile on because Ilia is more privileged and therefore, somehow, less important than the people who's feelings he may or may not have hurt. Gah. I'll stop now before I go on a rant that is better left to PI.

I think his attitude and comments would turn off not just Fanyus but some other Japanese skating fans as well.
As far as I can tell from what I read in my Twitter Feed (in Japanese), most Japanese fans are like:
"He is young. He made mistakes. He apologized. Hope he will learn from this, truly understand what was wrong about what he did, and will not make the same mistakes again. Then move on."

Exactly. Japanese fans are on an average older, which I think is because Japan has a longer standing tradition of skating.

I think Japanese fans are also not as ideological as fans from other countries, which might be cultural, so it's not at all shocking that most don't actually care/are more forgiving.

People shouldn't pile upon him.

But people will online, and Ilia and the ones around him would be well aware of it by now. It's not the first time he's got attacked, he was already attacked for the 4A last year just as an example, and this recent thing (by which I mean homophobic comment) was going to ruffle many more feathers. He should very much try to protect himself, instead of saying whatever, whenever.

Coming to the actual point you're making, I do think it's a complex issue and I tend to agree with you entirely, but I also don't think Marry is doing it in a well-meaning manner, so... And no, I don't think the people who do this care one bit about anyone else's mental health, even though they'll make 50 different tweets about it when it concerns them or their favourites.

^^^ For those who can't see Instagram stories, Ilia's message today:

"Hello everyone, just wanted to update you guys after last week.
In an effort to learn from my mistakes and move forward, U.S. Figure Skating has encouraged me to take a sensitivity training to help me grow and better understand the LGBQT+ community and other underserved people.
I apologize to all those affected by my comment. I hope to learn and grow from this."

But a smart move from the USFS to clean up his "image". If he wasn't the leading man in the US men's skating, they wouldn't bother that much. It took them a whole week to make a plan and to "encourage" him. I can't remember, did Nathan Chen also had that "training"?

All top US athletes have PR training - and I hope you also have a bit of training so you think before making comments about how gay people are hurt because of their "ego".

@Marry there's no sense in feeding the troll, but speaking about culture that's different than your own and sensitivity towards it, here are two of your views:

Because you choose to feel that way. Every kind of joke is seen as offensive these days, and nobody is able to laugh at themselves anymore. But let's just keep feeling like victims and giving people even more of a reason to treat us like that....

You seem to be a bit obsessed over this "minorities" thing. Instead of being and acting like an equal part of the whole, you prefer to be seen as an outcast. If that's your message, how do you think others are gonna treat you? I'm not running around telling people i'm asexual and that i want special treatment because i'm "different", when in fact, i'm not different, i feel i'm like everybody else lol
You need to get over yourself and build some self confidence or you will always find a reason to be offended or feel excluded. You think you don't contribute to this problem? Everything is always other people's fault? No wonder nothing changes, you don't want things to change, you enjoy the attention way too much

So yes-- moron.

Good to hear. Glad he took the note and I’m sure he’ll do better.

I liked Ilia for who he is, he was true to himself, he was him, now it seems he is letting others form him into something THEY want him to be. His individuality obviously doesn't matter and i'm afraid i can't support this

Happy to see you leaving the fan thread then - ciao.

No his "individuality" doesn't matter when it comes to homophobia. It's too damaging to social relations.

Your idea of "individuality" has no space for education, which is what childhood is all about. Just as kids have to be taught not to resolve arguments by physically fighting or bullying, so some have to learn not to victimize LGBTQ+ people. And, yes, Ilia's comment starts down that path by utilizing generalizations about a certain group and ignoring all those who don't fit it e.g. Patrick Chan and his PCS.

Will there be a “Welcome Back Home” event or show at Ilia’s home rink (SkateQuest) in Reston, VA? DH and I will be back in DC for a couple of weeks & were wondering. Most of Ilia’s post-season shows seem to be professional &/or in Japan.

What is known to date:
His summer show schedule:
U.S. Stars on Ice, May 20-June 4 (8 shows)
Dreams on Ice in Japan, June 30-July 2 (4 shows)
The Ice tour in Japan, July 22-Aug. 4 (12 shows in 4 cities)
ETA: I don’t see an ice show scheduled at his home rink in Reston. He’ll be going to California to work with Shae-Lynn Bourne (and maybe Arutunian) when he’s not performing.

So nothing local, in the DC area…but tons of shows in Japan? Let’s see if a US SOI show is close to Wash, DC:
Baltimore on June 2…Awwww we’ll be back in Puerto Rico by then. 😢

Any word on what he might be skating to next season or who is working with him on programs?

While in COS he worked with Drew Meekins on a program (possibly for one of his upcoming show appeearances in Japan?).

His SOI solos are "All You Ever Wanted" by Rag'n'Bone Man and an exhibition version of his FS - I've posted a link to the latter in the 2023 U.S. SOI tour thread in GSD: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...international-cast.110357/page-3#post-6435859

As posted recently by @Wyliefan in the Club & Benefit Shows thread in GSD, Ilia has been added to the "Ice On Fire" show at the ION Arena in Leesburg, Virginia: https://www.instagram.com/p/CsdsRp7NEs3/

Ilia's SP music apparently was revealed on the 2nd day of "Dreams on Ice" in Japan:

Machine translation with edits:
... in the performance on the 2nd day of the ice show "Dreams on Ice 2023"... During the daytime performance, he performed a new short "Malaguena" choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne. Dressed in black with gold stripes, he performed to Latin music. In the practice before the performance, he was seen challenging the quadruple axel, but in the actual show he did the triple axel. Still, the venue is boiled with a very high jump. The following combination of quadruple Lutz + triple toe loop landed without difficulty. The final triple axel was also a great success, showing the high degree of perfection of the jump. At the end of the performance, when the melody changed to a violent tempo, he showed off a powerful step that matched it. After the performance, a big applause was sent from the audience.
I saw his music described as a "flamenco-genre" on Twitter - "Malaguena" by Ernesto Lecuona?

I have to admit that I'm disappointed in this music selection. Partly because I'm not interested in this music and style for Ilia. But, also partly because I tend to doubt that this is music that Ilia himself is that into. (I hope I'm wrong.) But, I'm sure that he and Shae Lynn can use this music to design a great program. And I'm glad that he has brought in Shae Lynn from the beginning of the program and season.

Just a reminder that Shae-Lynn choreographed Ilia's SP last year. He isn't bringing her in new this season, though he has said she will be choreographing both programs this year, which is a change.

Oh. I thought he didn't work with her until later in the season and wasn't the original choreographer. In any event, I'm glad he's working on her with his programs so early because I didn't get the sense (from his own complaints) that he was spending much time with choreographers earlier in the season last year. IMO, his short program definitely significantly improved later in the season after he went back to work with Shae Lynn.
