How are skaters training?

It would be nice if someone as a default develops a system in which we could have fair “virtual competitions” because even next season travel may continue to pose a hazard and large venue gatherings may still be prohibited in places...

Yes, sadly. I think they should be starting to think about alternatives behind-the-scenes and exploring possible options for virtual-type social-distancing competitions to at least keep things going until the v i r u s can be defeated or effective vaccine found.

Are there any locations with outdoor ice in some of the gorgeous settings we've seen in skating specials, where some social-distancing training might occur?

Personally, I know of several skaters who are using the time to really do a deep dive into music that might suit for the O season. And there's the ones who have access to artificial sheets using them for spins and lift practice. I think 2021 will have a lot of spin improvements.

The way the trends are going, although the decline in cases may begin to happen in April/May time frame I think you can pretty much wipe out the global sports calendar for the entire year. The more international your sport is, the more you will depend on global transit restoration, which I don't see really coming online in a widespread way until around the end of the year. Tennis would be a prime example of a sport that can kiss 2020 goodbye.

Domestically, I can see restrictions lifted such that a maximum number of people can be inside any venue at a time, say 30-50. Goes for restaurants, etc too. Probably August/September for this to happen, so I could imagine by late summer rinks are prioritizing top skaters getting back to full time training. Cancel the grand prix, run 1-2 domestic comps to prepare for nationals and hope that international skating reboots for Euros and 4CC with specific conditions in place for any country to be allowed to participate or host (e.g. widespread testing in place, isolation protocols, etc).

So I think the season will be salvageable although perhaps not the highest quality skating we have ever seen. I doubt anyone will care. The only thing getting in our way is a lack of success with current social distancing practices or a flare-up of the virus when the weather turns cooler and we go back to square 1.

Liza Tuktamysheva and Yuri Smekalov (Mariinsky theatre dancer and choreographer) start a project together

We decided to follow all the safety rules and not to leave our homes in order to create choreography for my new program, that you will probably see next season.
This will be the Instagram series, you can also become a part of the series and participate in our discussions and influence on the outcome of our work on the program.
What do you need to do to join us? It's simple: subscribe to my @liza_tuktik page and the union of MAD Company @madcompany_smekalove

Here is their schedule:
April 2 (Thursday), 19:00 - an open interview with me and Yuri.⠀
April 3 (Friday), 19:00 - live broadcast with composer Bhima Yunusov
@bhima_u, voting for the music.
April 4 (Saturday), 19:00 - stream of our rehearsal with Yuri, together we will learn a fragment of the new choreography.
April 6 (Monday), 19:00 - online PREMIERE of the program we will create together with you.

Another issue is countries allowing international travel. I expect a lot of countries will keep quarantine requirements in place for a long time - even after society has opened up again.

So that’s another question in the mix.

Yes, any international sport like tennis, skating etc will have a longer time to ramp up. Domestically, training will resume sooner than any event.

The other element to watch is public gatherings. My uneducated guess is that many countries will allow us to begin circulating again but places like gyms, bars, restaurants will have capacity limits, say 30-50 in the venue at a time. We may be well into next year before we can start packing thousands of people into a venue. Sports that are more domestic and don't depend as much in gate receipts (versus TV revenue) will come back faster.

I was surprised to see Medvedeva's instagram post today where she said that due to indefinite border restrictions, she left Canada for Japan in advance of a show she's doing there in June.

Is Japan having ice shows in June?
Snippet from the Instagram post I linked to "As you know, we will have “Prism on ice” (sailor moon show) this June in Japan..."
I'm predicting it will be cancelled, though. But it seems she's planning on spending the next few months there in preparation.

I agree. They should start thinking about how virtual competitions might be able to work, and doing some trial runs when possible. If we aren't going to have a true season, NBCSportsGold is going to need to come up with something for fans, or reduce the cost of the season subscription!
