Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Does anyone think the mens is more exciting because of how after each program each man goes all carnival Barker lol for lack of a better phrase to the audience where the women do not?
Not for me. They do it so frequently that it loses its impact. If you shout after most of your routines or ask for audience cheers after most of your routines, it doesn't get me excited. I loved seeing the way that Ilia and Isabeau responded at the end of their programs at Worlds because those reactions were special.

If Simone looks really happy after a routine, then I know it's because she did great, and I love seeing that. I don't need for her to shout for me to be excited. IMO, the standing ovation after her vault yesterday was even more special because she did not ask for it.

Also, one of the reasons I like watching the women is that they are simultaneously demanding a lot of themselves while also being supportive of teammates and friends. What happened to Kayla yesterday was horrible, but it was nice to see that Suni cared and nice to see Jordan then being there for Suni. I don't think the men are cutthroat and they do congratulate each other, but I don't get as strong a sense of camaraderie from them.

Three-time national champion Brody Malone has made his second Olympic team, joining trials winner Fred Richard. Asher Hong, Paul Juda and Stephen Nedoroscik round out the five-man team that will look to end a 16-year medal drought at the Olympics.

Interesting I definitely had Shane on the team and I thought they would still put young on the team.

I need to see Karen’s math… Because how did Asher and Paul end up on the team and not Shane? What computer system crunched these numbers?

Someone needs to approximate it for me

Lol

Not my math. It was explained upthread that they have two data sets they run - 1) average of 3 highest scores from Champs & Trials, 2) average of all 4 scores from Champs & Trials - if the data sets spit out the same exact team that produces the highest score then that's the team, no discretionary discussion. Per NBC that's exactly what happened.

Any updates on Shi and Kayla? I’m searching the inter-webs and I can’t find anything.
Sweetie, Shi's out for the rest of the meet and Kayla was out yesterday. How did you miss that during the NBC Men's broadcast that you just watched since they talked about it? Basically the team is Simone, Suni, Jordan, Jade & one of Leanne, Joscelyn, Hezly or Tiana.

Shi still competed bars, and had the highest score, I thought maybe she might be healthy enough to compete tomorrow at least beam and bars What was the injury was it confirmed and she’s out completely? There’s no news about it yet. I mean she competed bars after her injury.

It was confirmed on the NBC broadcast today that she is out for tomorrow and won't be able to petition for the team.

Omggggg I was searching the web but I couldn’t find anything about that. Did it specify the exact injury? So she cant Do bars and beam? No Shi at the Olympics? There are no peanut butter cups in the world to remedy this for me.

Listen, mister... You had to have known there would be some sacrifice to the gym gods for our Jade to make the team...

USA gymnastics needs to take a note from figure skating… no need for the trials, just have the nationals be the indicator for that. Too much opportunity for risks of injuries with all these competitions within the last six weeks. And once gymnastics starts allowing lyrics for the floor program. Oh my gosh, if they started busting out emo music…

Is anybody surprised that Young is not on the Olympic team? That’s crazy.

And I am not b*tching about Shane

OK I am unplugging the Peacock. Ive had enough for the day.

And why did all five of them have to run out onto the floor with those flowers, Id come out with a cigar. Lol

What? Who thought it was a good idea to sacrifice Shilese for Jade?! I think Nederoscik making the team may have been karmic revenge for that. (But I do hope you haven't just jinxed Jade; she hasn't made it yet.)

I don't even want to think about the sacrifices that were made for Skye, Khoi, and Yul.

I feel like enough women have been sacrificed this week alone. I'm praying for no more in the next 24 hours.

At this point, I'd probably use Jordan & Suni on all 4 events in the quals - and I think Jordan would beat her if she doesn't continue to make upgrades between now and Paris.
That probably makes sense. Let them battle it out for the second spot in the finals. The only risk with this is what will happen if Simone has a freak bad event and ends up being the third American AA in the qualification.

Why are you tempting the gym gods like this? Not to put to fine a point on how much of a disaster bad qualifying meeting it would have to be for this to happen but she's led by 2+ points over her nearest competitors each day of both Champs & Trials so far.

If I recall, Suni did beat Simone one day of the last Olympic trials, so it's not impossible. But, I don't want to tempt the gym gods, so I'll shut up now. (TBH, I don't have a strong belief in gods, but I respect the fact that other people do and say so, as long as they are not doing something bad based on their beliefs - such as sacrificing Shilese - or imposing their beliefs on me. ;) )
