Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Moldauer was simply :swoon: on parallel bars. Just gorgeous.

That was so much better on mute.

I like the banana pants: they're so bad, they're good. The flares on the pommel horse really flared. Even if most of the guys on pommel horse look .5" short of dismounting as a wether.

Nedoroscik wins because of the hair and glasses. The rest of the white bread guys' hair is boy band tragic.

I know I still have some core muscles, because they ache watching rings. Who even figured out that was humanly possible in the first place?

I can't believe how empty the arena is. I realize that MAG isn't the draw that WAG is but even the WAG yesterday was pretty empty. I hope it's fuller tomorrow though I'm guessing the real draw for folks this year are Trials.
Did you look at the tickets? The middle sec with the nicest views of Simone’s vaults were bought up by scalpers and costing over 200 dollars

Okay, doing some number crunching now.

Realistically - the following guys are in the mix - Bock, Hong, Juda, Malone, Moldauer, Nedoroscik (I haven't ruled him out yet because his PH average is so stinkin' higher than the next highest men), Richard, Whittenburg, Wiskus & Young.

Interestingly... Replacing Juda with Nedoroscik gives the Team .525 extra in the 3 up/3 count scenario that we have for the Final and the highest score using the average of the 2 scores from this weekend (other team members would be Malone, Moldauer, Richard & Young). Justice for @tony, I guess, lol.

Here are the team combinations that would score 259+

Team 1 - Malone, Moldauer, Nedoroscik, Richard, Young = 260.425
Team 2 - Juda, Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Young = 259.900
Team 3 - Malone, Nedoroscik, Richard, Whittenburg, Young = 259.720
Team 4 - Juda, Malone, Nedoroscik, Richard, Young = 259.645
Team 5 - Bock, Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Young = 259.575
Team 6 - Hong, Malone, Nedoroscik, Richard, Young = 259.475
Team 7 - Hong, Juda, Malone, Richard, Young = 259.350
Team 8 - Juda, Malone, Richard, Whittenburg, Young = 259.295
Team 9 - Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Wiskus, Young = 259.275
Team 10 - Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Whittenburg, Young = 259.200
Team 11 - Hong, Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Young = 259.125
Team 12 - Malone, Nedoroscik, Richard, Wiskus, Young = 259.075

Right now - alternates would be Juda, Whittenburg, and Hong.

I checked earlier today and there was no start list for women yet. Does anyone know when it's coming out?

Thanks for doing the score analysis above, @Karen-W !! I would be thrilled with any of these teams. Always gutted for the alternates, but that is the heartbreak of a 5 man team.

If it were me, I would take Paul J over Steven N, but that is just because injuries are so prevalent. I think if Paul can hit all 4 of his usable routines at trials he is in.

Yeah, after what happened to Simone in 2021 and Joscelyn last year at worlds, taking anyone who cannot put up a usable score at all on any other apparatus feels like too high of a risk to me. Even more so for the men who have 6 apparatuses. I would take Juda based on these numbers, but we'll see what Hong and Whittenburg can do at trials.

Kayla, Skye and Hezly (dark horse for top 4 AA) finish on beam.
Weird - so the start lists were up and now the pages for both junior and senior are empty - just the rotation tables but no names listed.

True story ... I know the lesser known Men's gymnasts more so than the "stars" because the lesser known Men's gymnasts actually have interesting social media content.

I was playing with the numbers throughout the telecast last night, too, and I knew going into the night that it definitely was Nedoroscik who brought the most to the table with, what I feel, are the four other likely members bar some major implosion.

The problem even with pointing out his big error last night is that he's still scoring massively ahead of the others on the event, enough to make that much of a difference in the points. Putting three of a team comprised otherwise of Malone, Moldauer, Richard, Young, and either Juda or Whittenburg and you run a major risk of one of them missing in a big way. Richard and Young were sub-13 on day 1, Whittenburg was right at 13. 15.4 for Stephen is just so massive, and even a 14.6 from yesterday is a whole lot of points earned.

IMO, there's just no other event where there's that much potential for disaster and such a distance between the top athlete and the rest of the field. But it still poses the question of whether the other four guys can split five events, plus two of them on pommel as well.

Floor - Simone, Shilese, Jade
Beam - Simone, Shilese, Suni
Vault - Simone, Shilese, Jade
Bars - Simone, Shilese, Jordan

Jade still has yet to present her upgrades, probably at the trials. bring back the Amenar

Until we see what happens today and at the Olympic trials, it's premature to say who should be on the team. But, that's true only if we're going by numbers and facts and logical strategies based on how the Olympic team event works.

I can't help having my own biases enter into it, especially for the women if I feel like the American team is likely to win based on any number of team selection combinations. (I think the men are harder but still have my faves and wishful thinking there.) Based on their gymnastics, I prefer Skye and Kayla and Suni to Jade and Jordan, though I do like Jordan's floor (but not her leo). So, I'm really rooting for Skye and Kayla and Suni to earn spots alongside Simone and Shilese.

So I guess the meet has already started because wcc posted Simone and Jordan's beam lol

NBC's broadcast just began with Simone's balance beam routine (ETA: slightly tape delayed).
