Evgenia Medvedeva Cheer thread

When the sports judges give us joke Olympic winners like Hughes, Bawool, Sotnikova, and Zagitova instead of great skaters like Kim, Kwan, Slutskaya, Kostner, it is little wonder the sport is almost dead in the U.S, in fact in the US it has its lowest ratings in history currently. I dont blame the friend for dropping the sport altogether. Ladies event imparticular has become an utter joke for the last 5-6 years minimum. Tonight just confirmed it in a HUGE way.

I wonder if it isn't because the judges feel like figure skating is under a magnifying glass during the Olympics. They know they have to go with the more technical skater, rather than performance...otherwise there will be some scandal. Just thinking out loud, but seems like a possibility.

Who is Bawool? I have never heard of this skater. :)

I had "accepted" that Zagitova was going to win, but after that free skate I really felt that Medvedeva had done something amazing and was going to pull of the win. Then the scores came. I'm so sad for her and for figure skating.

IMO the problem was Alina got ridiculously high PCS for her SP, and Zhenya didn't get high enough PCS in the LP.

Ever since Zhenya went on a 'break' due to her injury, judges have been acting like she didnt exist. Zagitova became their favorite and it didnt matter what the skaters actually did.

I am afraid that if both go to worlds, the judges will do the same thing again.

I like Alina's LP a lot even if it's sill nowhere as good as Evgenia's. I could accept a closer PCS score there but not in the SP! Evgenia's SP was far better and the PCS spread should have been bigger.

Combining tech and PCS Evgenia should have had the lead after the SP. Even if it was only a .03 Sasha Cohen Torino lead she should have been on top.

She handled defeat with grace and that's just as much the sign of a true champion as anything else. I'm sure that deep inside she knew that her winning silver was a big possibility. I do think that things might have been different had she not been injured, but we will never know. And it's not my intention to start any rumors or anything, but I really hope Evgenia is eating properly. She looked painfully thin for me today, more than ever.

Which Olympics did you think Kostner should win? Surely not this one?
Not Sochi either, right (even if Sotnikova is controversial, I don't think Kostner would go in her place)? Or Vancouver (seems like Yuna is pretty uncontroversial here)?

She has a small build, like Katia Gordeeva and many other skaters. If you are suggesting an eating disorder, i strongly disagree. She looks like a very mature and balanced person on and off the ice.

I thought the same of Lipniskaya but I hope you're right!

Unless you have a reliable source telling you that she has an eating disirder, it is better not to start gossips like this one. It is a very serious problem but i would not pin it on someone without having proof.

ETA- A cheer thread is the last place where you should be accusing her of a serious problem.

May be this has been discussed somewhere, but why did Eteri give Zhenya a program with a lower base value than Alina? It's not like Zhenya can't do the jumps in a back loaded program. She started with a disadvantage, and had to play catch up with the most unreliable tool called PCS. This is The most subjective thing in all of sports. Why couldn't Zhenya have a program with more backloading if the goal was to win? Zhenya could have done only the 3Lutz in the first part and everything else in the second half. She didn't have the 3L3R combination. I think Lutz is not her strongest jump, so she may not have put it in the second half. Eteri plays the numbers game very easily. Why not use it to help Both of her students?

You are right and my message was cheering for her 100%. I shouldnt have continued with this comment. I have NO REASON to think she might, no source whatsoever. Let's forget it!

I think it was a strategic mistake of Eteri, who didn't want to take risks with Zhenya, thinking that her PCS and reputation and absolutely clean quality programs will be enough for the win. Plus they tried to backload the program at the beginning of the season and didn't work out and then Zhenya got injured.
But the problem is that the tech upgrade should have been taking place last season not this season.

You may be right. Besides, the AK music is fast in the beginning and it wouldn't have suited a back loaded program, the way DQ did. Her earlier program was better in that regard, but she and many others - myself included- loved AK as an Olympic program. She looked very beautiful as Anna Karenina.

I have seen Eteri moving away from her successful students toward more talented and younger students. Like moving from Julia to Evgenia. I couldn't help wondering if she was moving from Evgenia to Alina?- particularly after Zhenya's injury? It seems nobody trusted her to come back after the injury. They all underestimated her. All her heroics went to waste :(

I hope Zhenya can concentrate on worlds and win in Milan. However, she is no longer the front runner. Zag will get the benefit of the doubt. Now even Osmond is in the mix. Zhenya's job of defending her world title got even tougher.

@Skittl1321, there were many people who actually did feel Kostner should have won in Sochi, even over Kim. Yes there were definitely more who thought Kim should have won, but there were still a good number who had Kostner as the winner. Atleast more than had Sotnikova as the rightful winner it seems. Now whether this is rational, or mostly based on Kostner's massive popularity and the sentimental value of her finally having a great Olympic performance is open for debate. Personally I definitely did not have her gold over Kim, and I am not sure if I even had her silver over Sotnikova or not. She did skate very well, but her spins were the weakest of like the top 10, and by far of the top 5 or 6, she had some shaky landings, and she didnt even do a triple-triple. Her LP PCS and short program both being lower than Sotnikova was asinine but I am not sure she had the TES in the LP to do any better, let alone win, regardless. It doesnt change that there were a decent number of people who argued Kostner possibly deserving to win there though, I think even Brian Orser said it although his relationship with Kim is probably still strained so there could have been some bias at play there.

No, I definitely don't think that Eteri moved away from Zhenya to Alina. I saw how emotional she was when they waited for the scores in the free and also the disappointment at Europeans.
It was just a strategic mistake to rely on PCS and reputation, plus injuries. I also hope that Zhenya wins the Worlds but it will be difficult if Alina is on... Do you think that she has time to upgrade the tech content?

Considering she started out the season with more jumps in the second half I highly doubt it was just resting on laurels. Med has always improved presentation wise every year. I suspect that it just wasn't as consistent in practice plus with the injury and they wanted to go with the routine she was more likely to hit.

If doing all the jumps in the back half was easy everyone would do it!

Exactly, she improved the presentation, but not the tech content and that's what the judges are looking for nowadays as huge TES triggers also big PCS.

She can do the jump combinations in her sleep. I think she can move the 3f3t to the second half, and move the solo flip to the front. It will get her 10 percent bonus on the 3t but that is miniscule. If she could somehow move the 3Lz to the second half, that may help her get additional points, but it is not her strong jump. That is why she doesn't do two lutzes in her LP.

However, skaters depend on muscle memory. Any big change to the program would be too risky. So i think swapping the flips may be her best option. It is too late for this season to upgrade her tech content. May be she will work on a quad salchow next season. I dont want her to work on 3R in place if 3t in her combination. It has a risk of a downgrade.

She may be better off with just a minor change for worlds, and hope that the judges would be kinder to her. Afterall shebprived herself again as a

I still can't get over her SP loss. How could the judges place the beautiful Chopin skate behind Alina's sloppy Swan Lake? The PCS difference should have been large, and in Zhenya's favor.

Did anyone watch the exhibitions? I didn't. Partly due to lack of interest, partly because NBC left the exhibitions to show Bobsled. NBCSN was showing Curling. What did Zhenya skate to? How did she look? Happy/sad/neutral?

She skated to Kukushka, the same song as at Europeans. It's a cover that was used in a war movie, so she had a lot of fight, I'd say she looked determined. She did a 3sal-3toe, but made a mistake on some other jump. A good performance all in all.

Going forward, what do you think Zhenya should do?

A. Add a quad salchow?

B. Add a 3Lz 3R combination in SP and LP?

C. Change coaches?

I don't feel that Eteri gave her her full support, or she wouldn't have promoted Zagitova as the greatest thing ever. ( I know many will disagree with this statement)

If she does change coaches, who could it be?

D. Change country?

(Sounds outrageous)

Her father is from Armenia, so she could skate for Armenia. This will ensure her entry into the 2022 Olympics (but she will lose the political power). Skating for Russia means she could be left off the team in 2022, in favor of 15-16 year olds.
