Apparently there were 70mph winds at the airport at the time of landing. Working theory is the crosswinds on landing caused one wing to touch the ground and then it broke off and the plane flipped.

ETA - correction, 40mph winds, but still dangerous.

Looking at the footage, it's a miracle that everyone seems to have survived. 🙏🏼
I did see this though .. I’m copying from twitter:

Emergency services, including Ornge air ambulance, are responding to reports of a plane crash at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

70c8fc80

Ornge told Global News Monday afternoon it has dispatched multiple ambulances to the scene.

“One paediatric patient is currently being transported to Sick Kids with critical injuries,” it said.

“One male patient in his 60s transported to St. Michael’s Hospital with critical injuries (and) one patient being transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with critical injuries.”

We just landed at Pearson yesterday, and it was very bumpy. Thanking heavens we were all ok.
I commented on X yesterday that I hoped all the skaters/coaches leaving for 4CCs (and Road to 26 Trophy, for that matter) from Toronto, Montreal & Detroit (as well as Boston) had safe flights because the weather looks absolutely nasty in those areas right now.

Regardless this has just happened so we’ll have to wait for more details once it’s known.

Back in 1989, my family and I were on American Airlines headed toward Las Vegas. It was in March and very windy. I had put on the headphones and discovered I had dialed in the frequency that the pilots were on.

Suddenly, we were in a thunderstorm and the plane had to stay where it was at because there was a Boeing up above us and a Delta was right below us. I looked around and noticed that people were beginning to get worried because the storm was getting really bad. The light also came on for us to keep our seatbelts on.

Finally, they were headed toward the airport when the plane stalled. I knew that because I still had the headphones on, and yelled, "Oh my gosh!" My dad knew I was listening to the pilots, and asked, "What's wrong?" I couldn't help it and said really loud "The plane has stalled!"

Then, everyone on the plane was screaming because we all felt it. The pilot managed to get the stalled engine running again (it was the engine on the right side of the jet). Then, I heard one of the pilots say that they didn't think they would be able to stop before we got to the end of the runway.

About that time, the heavy wind lifted the right wing, and it slammed back down on the runway. You could hear the brakes squalling, and people were screaming including me. The pilot managed to stop the plane at the very end of the runway, and you could see the paramedics and a fire truck, etc. driving down to the end of the runway because the very tip of the left wing was damaged because of the right wing being lifted by the wind and coming back down.

After we got off the plane, we all hugged the pilots and thanked them for landing that plane. Those two pilots were our heroes.

Would it be socially acceptable to clap if your plane lands without incident?

I haven't flown in years, but I remember it being done at least once - completely uneventful flight, but a nice show of appreciation for the pilots & crew.

That clip is from Pete Koukov who makes crazy skiing videos so his phone is probably melded into his hand.
Was it obviously a cell phone or did he have some sort of action camera that might have been in a chest harness? (Which is probably how he makes the skiing videos.)

At least there's no concern about US ATC in this one....

As others have said, clapping when the plane lands is customary in Latin America. I can always tell when a short-haul flight in Europe has connecting passengers from Latin America by the applause on landing. Some people are annoyed by it and think it's cheesy, but I think it's fun and will join in.

Every once in awhile, I'll see it done by non-Latin American groups in situations of bad turbulence, aborted landings, etc.

Even though I fly 2-3 round trips per month, I have to admit I was antsy and anxious on both legs of my first round-trip since the horrible crash in DC. And I flew again last week and had a brief moment of panic when I saw another plane well in the distance. The news does mess with one's head sometimes.

We are about to ticket 800+ people (staff and their families) for a corporate party next summer and I made sure to tell people multiple times we prefer them to ticket their lap infants. They should be strapped into their carseats upon landing. Can you imagine the strength required to hold on to a toddler in this sort of situation?

Depends on where you are from.

I’ve seen it and done it lots of times here in Atlantic Canada but it’s not done in Central Canada for sure (not sure about the West but thinking not.)

There was more than one cell phone being used by people. It would be the very last thing on my mind.
Many people would being turning their phone off airplane mode to text family, friends, business contacts, Uber. It's really easy to switch to camera and video.

And think - tik toc or reddit or you tube.
