British skating thread?!?! :scream:

Stand by for thread closure. :yikes:

:watch:

Uh oh! Really? I may not understand how this all works.

ETA: I just follow a few of the skaters and thought there might be other fans of other GB skaters out there. If I'm the only one, no worries...this will just sink to the bottom and disappear, yes?

Come on, @Jozet, have the courage of your convictions! Britain's day will come again. I like Danielle Harrison. What's up with her?

Lol! Well, I'm not a complete newbie here, but I'm not an old-timer. You never know when you're blindly/naively stepping into some decades-old brouhaha. ;)

OK...Danielle Harrison...I'll appoint myself to do some research.

Zoe Wilkinson / Christopher Boyadji's 2016 Cup of Nice SP (52.58, 3rd): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99lFpURMdOA
They placed 5th overall in Nice, won their first GBR pairs title (as the only Senior team), and have the minimums for Europeans (Zoe will be 37 by then! :kickass:).

Merry Christmas everyone! My Xmas wish this year is to compete at Europeans. I guess I have to wait and see if Santa can deliver this one. X

I am wondering where all the pairs have gone. At the beginning of the season it looked that there would be three seniors pairs, and now it looks that only one survived?

Hamish Gaman had some new partner, if I recall she was pairs beginner, but I haven't seen them competing at all. Any news what happen to that?

Amani Fancy have been on icepartnersearch for ages. How hard is it to ask Nina Mozer for a suitable Russian male partner? This strategy worked well for Australia, why doesn't Amani try it? Let's face it, Russians have far too many of them and they will never get out to Europeans/worlds unless they switch country. Russian federation have been recently pretty good with releasing what they don't need.

There were also some junior pairs (one or two) and if I recall correctly, the male partner was aging out of juniors. Where is he now?

I do have a lot of respect for Wilkinson/Boyadji, but bottom line is that because of her age I don't think they will last more than a few years. I would love there to be several pairs fighting to get better than their competitors, rather than knowing that they are the only pair and they will be British champions no matter what.

Why would a Russian guy want to start skating with a girl who barely has her 2A? And in a system that has zero funding and no chance to go to the Olympics because it's minimum 5 years residency, which also means they'd have to be training in GB and we have no competent pairs coaches.

On a more positive note, I liked Sasha Fear & Elliot Verberg who won the Junior Dance at Nationals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMwWxs8Lfqg and also a bronze at Santa Claus Cup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q19PV3P0hOY

Elliot is great, I loved his partnership with Gwen Sletten, but it looks like things are shaping up nicely with Sasha, especially considering they've only been skating together for a few months. Props to Sasha as well for keeping the same dress & programs from her JGP event this season and just upgrading the partner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUlNyVTZUrU ;)

Love to see and hear up and coming skaters for all countries. I watch for the ones I know about in their competitions..Thanks for taking the time.

To have a guaranteed ticket to Euros, Worlds, and senior internationals, perhaps? There are plenty of Russian skaters who aren't subsidized or heavily subsidized, and there are many male partners in Pairs and Dance worldwide who are supported by the woman's family.

For someone with no chance of making it to the Olympics, GB residency and citizenship isn't an issue.

A British skating thread?:watch:

The British skating scene seems pretty tame these days compared to the days of yore when every British thread devolved into accusations of libel, links to fabulous (but later removed) youtube videos showing how British judging was corrupt through detailed analysis of compulsory dances, and the mods having to lock the thread. :40beers:

I'm happy to have another British skating thrrad! :40beers:

I'm impressed with the level of the Brit girls--it definitely has gone up significantly this year! What do we know about the new national champ, Natasha McKay? I really have never heard of her before, and was surprised to see her win, especially considering how much Karly has improved and some of the solid showings Nina Povey has had this fall.

To get ticket to Europeans and worlds. If the average pair Russian guy stays in Russia, he will be lucky to do B competitions. You can ask the same thing - why would any Russian pairs girl wanted to skate for Australia, and yet it seems to have worked well for Katia Alexandrovskaya. JGPF in their first year... She would have never got a JGP event in Russia because she wasn't considered good enough.

ETA:kwanfan1818 already answerd the same.

Zoe Jones and Christopher Boyadji article after their debut at Europeans:

... the 37-year-old was pleasantly surprised with the reaction she and partner Boyadji got in Ostrava.
“It was amazing, we had so much love from the crowd and the skaters. I was going in there maybe 10 or 20 years older than the others,” said Jones.
“You don’t know how they are going to react to you but all of the skaters came up to me and said they admired me.
“I don’t think there is another mother out there doing this at this level, so it was amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever given so many autographs.”
...
“His shirt and my age were the big topics of conversation on that day of the competition.”

Ooh I missed this thread when it started, I had wished there was one the week of Euros but didn't dare start one!
I was so impressed with how well the GB team did at Euros. With the exception of the 2nd dance team everyone made the FP, and did pretty decent performances. I know we had no one in or close to the top 10 but I thought it was a fantastic start for all the skaters. I've been pretty out of touch for the last few years and I wasn't expecting those results at all. And Zoe... what a rockstar! :D

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson were interviewed by BBC Radio Scotland's John Beattie last month: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1135005639932037&id=239397349492875&refid=52

December 2016 article on ice dancing sisters Lilah and Sasha Fear: http://archive.camdennewjournal.com/ice-dance-world
Lilah, 17, and Sasha, 14, who both go to South Hampstead High School, and their respective dance partners Lewis Gibson and Elliot Verburg, were crowned British Ice Dance Champions at the British Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield.
But success doesn’t come easy, with the sisters embracing a 5am start so that they can train six days a week at the Alexandra Palace Ice Rink. They are, however, reaping the rewards.

Hmmm, they don't start at 5am but at 6am, because that's when Alexandra Palace gets open. But that's a small detail.
