When it comes to costumes is there anyone (besides me) who doesn't like a lot of rhinestones, jewels and beading look? I always think rhinestones cheapen some looks.

I love classics, solids, or patterns, with very eloquent lines and styles,... and Oh My Gosh, I love sleeves.

I also like color and I think color blocking is cool in figure skating dresses.

I love the look of Alexa Knierims Free dress last year.. all of Alissa Czisny's (minus any rhinestones), Kostner's (minus any rhinestones) ..... classic lines and dresses with no bling.

Mirai Nagasu was always a skater who went for the rhinestones on steroids look that i think isn't very elegant.

Anyone else agree? Maybe I am alone on this.

Here are my examples of what I prefer:

Czisny: https://rufflesglittersequinsiceska...51/alissa-czisny-us-nationals-2011-free-skate

On a side note I was always a fan of Long dresses as well. Peggy Flemming as a professional would wear long dresses and I think is SO ELEGANT in figure skating!!!

Holy Crap..this dress is so elegant...Peggy 1979 Lake Tahoe photo... and the pink one after that just called "Peggy Flemming"

I like both simple not very sparkly styles, and also looks with more bling. It just depends on the specific dress. I did also find some of Mirai's dresses to be "over-blinged". I often enjoy the longer skirts in ice dance.

I loved Alexa's free skate dress from last season, I loved Aljona's FS dress with more detail and a bit of sparkle, and I loved Aljona's short program dress which was all sparkle, just to focus on pairs.

Some of my favourites this season are:
- Sara Hurtado's RD dress, which is very sparkly (but I also really like her FD dress, which is sleek and simple)
- Marjorie Lajoie's RD and FD dresses, RD has minimal sparkle with lots of bright flowers details, FD has medium sparkle
- Evgenia Tarasova's SP dress, which is pretty flashy and shiny
- Anna Shcherbakova's SP dress, which has lots of detailing and beading
- Kaori Sakamoto's SP dress, which is pretty and floaty with basically no sparkle
- Evgenia Medvedeva's FS dress (nationals version), which has lots of subtle sparkle detailing

Evgenia M's tango dress is probably my absolute favourite, followed by Kaori's.

That’s ME / Maria Evstigneeva
She does costumes for most of St Petersburg skaters (Kolyada, Aliev, Konstantinova, Leonova, Stolbova/Klimov) and Carolina Kostner

Oooohhhh, I like her aesthetic.

Classic yet modern and unique.

And she doesnt have a heavy hand with rhinestones!!!!

I adore the red Carolina, black Kolyada, the elegant black long sleeve with shoulder feather detail (whose is that)..AND I especially LOVE the black and white deconstructed dress... (wow, whose is that?) https://www.instagram.com/p/BklDB4AD62b/

Kolyada is such a cutey I realize!

I also love her costumes. They are beautifully made, interesting, different from one another, and not heavy handed. She can do minimalist and she can do ornate. I get the feeling that she really gets to know the skater's body, skating program, likes/dislikes, etc.

I love Brad Griffies' work, but he clearly has a particular style/asthetic such that 90% of his costumes look like they are beautiful Brad Griffies creations.

Some of my all-time faves

Totmianina/Marinin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqA4_g6MwVI - graphic interest
Piper Gilles: so daring and glamourous https://olympic.ca/team-canada/paul-poirier/
Gabriella Papadakis, sheer beauty https://hellogiggles.com/news/gabriella-papadakis-wardrobe-malfunction-silver-medal/
Shen and Zhao: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qqHEd0Bq9o complimentary without being similar, just the right level of detail - blending the Italian and Chinese aesthetics
Klimova / Ponomarenko: a bit crazy but it totally works, her outfit is a part of the program in itself. Wouldn't have worked half so well in a traditional dress... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4LnD0laELk
Mao Asada: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Yu85UCI-KQ just gorgeous and striking against the ice
Shoma Uno: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6eWYNHP1fU who better to rock velvet pyjamas
Brian Joubert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcNbMEsMR84 watching the film leaves me disappointed no characters are wearing the right costume
Mae-Berenice Meite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFS-vUm_Cmo I normally dislike high necks and bling, but this couldn't work better

These outfits win every best dressed list ever. I liked the black version they wore at IdF a lot but this is a whole other level. Also I am a fan of their FD, it seems they made the top a bit longer to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions (https://goldenskate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Gabriella-Papadakis-and-Guillaume-Cizeron-.jpg)
Someone needs to give Guillaume a medal for not only being a great skater and choreographer but also an amazing designer

I agree with you. Some costumes have too many beads, sequins, etc., that detract from the program. The costume should fit the theme and mood of the piece. For example, if the skater is skating to a soft, lyrical piece of music (e.g., Claire de Lune), the costume should be light and flowing , not covered with layers of heavy beading.

I'm glade you mentioned my idol, Peggy Fleming. Her mother made all her competition costumes. They were beautifully tailored and still look timeless even 50 years later. When she turned pro Bob Mackie (who created costumes for Carol Burnett, Cher, Anne-Margret) began designing her performance costumes. Needless to say they were a lot glitzier. I also like the Vera Wang dresses Michelle Kwan wore and the Donna Karan dance dresses made for ice dancers Punsalan and Swallow in the late-90s.

New article published on May 29, 2019: https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/...watch-their-on-ice-costumes-come-to-life.aspx
Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc work with Denyse Frey, the seamstress and designer who has brought Cain's costumes to life throughout her skating career.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates collaborate with Mathieu Caron, the designer who has continuously worked side-by-side with Chock's sketches and ideas over several seasons.
And Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue have Hubbell's mother, Susan Hubbell, who took her eye and skill of fashion from a young age into her daughter's successful skating career.

I forgot to reply to this months ago! I can't believe it since I think it's an interesting topic

Brad Griffies started designing skating dresses for friends as a hobby that very much accidentally turned into a business. He innovated/popularized many modern trends in skating dresses that have since become commonplace among a lot of dress makers including dyed/colored mesh originally seen on Gracie Gold at the Sochi Olympics FS and this neckline that's now found available from many skating and dance/gymnastics costume makers (along with other necklines). Perhaps the Gracie dress was most influential as we saw many popular skaters wearing copycat or similar dresses with the false strapless neckline and dyed mesh with long sleeves - including Evgenia Medvedeva. You could even argue Tessa Virtue's Moulin Rouge dress was a more sophisticated variation of this. Bradie Tennell and dozens of other domestic ladies skaters wore similar dresses the year after Gracie's Sochi dress debuted.

What I think sets his work/style apart from any other dressmaker these days is his ability to rhinestone a dress. Of course his use of interesting fabrics and men's line costumes for off the rack sales are great, but I'm talking about elite costumes. There are SO many great dressmakers like Lisa McKinnon, Tania Bass, Satomi Ito, Olga Ryabenko, Ladu Design, etc. etc. who simply use rhinestones to augment a good existing design. Which is fine, and Griffies does that as well when appropriate. But I'm really impressed with Brad Griffes' ability to turn a boring or otherwise cliche base dress into something special and unique using rhinestones. I'm talking about how he turned the plain white here into a well designed belt, the rainbow/belt pattern here, the way the rhinestones on this dress hint at the music choice, this frankly STELLAR neckline (apparently vetoed by USFS), this whole dress (and a similar one), the gentle flow of the rhinestones on this dress, the intensity of the rhinestones on this dress, and of course Mae's fierce jumpsuit.
