I loved this program too, and esp., the freedom of expression, effortless speed and joy of movement that he executed all with a smile that reached up even past the cheap seats and lit up cyber space! There is a new maturity, a leaner, meaner body and his springy bounce is back cuz he no longer seems to be carrying the weight and expectations of others, only his own count now showing how happy he is skating to his own drummer. Perhaps one of the BEST exhibition routines he has ever done and one that actually shows fans his engaging personality, as well as who he is - a true master of the blade! Great job Patrick, thanks for all your hard work to look like your simply floating effortlessly across the ice and to whoever did the choreography much applause!

LOL. I know a lot of people want him to have a coach proper. I am not opposed to that either. I just don't like this turmoil for him :( Hopefully he goes back to a technical coach.

I don't like the term technical coach. I wish to see him with a coach who has experience with a student with Patrick's personally. I wish John Nicks were still coaching. I'm no expert but I could see him efficiently giving Patrick what he needs and making sure the day to day stuff gets done. Not that Frank has an opening but he may be too heavy handed for Patrick.

Patrick should have been thinking about a backup plan all along. I wonder what he will do. Too bad Orser is booked. I truly hope Patrick picks a coach who he will be comfortable with having a lot of input on his career. From the outside looking in Patrick had a bit too much control with a coach who was more than happy to be bossed around.

It will be very interesting indeed to see what he does now. In my humble opinion, he needs a coach that can constantly monitor his 3A. i.e. a tech coach. And to help him with another quad. Would love to see him with Orser :)

Amy Rosewater was the original source this morning on Twitter: https://twitter.com/amyrosewater
JUST IN: Kathy Johnson: "I have made the heartfelt and difficult decision to resign as Patrick Chan's coach." More later @icenetwork
"I am proud of the success we have had over the last four years and wish him all the best."
She notified @SkateCanada of decision about @Pchiddy on August 15

What about Artunian? Or if he's willing to go back home - Lee Barkell!
I like Arturian but I think his edict is if you want to be the best you can be this is what you need to do..and if they do not come through there are other people wanting to so why would he waste his time...Prob. would come accross the same with Orser...Really do not know much about Lee as a singles coach....I do think maybe he could ask Kurt to be a specialist for him and maybe spend a week a month with him...now that Kurt is not doing much in the way of shows he will have the time..He is such a good mecanic . He still will need someone to hold his skateguards at competitions though.

Speaking of Toronto, I just realized Chan is still representing the Granite Club. Shae Lynn Bourne is working there, and Liz Manley recently became the Head Skating Professional of the club. There might be a small possibility that Chan would return to Granite.

Patrick Chan will skate to the Beatles' 'Blackbird' for his 2016-17 SP (last year's EX)

Excellent choice I think
I like it, too. :)

This is the longer version of the Canadian Press article by Melissa Couto (ETA new link to same article with a video included): https://www.thestar.com/sports/skat...r-patrick-chan-comfortable-without-coach.html

Excerpts:
The two had planned to relocate to Vancouver this summer but plans fell through and Chan ended up in Canton, Mich., instead, working with Johnson at the same rink as renowned ice dancing coach and choreographer Marina Zueva.
plans fell through and Chan ended up in Canton, Mich., instead, working with Johnson at the same rink as renowned ice dancing coach and choreographer Marina Zueva.
"With this current situation with Kathy I think (moving to Vancouver) is on the back-burner altogether," Chan said. "Right now I just really need to be in one place and have my mind in singular focus. I can't be thinking about Vancouver and my coaching situation."
The 25-year-old Chan said there are "ongoing discussions" with Skate Canada's high performance director Mike Slipchuk about who his next coach will be.
He didn't bring a coach to the Mississauga camp because he wasn't "100 per cent sure on anybody."
"Right now the priority is to get these programs out and see what people think of them," Chan said.
The reigning Olympic silver medallist spent his off-season working on his triple Axel, primarily with Johnson but also with Oleg Epstein, a former coach of American skater Gracie Gold, in Canton.
Chan said he benefited from Epstein's quick, informal pointers in between coaching his own ice dancing clients.
"He would give his two cents, 'my shoulders were high, my step on my Axel wasn't as forward as it could have been,'" Chan said. "Off of those pointers my Axel went up another level of consistency and confidence."
He will start his season at Finlandia Trophy, Oct. 6-9, where he's "hoping to do quad sow" ;) (this writer must not be a figure skating person).

Thanks for that link Sylvia, I hadn't seen that video before. I'm glad to hear that he's "not completely freaking out" LOL. I hope he and Mike Slipchuk can agree on a coach soon. As much as he thinks he can do it alone, I think he would benefit from someone, if for no other reason than to bounce ideas off of, and help keep things organized at competitions.

Yes, agree completely with you. A high performance athlete needs a coach for myriad reasons. Not just to help technically. Patrick needs someone to help calm and ground him, especially at competitions. I pray this is just temporary. I HATE to say it, truly I do, but who would want to coach him? Finding a coach willing to not be in driver's seat and willing to let Patrick dictate the plan is going to be a challenge. That is just not generally how coaches work. Plus, sometimes Patrick does not take responsibility for a poor skate (i.e. blames the ice or skycams or whatever). This is rarely acceptable and most coaches will not put up with that. In Sochi, he did not skate well, but he OWNED it and I respect that. But maybe Slipchuk can work some magic. Fingers crossed but right now, I am nervous. This is my favourite skater of ALL time and that's a long time. All of these comments with love and respect for my favourite skater.

Nice post, kittysk8s. :respec:I disagree with you on just one point. I for one am pretty sure there's quite a few top coaches who would love to work with Patrick regardless of his imperfections.

Is Finlandia trophy being hosted in the same arena/site as Worlds? If so - a great test event opportunity, for skaters and hosts alike. I think it's part of why Boston Worlds was so successful - their having hosted a major event (2014 US Nationals). Get the 'kinks' out.

Ya, and Patrick actually mentioned that in one of the scrums....he alluded that is was a strategic decision.
